Hi everyone. I hear you Sarebare on having a hard time getting past the hump of smoking less. I did okay for a couple of days and now I haven't been able to go less than 5-6 a day for a few days now. I think as long as I keep buying them, I'll keep smoking them...I like your idea of a date! Every quit smoking plan I read about says that you need to set your quit date so that you can prepare for it. I think that it would be a great way tp do this together. After all, it's a Club, right? So...what date...I'm not sure about doing it before Xmas? That's such a stressful time of year (for me anyways). I'll have to talk it over with dh and see what he says. How did your mystery shop go? I always wondered about that-what it would be like. Helping to design a storefront sounds like great fun! How did it go? Anyone else interested in setting a date? We can do this guys!!!

Sarebare - November 24th, 2006 6:04 PM

babymakes5, I agree with the not before xmas, I have to go to the ashes on boxing day and it is a party atmosphere so I dare say I will be indulging in a couple of cold beers and smoking like a chimney. I might be going to a Brant Bjork concert for nye as well and the same thing will happen again for sure. I am just worried about smoking while I am showing and what reaction I will be getting from people. We will see anyway.
The mystery shop went well, I only had to do a customer service report about phone manner and instore service I didn't need to buy anything this time.
I haven't started on the storefront yet, I better see what I can throw together over the weekend since i will be on the laptop all weekend anyway listing my old stuff on ebay.
So does your dh smoke as well. My boyfriend does but I don't want him to quit until a week or 2 after me otherwise I might panic that there are no cigs around.
Do you have any plans for the weekend? It is cricket for the ashes all weekend here so i will watch some and spend most of the weekend online.......

HI! I'm neither pregnant or a smoker - but very judgemental. I do have a 3 month old baby and I had a threatened miscarriage at 8 weeks. I wa svery anti pregnant smokers before and was even worse after, to the point I'd have to hold myself off saying something. I suppose it is difficult for someone who hasn't felt the power of addiction to know how hard to it would be to fight. After reading these posts I am trying to stop being so judgemental of people who smoke when pregnant. This topic looks like it will be of great support to you all. I hope this hasn't come across as bad because I think all of you should be very proud of your determination to quit and I wish you every success.

Allisonc79 - November 25th, 2006 5:59 PM

Girls you CAN quit smoking. Stop telling yourself anything else. I was a smoker for 13 years. I quit cold turkey about 3 months ago. I don't crave them at all being pregnant. I couldn't smoke one if I tried. Not only does it hurt the fetus, it also can hurt you. I am sure you are aware of that. They say it is hard or nearly impossible to quit. I am proof it is not. The best way to do it is to put your cigs in a drawer, leave them alone. Test yourself if you can stay away from them for 3 days. Thats about the time it takes for it to leave your system, your symptoms after that are purely emotional. Trust me doing it cold turkey is the only way. Using the patch or gum only prolongs the withdraw. In about 2 weeks you will be amazed at how you don't want a cigarette.

Tara B - November 25th, 2006 6:03 PM

Oy...Yesterday my boyfriend and I got in a stupid arguement and I wanted a cigarette so bad. I mean I never wanted one so bad in my life. Also, not having any weed is killing me. I keep thinking if I just take one hit, but then I think well what happens when I am stoned? I will just sit there and possibly have anxiety about the fact that I smoked weed and won't be able to enjoy it, so I will wait for both. 20w2d still doing good about 4 1/2 months to go.

Sarebare - November 25th, 2006 7:47 PM

sophandbob and Allisonc79 thanks for the support it is not an easy thing to try and do at all. I have already had one today but I seen to take it slower on the weekends anyway. My weekday smoking has gone up to 6-8 a day now but I find it is making me sick.
Tara B that is great that you still managed to say no to smoking. I think I might try to quit cold turkey tomorrow, I have had really bad heartburn and morning sickness has popped up again suddenly so it should be easier to quit if I tell myself it is caused by the smoking. 16 weeks 1 day and counting, I would like to be quit by the 18th week before I start to show but like babymakes5 said, Xmas is such a hard time to quit. It might just make me stronger to have quit and stay quit around that time.

babymakes5 - November 27th, 2006 10:34 AM

Hi everyone. bravo, Tara B, I wish I could have that self control and say No! It's just so hard. Today I have my first appt with OB doc and I'm signing up for the First Breath program. You have your own one on one counselor and the pride themselves on being non-judgemental and that's what I need because the guilt I already have is enough. I hear you Sarebare about showing and what people will think. They even had a radio talkshow on it once where the dj's were in a bar and a pg woman was in there smoking. I couldn't believe how many people were calling in and ripping on her. If only people could understand :( Hopefully this First Breath thing will work for me. I like the idea of having someone to call when I need to or have a craving. They will help me come up with a quit plan too. Something that's difficult for me to do. No, Sarebare, my dh doesn't smoke, but isn't too hard on me for it. He would like to see me go down to 2 a day, but understands if I can't. I know what you mean about panicking about having no cigarettes around. Every time I'm out, even though I could've just had my last one, it's all I can think about it until I go get another pack. But if I keep buying them, I keep smoking them. Ugh!!!! I'll let you know how the First Breath works..it's specifically for pregnant women trying to quit, so I like that it. Good luck!

ophelia73 - November 27th, 2006 11:26 AM

Alisonc79 - I'm with you. I quit as soon as I found out. I told myself it is absolutely not an option to smoke, and that helped me a lot. Knowing I didn't have the option kept me from thinking about it. The first 3 or 4 days were rough, but after that, no problems. I barely think about it anymore, and can't stand the smell of smoke. After I have been somewhere smoky, I go straight home & change clothes because it makes me sick to my stomach. I am not judging anyone at all - I have lots of friends who still smoked heavily during their pregnancies, but you CAN quit. Just think about baby's need for you to breath clean, healthy air. Trust me, it does help to think that way.

