My question is that I have read and also heard doctors say when one is at a certain stage in pregnancy sex is not recommended. But why is it that doctors are more that willing to do pap smears using a speculum that is the same size of a penis? I see no logic in that approach. They should come up with something better to test us and not run the risk of harming our babies.

amy - my doctor told me that sex was absolutely fine all the way until the last few weeks. I think the concern there is the penis pushing against the cervix. a speculum doesn't do that.

isn't the speculum almost as long as a penis?

I remember having sex until I was 39 weeks. My doctor always told me as long as it's not painfull or uncomfortable everything should be fine. I stopped at 39 weeks because I was 1cm dialated and you can get and infection. But my doctor recommends sex. I'm now 12 weeks pregnant and having sex.

Ok so I am 12 weeks also and this is my second and SEX is fine its actually better this time around with the first one we were so worried and now its a bit more lax, not so much stress on us because we aren't worried as much about the whole thing
so Amy as long as your dr hasn't taken you off sex completely you should be fine and If you are still worried then call your doctor

But still why do they worry so much about a penis going into the vagina and not worry about speculums that are almost as long?

Amy, A speculum only attaches to the side of you vagina. A penis is actually penetrating and even sometimes going all the way up and hitting your cervix. When you get pregnant your cervix is sometimes sensitive. So if you have sex alot and you have a sensitive cervix. You have a 10% of having a miscarriage. If you are not spotting in any way. Don't worry. Enjoy your sex life.

but doesn't the speculum penetrate the vagina about 6 or 7 inches deep?

No, It only goes in and it stretches to the sides. When you go to your next doctors appointment ask the doctor to let you see one. You will see the big difference for a speculum and a penis.

Amy, I believe you only get a pap smear once or twice when your pregnant. I'm going to be 13 weeks pregnant tomorrow and haven't had one during my pregnancy. The only way you will get one is if you are having problems.

I have seen a speculum before and not only do they stretch out the walls they also go in deep to the point of discomfort. Last year when I had my regular check ups the doctor put the speculum in and it was very uncomfortable. I actually felt pain because it was so deep
