I'm having a big problem. I'm 26 weeks and experienced horrible bleeding after a normal (no extra straining) bowel movement. Ended up in hospital twice. Was told that a polyp was found, but dr cannot conclude that that is the cause of the bleed. I'm scared to use the bathroom and wonder if anybody has any ideas of how I can keep the stools soft. I know drinking a lot of water and increasing fiber helps. Any specific foods or any help would be appreciated. I'm so worried. Thanks

I had a bad hemroid problem early in pregnancy and had severe bleeding and pain as well. I drank alot of water with lemon in it. I also ate fiber one cereal. Flax Seed helps you can put it in your food. I would just make sure I eat alot of fruit - grapes helped me stay pretty regular. They also say if you exercise it helps. I haven't had my problem since.

I am 31 weeks and found that I am anemic and now have to have iron supplements twice a day - but doc also told me to take a stool softener at the same time, to avoid the unpleasant side effects of the iron supplement - constipation. It's been working so far. The stool softener comes in a little pill you swallow with your meal, can be found at any drugstore, and I haven't noticed any side effects.

I've been having a bowl of Raisin Bran every morning and I find that it keeps my stool soft no matter what I eat during the day. If I skip it, I get constipated and the bleeding starts.

Lots of water - fruits - veggies - fish oil capsules (talk to your dr. first) - popcorn - oatmeal - fiber suplement (also talk to your dr.). I would really go the natural route first.

All Bran Plus cereal is great at keeping me more regular, I have it in the morning with fat free yoghurt and honey...

Thanks everyone. K, is colase safe while pregnant?? Also, Kris A, what kind of softener do u use? I'm going to keep my fiber up and get plenty of fruit. I'm just so scared to bleed like that again. Thanks again.

I also take colace as well, it is listed on the safe medications list my doctor gave at the beginning of pregnancy. If I don't go for more than 2 days, I immediately take one. It is very gentle not like a laxative.

I drank citrucel which is on my list of safe medications this helped me. It isn't to gritty and it tastes alot like tang. I also ate alot of green leafy and salds or "roughage" and the last thing that seems to also help is good old prune juice the most effective way I found was to warm it up a bit ( I learned that from working as a med tech in an assisted living home) Hope this helps
