I am approximately 5 weeks along now, and didn't know until this morning. I haven't been eating very well, haven't been getting much calcium, and haven't taken any prenatal vitamins until today. Is this going to harm my babies growth in it's first 5 weeks? I will be eatiing well and taking all calcium and vitamins from this day forward ... I also don't smoke or drink alcohol, so this isn't a problem for me ... I just want to make sure I am going to have the best chance of a healthy pregnancy for my baby.

Hi SpectingMom. Don't worry! Just start trying to eat healthy from now on. But don't obsess about how you are eating. I drove myself crazy feeling like I was eating bad and I still do!! (I'm 30 weeks pregnant now). Assuming you live in the US, you are in a well-nourished country. Personally, I'm happy with myself if I eat some fruits and vegitables every day, I'm pretty sure I get enough calcium, and I take my prenatal. One thing to try to eat a lot of is protein as it will help with the growth of the baby (foods like meat, fish, and beans are high in protein). You are finding out you are pregnant even earlier than a lot of women, so your baby will be just fine! :)

By the way, congratulations on your pregnancy! I should tell you that there are some foods you will want to stay away from while pregnant, and certain kinds of fish is one of them...I wanted to tell you that after I told you to eat fish:) When you call your doctor, I'm sure your nurse will give you a list of all the dos and don'ts. BUT if once you find out you've eaten something you shouldn't have while pregnant, again, DON'T WORRY!! Before I knew I was pregnant, I ate all the wrong cheeses, undercooked meat, smoked salmon, etc!! lol. Just remember that when our moms had us, they didn't have NEARLY the amount of restrictions and we all turned out fabulous.:)
