Chronic Coughing

My second pregnancy I coughed almost every day from the day I found out I was pregnant. My OB referred me to a pulmonary specialist, but nothing seemed to help. Later I read some info on acid reflux that sounded very interesting. My third pregnancy I only had a little cough at the end, but I was very aggressive about taking Rolaids/Tums and Zantac to prevent acid reflux. And, like many of you, I had incontinence. I just found out I am pregnant again, and here goes the cough again. I'm making an appointment to see my doctor Monday morning. Since I didn't respond to asthma therapy, I'm hoping to try a new route. PLEASE, if you have a problem, make sure your doctor(s) look at the problem more than one way so you don't have to suffer until after delivery (about 7 weeks after for me.) |

I got a cronic cough when I delivered my daughter 18 months ago. At first the doctor said it was from being on the dry oxygen, after two weeks of cronic coughing I went to another doctor who put me on antibiotics for strept. Turns out I didn't have strept and I was still coughing and choking for another 4 weeks. I finally went to a Ear-Nose-Throat Dr. He said that sometimes pregnancy, or delivery of the baby triggers a weird sinus response. I was sent home with a sinus flush kit. I used it twice a day for about a week and I was completely fine after that. |

I wrote the original question and am happy to announce that a little over a year after my baby's birth I'm finally over that stupid chronic cough. No doctor was ever able to tell me why I had it or cure it. Only time took care of it. I still think you should check with your doctor but don't panic if he/she can't help you. In fact, panic seems to make it worse. |

I don't have an answer, but I can relate to many of you in this discussion, and I was hoping that someone might have more insight since it's been 2 yrs since the last entry. I'm 33, 6 weeks pregnant with my first and I've had a dry cough, mostly in the evenings, for the last 3 weeks. My doctor gave me the Z-Pack (Zithromax antibiotic) 3 days ago, which I'd hope would get rid of this, but now I am wondering if it will. This appears to be related to asthma and my inhalers do help some, but I'd like to not use them. Maybe someone has more insight after 2 years? |

I'm almost 20weeks pregnant and been suffering with a cough for the last couple of months but it has got worse over the last 2 weeks along with flu like symptoms(runny nose etc)! All the coughing is now causing a pain in my stomache area so i'm going to see my PCP today as advised by my OB/GYN. I'l let you know what they say! |

I'm 15 weeks pregnant with twins and have been coughing day and night since the 3rd week. I have spoken to my doctor about this many times, because it gets to the stage of coughing so much, I am throwing up constantly. |

Nic/Aussie Nic thanks for your offer of relaying what your specialist has to say. |

hi! I have the same problem with all the people here. I'm 21 weeks pregnant with Twins. I've been coughing since my 12 weeks of pregnancy. The doctors gave me "Prospan" an herbal cough syrup, and saline drops for the colds. My colds and cough is gone after 2 weeks of taking the syrup but my greenish Pleghm never leaves me. after a week of relief I have this sore throat and the doctor advice me to continue the syrup again and after 2 days of taking it I have this terrible cough back. I'm tired of this cough, because it usually attacks at night time and I cant have a proper sleep, I'm still working but during these times I dont have a choice but to take leaves or absences just to take a sleep in the morning. I hope that someone can help us get rid of all this colds and cough problem. |

Thank GOD I found this thread! I was feeling insane! I'm three months pregnant and I've had, colds, respiratory, and sinus infections since a week before I even knew I was pregnant, all with a persistent hacking cough. Nobody ever shuts up about how much I cough (as if I don’t know). I cough until I throw up, I cough if I lay down, if I sit up, if I move too quickly, if the air changes temperature, or if a breeze comes my way. I've been on antibiotics with no change, and am taking way more meds than I would like (even though they were recommended by my Dr.) Yesterday a coworker wrote me an email to meet her in the conference room where she told me that she and my other coworkers were "concerned" (i.e. annoyed) that I coughed so much. I thanked her for her concern and assured her that I had, in fact, seen a Dr. We have another appointment on Monday and I'll mention it again, but I'm glad to know I'm not the only one putting up with this crud. |

Man I am so glad I'm not the only one coughing around here! I have been coughing for almost a week now, worse at night when I lay down. A doctor I work with put me on a Z-pak so I was hoping it would go away, but the way everyone is talking around here, I'm afraid I might be part of the Coughing Club! |

towards the end of the 1st trimester i started with the most annoying dry unproductive cough ever. now at 26weeks it just gets worse. my doctor said its pregnancy rhinitis which is common in pregnancy since your hormones and stuff dry you out. now that its fall and allergy season it has gotten worse but i use saline nose spray and sleep ith a humidifier. its not working really well but figured it may even just a little. |
