I thought I would put this post up for any pregnant women who still smoke and are trying to quit. Everyone is welcome to join as long as you leave supporting posts, we are not after people to judge us as the reason we are here is because we want to do the right thing by our babies.
I guess we should introduce ourselves by saying how far along we are, maybe how much we smoke a day and what we have or are trying to do to quit.
Lets see if we can do it!

Hi I am Sarah, I live in Australia, I am 14 weeks 4 days along. I smoke about 5 cigs on a good day and up to 10 on a bad day. I am trying to quit/ cut down by knitting a baby blanket.

babymakes5 - November 14th, 2006 5:32 PM

Awesome, thanks Sarebare! I'm 9wk 2d and I used to smoke a pack a day. I went down to 2-5/day on day of BFP. Yesterday I only had 1 cig. I went on a website and took a test to see why I smoke and it came out that I was using it as a crutch, so now I need to find alternatives for stress relievers. My toughest time is in the van on the way to work and way home. Today I tried having a sucker when I got a craving. I only had one.

Sarebare - November 14th, 2006 5:42 PM

No problem Babymakes5, you are doing really well! Before i got the BFP I was smoking about 10 a day and I have only gotten down to 5 a day and 2 smoke free days out of the 8 weeks I have known that I was pregnant. What is this website with the test i would love to try it out myself. It has been 40 min since my last cig and already I want another, its funny I start grinding my teeth when I get cravings now which I never used to. Maybe I'll get another row on the blanket done hehe

Hi Sarebare, the website is: http://www.pmusa.com/en/qui
tassist/resource/index.asp.
I started out at Phillip Morris and they have a quit assist link. I think some of the craving have to do with boredom too. I think that's why I have such a hard time in the van. It's not a problem when my kids are in the car, but when I'm by myself, it' hard. I need to find an alternative for those times. I do like listening to music so that helps. Yesterday I had a total of 3 cigs. Today, 1 so far....how about you?

tyler0323 - November 15th, 2006 11:34 AM

hi there, im 22 weeks and this is my second pregnany and second one i have struggled to quit. The strange thing about this one, is after i found out i was pregnant, i started smoking more....There has been alot going on it my life these past few months and to quit during this time would put alot of added un needed stress. I too am going to start knitting to keep my hands busy...

babymakes5 - November 15th, 2006 12:19 PM

Welcome Tyler0323!! How much do you currently smoke? Did you smoke with your first pregnancy? DH says I'm worrying too much about this one becuz I didn't smoke with my other 3. We have a lot going on too, which is why I'm having such a hard time too...having 3 other kids to contend with (especially teens!) while I'm pregnant and tired is very stressful at times.

babymakes5 - November 15th, 2006 3:24 PM

Okay, this afternoon I'm having a really hard time. I think it's because I'm so tired!! What I wouldn't give to be at home right now. But if I leave early I will be shunned by everybody here. If you're not a workaholic here then you don't fit in! I'm finding myself wanting to go have a cigarette just to stay awake! I've had several root beer barrels, but it's not helping today....

Kristy77 - November 15th, 2006 6:14 PM

There is a really good book to assist with quitting smoking. It's called "The Easy Way to Quit Smoking" by Allen Carr. I read this when I wanted to quit smoking and it worked. I had to read it twice before I eventually became a non-smoker. Many of my friends have also used it to successfully become non-smokers. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to quit smoking. I read this book 2 years and 8 months ago and have not had a craving for cigarettes-ever. If reading books is not your thing, then I think Allen Carr offers face-to-face clinics. I'm pretty sure he has a website - just google his name. Good Luck!

