I am thrilled to be 6w/2d pregnant, after suffering a m/c in March. A nervous wreck this time, especially after some serious abdominal cramps a few days ago. I would love the reassurance of an ultrasound, but the doctor I'm considering going to said they don't do any ultrasounds until THE 22ND WEEK. That sounds ridiculous! Oh, and I'm 42 and this will be my first child (God willing.) Will you ladies please respond with when you received your first ultrasound test and how many can be typically expected through the pregnancy? Many thanks.

I thought they can do an u/s in the 7-8 week. 22nd week is crazy. But I don't know for sure. My first dr. appt. is July 20th and I will be 7 weeks. I am hoping they do an u/s.

I think it depends on where you live in the world or what kind of office you visit Let me explain....All 3 of my sister in laws and 3 of my friends had ultrasound very early...we're talking before 10 weeks and then they have another about 18-20 weeks. I was SO jealous! I am on my 5th pregnancy (first 2 miscarriage, next one delivered 2 months early, last one 2 weeks late and now am 10 weeks pegnant). I have had an ultrasound, but that is because at 6 weeks I couldn't get into any pants...they were checking for twins. Other wise this Dr. wouldn't do one until 18-20 weeks. I have had 3 different dr's in my pregnancy history BUT my sister in laws all had OBGYN's who had ultrasound machines in their office and they lived in the same part of the state and their Dr. did it not a sonographer! I was always at OBGYN's who sent us to the hospital or a radiology clinic for one and my OB was not the one preforming the ultrasound, So, seems to me that 22 weeks is a little late, especially if you want to know the sex of the baby. My first appt with my Dr. is next week. They didn't even want to see me until after 9 weeks! I was shocked at that! Miscarriages carry a lot of emotional baggage and excessive worry. It is hard to be excited for a baby when there is the fear of miscarring again. Itstinks, I know! Maybe when you go in for your prenatal lab appointment, you can have a heart to heart...if that doesn't work..switch dr's. I have done that. You have to be happy and confident with your choice. Plus, you are 42! That is a little on the high risk side anyway... go with your gut. I hope all works out and you get blessed with a healthy baby. oh and I never had more than one ultrasound except with my preterm delievery which was complicated and they did some to check status, fluid levels and health of the baby but my sister in laws got 2!

Thanks Carrie and Emily for your kind posts. Yes, I now think this particular doc is nuts, after reading your responses and interviewing another doctor's office staff. Best of luck to you both and thanks for answering. :-)

Laurie, I am now 10 weeks and my doctor normally doesnt do an u/s till 20 weeks. On my 8 week apt I was telling the doctor how I am having light cramping and light spotting and she sent me
for an u/s right away. We heard the heartbeat and saw the baby. It made me feel sooooo much better. I would see what they could do for you. I hate to say lie but 22 weeks is way too long!!! Good luck

lashunda - July 7th, 2005 4:11 PM

hey laurie, did u try findiing another doctor? i heard it depends on the doc on when they would see us. good luck!

Michelle - July 7th, 2005 4:56 PM

I had a sonogram done at 9 weeks and saw the baby. But on my last pregnancy I had a u/s done at 17 weeks. Normal is between 18-22 weeks

My first appointment with an OBGYN is going to be when im 12weeks. Are they going to do an ultrasound? I know it depends on the doc but what's your best guess? If they dont, can i request one?

Tiffany - July 8th, 2005 5:35 PM

Laurie, I had a m/c in early April and found my doctor's office wasn't very helpful. A friend recommended a doctor who takes anyone but specializes in high-risk pregnancies. I was seen at 4 weeks and had an ultrasound at 7 weeks. At 11 weeks I will hear the heartbeat on doppler and then go back at 12 weeks. You might want to find a new doctor. Also, see if your insurance covers an first trimester ultrasound. If so, you may be able to insist on getting one.

I had one today and I am 13 wks tomorrow. Find another doc.

I go to my first appointment next week and I will be 8 weeks along. My doctor will do an ultra sound then, and with my last pregnancy she did them every couple of months. Personally I would call around to different doctors, but that's just me. Good luck

Tamara - July 13th, 2005 8:21 PM

Laurie...my dr told me he normally has first u/s done at 18-20 weeks but I asked if we could do one early and he said if I'd like yes...so I am having one done at 8.5 weeks. Just ask nicely!
Goodluck...if not maybe try to find a better more understanding dr.
Take care.

Sharla - July 18th, 2005 3:45 PM

I had my first one done at 6 weeks, the doctor wanted to know how far along I really was, I am having another one done tommorow at 18 weeks.....Hope to find out the gender of my baby! I would find a different doctor, with already having a previous m/c and considering your age, you should have one done within your first trimester......Good luck!

Gemmie - July 18th, 2005 3:58 PM

According to a nurse I am 9 weeks. I don't get to see a doctor until my third appointment. I only can see nurse practioners. The nurse said I get my first ultrasound at 16 weeks.

erinsoul - July 18th, 2005 4:43 PM

I'm 10 weeks now and had my first u/s last week. Most docs will do one early to date the pregnancy accurately and look for early signs of distress, but it also can depend on your insurance co. Some insur. co. will only pay for one u/s, so in that case they are usually done much later in the pregnancy. If your insur.co allows for 2 or more u/s, I don't understand why the doctor would want ot wait so long.

shelly - July 19th, 2005 10:14 PM

I had one at 5 weeks, and am getting another one at 10 weeks. It's my first baby, my doc says thats his way of making sure everything is going along good

Anne - July 25th, 2005 9:36 AM

I had some pains in the stomach at about 4 weeks and my My Dr asked for an ultra sound, he said i should another at 10 weeks, its my first pregnancy, i dont know if it will be ok for the baby but the if there were any dangers i dont think the doctor would risk to let me do the u/s
