yes..take Materna

KLB - January 14th, 2006 10:55 AM

Where can I get that

actually - January 14th, 2006 3:12 PM

you can take any prenatal that doesn't make you sick. You can get them at any drug store or walmart or target type store. Congrats!

Any prenatal will do, but make sure it has folic acid in it. If it has a very low amount (like 400mcg) then you might want to take a folic acid supplement as well. Folic acid is very important in the first trimester because it protects agains neural tube defects such as spina bifida.

When i went to the doctor they toldmeto take flintstone vitamins for now and ast 2 months start prenantal.

Alexandra - January 17th, 2006 1:48 PM

Sheena, that's very strange advice from your doctor. You really should be taking a prenatal vitamin right away - in fact, most doctors will advise that you start taking a prenatal vitamin before you try to conceive. Some of the things your body requires to help your baby grow need to be present in your body even before you are pregant (this is especially true for folic acid). Folic acid helps to prevent abnormalities in the spinal cord and nerual tube..and these start developing before your second month of pregnancy!!! Prenatal vitamins will have the right amounts of the key vitamins and minerals that are essential for a baby's growth. The same cannot be said for Flintstones, which is just a general daily vitamin that also happens to contain a lot of extra sugar.

One hint when taking the prenatal vitamin - try to take it with your biggest meal of the day - otherwise they have a tendency to make you feel nauseous.

FYI - January 17th, 2006 2:08 PM

That's not strange advice. A lot of women get pregnant who are not trying to conceive, so they have not been taking prenatals prior to conveiving. The reason that doctors tell some women to take two Flinstone vitamins is due to the high possibility that the women is going to get sick from taking the prenatals. You also can just take a normal vitamin, aka the Flinstone vitamin, and take a pill daily of folic acid. Also, there are many many women who do not take prenatals throughout their entire pregnancies and have perfeclty fine babies.

divinelibra - January 21st, 2006 10:50 PM

i called the docs office the other day and asked them about taking prenatal vitamins, the nurse told me NO, do not take anything until you've seen the doc. well, that was last week and they still dont have the time to see me. i thought that was strange....you'd think vitamins would do more good than harm right?

I just started taking prenatal vitamin with DHA supplement (2 separate pills). I am already starting to feel a little nauseous from vitamin and don't want to take the DHA yet. If I switch to a chewable prenatal do I still need to take the DHA supplement? I'm not pregnant yet, but trying. Also I am on my first month of being off of the Pill after taking it for 16 years.

ashad ~ there are so many different varieties of prenatals, you should get samples from your ob/gyn and see which kind doesn't make you sick. Also, some contain stool softeners which is helpful when you are pregnant, but sometimes not so good when you're trying. I personally take the over the counter one a day prenatals with a folic acid supplement because my insurance didn't cover most prenatals. The one a days do come with a dha supplement, which is good to take too. It only really makes me nauseous if I don't eat a good meal first. I'm also 12 wks pregnant, but started prenatals while trying.