Sarebare - November 15th, 2006 6:47 PM

Hi babymakes5, you did well yesterday, I had about 4 or 5 yesterday myself. Seeing as I have just woken up I haven't had any yet today. I plan on not having one until much later. I have the luxury of not working (hardly a luxury when broke lol) so I can sleep most of the morning which is when I seem to have my worst cravings. My boyfriend gets home for lunch at 12 and it is 10:30am now, so I have to at least wait until then for a cig as he has them.
I will check out that website and report my results later.
Hey tyler0323, I think I was the same way when I found out I was pregnant. I was excited but a little nervous too, I had a few days of chain smoking before I decided maybe it was time to quit or at least cut down. Knitting is good and i was thinking about getting into scrapbooking although it is almost summer here so I will be spending most of my time outdoors soon.
Hey Kristy77 I have that book, it worked for all of 1 week which is probably better than my last attempt of 2 days "Yippie I'm a non-smoker" did not cut it for me, maybe I will give it another go when I am done knitting the babies blanket otherwise I may give up on that project. Anything is worth a try and I really hate the idea of using patches and gum that come packed full of nicotine when that is what you are trying to get off in the first place.
Hey babymakes5, how about sending some of that root beer down this way. God I am so homesick for food it isn't funny, I miss root beer and dr pepper, jolly ranchers, spike seasoning, good pickles like the bicks brand, captain crunch, fruity pebbles, shreddies so I can make that nut and bolts mix cinnamin anything aussies don't like it I am a cinnamin gum fanatic lol mmmmmmmmmm foooood We do have a store in Melbourne that sells american food but it costs an arm and a leg literally to get anything $17Aus for a 12 pack of softdrink. My altoids gum was $6Aus and that was gone in 3 days. Ok back on topic hehe. Lets try to make this a day where we smoke at least one less cig than yesterday!

Sarebare - November 15th, 2006 6:52 PM

Oh great! I just read on the other smoking post that Dentyne Fire gum works great on cravings because cinnamin works on the same taste buds as nicotine, I am screwed lol

babymakes5 - November 16th, 2006 9:49 AM

Hi Sarebare-that's funny about the cinnamon. I have been craving those candy cinnamon discs but I can't seem to find any in the stores. Maybe that natural craving is trying to tell me something :) Today is Nov 16, which is the Great American Smokeout. So you're idea of smoking one less than yesterday is a great idea. Since we're on way different times, mine will be today the 16th instead of yesterday since I didn't get your post until today. I don't like the other nicotine vices either. I've tried the patch and I broke out in a rash. I tried the gum and it's awful! I tried the inhaler and well, that was just silly holding a filter and sucking nicotine! If I'm going to do this, it's going to be without the other nicotine "aids". Too bad I couldn't send you some cinnamon gum or candy!! Thanks Kristi77 for the info. I will definitely search the web for it. I've already had 2 today, and it's only 8:50am, so it's not a good start for me. I have my 1st Dr appt today and I was hoping to be able to tell them I quit. Oh well, here's to another day....

rl - November 16th, 2006 11:58 AM

hi ladies just wanted to let you know I faced that problem while prego with my ds and ya know what I smoked but I cut way back...only at most like 5 aday and most days I would not smoke at all but I just could not stop completely and my ds was born nice and healthy and in fact his pedi could not get over how strong he was as a newborn less than 24hrs old and he lifted his head up on his own....so try not to beat yourself up over smoking a couple here and there!!

tyler0323 - November 17th, 2006 11:30 AM

HI, yes i did smoke during my first pregnancy. i was having a coffee and a smoke the while having my first contractions at home...eesh i know. I smoke about 10 a day now, i think alot of it has to do with being so bored so im going to knitt and keep my hands busy. I have also heard of that book and had a friend read it and quit aswell. im going to see if i can find it this weekend.

babymakes5 - November 17th, 2006 12:37 PM

Hi all. Well I didn't do as good as I'd hoped yesterday. I think I had 5 (I was trying to go for 4), but it was one of those days...I know, I know, excuses, excuses. I think boredom is a big one for me to Tyler0323. Especially in the car driving. Yesterday I had 3 just driving to dr, to grocery store and home again. I want to look into that book too. I've also heard that using a helpline that you call into can help to. The Dr office gave me the hotline for my state. And they also gave me some information on a program called First Breath? I'll have to read it over and see what it's all about. My pack of cigarettes lasted from Monday thru Friday, so I guess that's not too bad...but could always be better, right? :) Good luck everyone over the weekend.

Sarebare - November 17th, 2006 5:32 PM

Hey girls, it seems it was a day for slip ups and it may be a weekend of them for me. I had about 10 yesterday but the fact that I indulged in a beer didn't help. I already want a cig this morning and I have a wedding and reception to go to this afternoon and evening so I just see drinks and smokes all around. Maybe I will try again on Sunday, maybe I should dig out my Allan Carrs book and see if he can talk me into quitting again ooooooooooh but its not quitting or giving up as he says, it is stopping. "Yippee I'm a non-smoker!" It doesn't have a great ring to me today... Oh yeah 15 weeks today! 25 weeks to go Yeehaw!

JezzPezz - November 17th, 2006 9:13 PM

Well, I'm about 10 weeks (guessing). I have gotten down to barely two ciggs a day. I'm really proud of myself. I went a whole day without smoking the other day.
