Hi, I'm wondering here if anyone has a lot of knowledge on vitamins, etc. I started taking some prenatals (outrageously expensive I think) that I bought at a health food store the day I got my bfp. Before that I had been taking antioxidants separately on a daiily basis (like Bs, C, Selenium, E, Beta Carotene, etc.) I also take the Omegas in addition to the prenatals now. I haven't been told that my progesterone level is of concern, but then again, I don't know if they tested for it when they did my betas. I worry about it nonetheless. I read that the B vitamins, especially B6 (and maybe B12) help with progesterone levels so I looked on my prenatals and compared to the B6 and B12 that I had been taking individually there was hardly any in the prenatals, so I started taking the B6 and B12 in addition to othe prenatals. Has anyone heard anything about this? Just wondering if it would be bad or if it would even be beneficial. As it is the prenatals make me queasy right now. I will ask my dr., but don't see her for like another week and a half. Thanks!

if your prenatals are making you sick you can take a childrens multivitamin instead as for the omega 3"S are they from flaxseed or fish oil because doctors say flaxseed oil should not be taken by pregnant women. Meanwhile, fish oil has been found in some studies to greatly support pregnancy and healthy baby development, and may even help prevent miscarriage. This is very, very important. If you want all the benefits of omega-3 fish oil without the worries get the Purest Fish Oil available

the reason is that flax seed, like soy or even more so, seems to have an effect on estrogen and hormones and might interfere with your body during pregnancy. Ask your doctor.

Tanya, thanks so much! I'm just going to not take the extra B6 and B12 because I don't know what the effects are and there is some in the prenatals. It should be enough I'm sure? As for the omegas, I'm glad you told me about those. I was recommended to take the Omega complex (not by my dr.) and it has 3,6 &9 in it. When I looked on the label just now it says there is Omega 3 Fish Oil, Flax Oil and Borage Oil (each of these 3 have a few other things listed under them like Linoleic Acid, etc.) So, I should NOT take this and just take an Omega 3 supplement??? I hope I haven't done any harm so far in taking the complex that has the flax in it...I had no idea :-(

stefkay - December 7th, 2006 11:24 AM

ps. I was taking 2 softgels a day(since right before ovulation this past month) of the Omegas and in each there is 400mg of Fish Oil, 400mg of Flax seed Oil and 400 mg of Borage Oil...

javidsgirl - December 7th, 2006 11:35 AM

just as long as the omega 3 only contains fish oil and make sure it is not fish liver oil because that is a no no you just want all natural fish oil

javidsgirl - December 7th, 2006 11:36 AM

well stop the flaxseed plz hunny

stefkay - December 7th, 2006 11:49 AM

Yep, I tossed out the ones I was taking. I just really hope what I have taken so far hasn't done any harm!!! Someone who is pregnant suggested the complex so I figured it was ok? Here I go all freaking out again...lol

javidsgirl - December 7th, 2006 11:51 AM

it is ok i didn"t know about that until i showed my doc the ones i was taking they had flax in them to and told me to trash them and gave alot of info about them and why you shouldn"t take then

suze42 - December 7th, 2006 12:26 PM

Does your doctor have samples??
My doc gives me enuf samples to last my entired pregnancy.
I wouldnt take ANY thing w/out consulting my doc. And Walmart has OTC prenatals that are like 10.00 for amonths supply...Thats not too much to spend I dont think.

javidsgirl - December 7th, 2006 12:33 PM

i absolutely agree suze i also think you take the time to the research and discuss that with your doctor my gp always encourages to do the research so we can fully dicuss the pro and cons

tanya, I went out and just spent wayyy too long going to several stores to find all natural fish oil (only) and had a hard time finding anything. I finally ended up going back to walmart after trying a couple of other places including a health food store with "all natural" stuff. All I could find was this Omega 3 "Fish Oil" 1000mg. It lists "Natural Fish Oil Concentrate 1000mg" on the label and below that EPA and DHA (the omega acids). In the ingredient list is says: "Fish Oil Concentrate (Anchovy, Mackerel, Sardine), Gelatin, Glycerine, d-Sorbitol and d-Alpha Tocopherol (Soy)". How does that sound? I tried to find anything without the d-Alpha Tocopherol (Soy) listed because I don't want to take soy and not one brand that I found didn't contain it!? I haven't opened the bottle yet so maybe I should just return it and not take it?

I used to be a drug rep that sold a drug called Omacor. It is the most potent and pure form of Omega-3 available. It goes through a multiple step filtration process to make sure that there is no mercury or other toxins. It is only available with prescription by a dr. though. I am taking it right now because there are studies that show that taking Omega-3's can increase fetal brain development.

stefkay - December 7th, 2006 2:20 PM

what I read one one brand I was looking at that wasn't on any of the others said that omega 3's help in the production of prostaglandins and work hormonally in the body. I don't know much about all of this, but isn't that NOT good because aren't prostaglandins what trigger contractions and cramps, etc. before AF??? Sorry, I really need to just chill about this...LOL! :-s

javidsgirl - December 7th, 2006 3:11 PM

the prostaglandins what you are speaking of are in flaxseed oil of which is why doctors say not to take during pregnancy. ok for example of fish oils The most common sources for omega 3 fish oil are:
Mackerel (Atlantic) ,Salmon (Atlantic) ,Trout ,Arctic Char but make sure the capusules are have no preseratives like soy the only ingredients besides the fish oils should be gelatin, glycerin and water of which are used to make the capsule there should be nothing else. i am sure where you are from but if you live in the us i know they have swiss herbal products there they have a omega 3 fish oil supplement or you can get one of the fish oils listed above . if you live in canada shooper drugmart sell lifebrand fish oils with no persatives like soy in them

javidsgirl - December 7th, 2006 3:13 PM

oh i just thought of another company that has natural and pure fish oil supplements puritans pride

javidsgirl - December 7th, 2006 3:15 PM

shoppers drugmart*

stefkay - December 7th, 2006 3:34 PM

you ROCK! Thanks again for all your help...I'm just so worried about what I put into my body now. I'll take these back and look around some more for a more pure supplement. So, if I bought Salmon Oil, it would be the same thing? I did see some of that and it had NO preservatives in it. I also have prenatals that I bought that have Red Raspberry, Spirulina and Ginger in them and I just read not to take red raspberry till the 3rd trimester!!! Geeeeez...I called the dr.'s office and they are calling me in some prenatals to the pharmacy, so I feel better just taking what they give me :-)
