last night i was able to finally hear the heartbeat. i am almost 18 wks. anyways, it sounds really slow to me. i have checked it twice since last night. i count and it seems to me its only somewhere between 70-72 bpm. i am scared to death! does the thing just not work very well? has anyone experienced this and everything was ok? i have an ultrasound in a couple days but im scared for my baby. i got perscribed percocet a few months ago for my back and still have some left (cuz i hate taking them) but i took one yesterday for severe back and headache pain. i have taken it 3 times throughout my pregnancy so far. just for my extreme head and back pains. i never take more than one pill in a day and i wont take them at all if its harming my baby. please someone tell me something! im so scared.

You should never take anything without your doctor's approval or it being on their approved list. Try some Tylenol first. If that's not working, you really need to speak with your doctor. Does your OB even know you've been doing this. Plus, are you getting a read out of beats or just guessing at it?

I was given percocet after my c-section, and was told that it wasn't harmful while breastfeeding - so either it doesn't pass through breastmilk or it's not harmful to the baby; I would definately advise that you not take any more until you've talked to your doctor about it. Also ask your doctor about the heartbeat you're hearing; if your baby's heartbeat is that low, there may be a problem. The other possibilty is that you're hearing something else, not the heartbeat. Your doctor will be able to fully set your mind at ease, or address any problem that exists.

There is a good chance that what your hearing is your own pulse, probably coming from the placenta. I would stop taking the Percocet until you see your doctor and find out if it's safe to take during pregnancy. In the mean time, when you think you've found baby's heartbeat, and it seems low, search around more to see if you can pick up another one...a faster one. It probably would still be fairly low in your pelvis (maybe about half way between your pubic bone and belly button) and usually off to one side. Don't panic though, even at 18 weeks the doctors may have some trouble trying to track down your little one!! Good luck! :)