Hi there, My name is Karen, Im Irish and Im 21 weeks pregnant. I smoke about 4 a day... I dont know why I cant seem to give up! There is a lot going on in my life at the moment, not only have I just got married, I left my home and family to move to South Africa in August and THEN found out I was pregnant!!! Im just annoyed with myself because I know Im doing harm by smoking but when I do get a craving for a cigarette, its so intense that I just have to have one! I have cut down a hell of a lot but I wish I could just stop! I suppose it doesnt help that my husband smokes either but I know its no excuse!!!!!! Good luck to everyone though... believe me.. I know how hard it is! x

babymakes5 - November 28th, 2006 10:38 AM

Welcome Karen! And don't worry-we all feel the same way! It's soooooo hard. This morning I was going to get up and try not to have that 1st cig in the morning. I had a stressful time getting the kids up and started getting all stressed out--so I gave in. It's so frustrating. And you moving so far from your family! A wedding and pregnancy in the same year-I can relate! It seems there's always something on the horizon that we glom on to as a reason to stay smoking. I'm in the process of coming up with a quit date so that I can have a plan. Not sure if I can do it before xmas though! Good luck and keep us posted. We're all here for support!

Steph - November 28th, 2006 3:09 PM

Hey ladies...I quit smoking when I was 8 weeks along with my son (who is now 5 months old) and what really helped me was drinking a lot of water, chewing gum, and keeping busy! Anyways, I hope you all the best of luck in quitting...I know it's hard, but it CAN be done!! :o)

guccigal87 - November 28th, 2006 4:12 PM

well i am 31 weeks and just thought i should give my opinion! i have been smoking for almost 7 years... sad thing is im only 19!! and JUST now have i been able to cut down my smoking.. i find that instead of buying a pack of smokes when i need one i buy what we call prime times.. they are mini cigars.. with a little bit of flavor.. they are cheap and then i can smoke JUST ONE and not have a whole pack to temp me with.. and i find that has helped me A LOT because when i have the pack i figure i bought them ill smoke them.. i am NOT perfect though i have stolen smokes from my boyfriend because well sometimes MY GOD it feels good to put that thing in my mouth! HAHA and my mom smoked with me and im fine so i dont see any REAL harm in it.. the one thing i did have problems with is my quiting weed.. i LOVED it and smoked it three times a day! havent for months now but TRUST ME sometimes that craving is WAY WORSE then my ciggarette craving!! i think its cuz that makes me more happy the the cig! but thankfully i just figured that weed was one thing I CANT SMOKE WHILE PREGNANT even though my doctor said it was ok.. which i found wierd.. he also told me not to quit smoking right away.. has anyone else gotten this advice from doctors about smoking weed or other?

babymakes5 - November 28th, 2006 4:22 PM

I just went to my doc yesterday and he said he'd rather I smoke weed than cigs because of all the chemicals. He said even though some are lucky and the babies turn out okay, some don't. The weed is the hardest for me to quit too, how far along were you when you quit the weed. He didn't say anything about not quitting it right away. I think your doc might mean that sometimes the baby can develop an addiction just like fetal alcohol syndrome and might go into shock without it. But I read that that would only happen if you smoked it up until delivery and then your baby would be without it when delivered. And that's only if you smoke a lot, way more than you did. He told me that the biggest reason I should quit the weed was because it's illegal and he didn't want me to get into any trouble with the law. And if anyone finds out when the baby's born and they do a blood test and find an illegal substance in the baby's blood then child services can step in. A good reason to quit! He also told me that he personally thinks it should be legal and wasn't judging me. I thought that was way cool that he was straight up with me and not judgemental. I really, really want to quit both though!!! I'm only 11 wks, but want to quit very, very soon. I wish I could buy 1 cig at a time, I think that would help.

Sarebare - November 28th, 2006 4:45 PM

Well here goes ladies, I smoked like a chimney yesterday and I am sure I have stored up plenty of nicotene in my system to last me a week. I was woken up at 3am by babys first real movements and this morning I could feel kicks, now I feel like there is someone else in there that I need to look out for and it isn't going to get any easier by putting it off so I am going to take the plunge and quit as of today.

guccigal87 - November 28th, 2006 8:20 PM

well babymakes5 i quit smoking weed when i was 6 weeks pregnant... thats as soon as i found out! but for the first seix weeks i did it heavily.. and my doctor said it wont harm the baby .. he said not to quit smoking cigs right away because that can cause the baby to go through withdrawls and if i want to quit i need to do it slowly. but i still want to smoke weed every now and then specailly when im out with people and they are smoking it and im lik eAHHH i want that feeling! haha but i know that i cant so i jsut dont.. and yea its soo much easier when you can buy it one at a time! because then you dont haev the whole pack sitting at you.. maybe see if someone is willing to help you with that.. like if you buy a pack of smokes.. take three for the WHOLE WEEK and then you cant have anymore till the next week .. that might help ..
