Period With Breastfeeding

I have an 8 month old baby. I am only breastfeeding and not giving him any solids. I just got my period. (I'm not taking any birth control.) If I continue to only breastfeed -will this help in preventing me from getting pregnant or once I got my period it totally doesn't help.

With my last DD I got a period around 10 months and then didn't get one again until she was 14 months. My other kids I had regular periods once they started. You have to assume now that you could get pregnant.
