They say it is not safe to dye ALL of your hair because the chemicals are soaked into your scalp which can be passed on to the baby although I know tons of woman who highlight or lowligh their hair while pregnant-including me. I had my hair highlighted every 8 weeks while pregnant with my first son and have an appt on Sat. to get mine done (I'm 9 weeks w/ my 2nd child) It all depends on how comfortable you feel with it. Hi, I am a hairstylist and it is completely healthy to color or highlight your hair. The smells might make you sick, and we can not guarentee the outcome of the process because of your hormones. It could turn out greeen or something. (not likely just a possibility)

My OB gave me a list of don'ts for the first trimester and hair dying was one of the dont's. I would lean to the side of caution when dealing with any chemical exposure, especially in the first trimester when organ development and other processes are begining to take place.
