[Original Post]

With all the crazy things on other sites, the thought of fathering a child is very scary.

I am thrilled to see on this site a woman talking rationally but still emotionally about the benefits of an epidural. I hope this site has more people like these, because it seems to be the only one in the whole world.

clindholm - October 17th, 2008 12:33 PM

It's a personal choice for each mother to make. Both options are "rational".

collin237 - October 17th, 2008 4:38 PM

Some women want to give birth at home. That's not rational.

E586467 - October 17th, 2008 11:27 PM

How is giving birth at home not rational??? Have you even bothered to research home births before coming to this conclusion? Don't be naive & assume that the 'benefits' of modern medicine are always best for labour & birth, because I can tell you here & now that they are not. Every woman has the right to choose whether or not she has medical pain relief & if her pregnancy is safe also has the choice as to whether or not she births in a hospital.

If you are one of these people that assumes that everything a doctor tells you is correct & that hospital birth is necessarily better, than I'm sorry to tell you but your thinking is NOT rational or educated.

collin237 - October 18th, 2008 5:07 AM

I never said that doctors are "always right".

Why are all these women saying it's their right to be irresponsible about their babies and stay at home and have an "experience"? If it were about anything except birth, it would be a male attitude for women to criticize. If a woman can be a macho pig about OUR baby, I can darn well be a responsible sissy.

Modern medicine is not the whole story of how to birth safely, but it is an indispensible part, offering benefits the world has never before seen.

Modern medicine is knowledge, not business. When doctors make decisions for business reasons, those decisions are not medical.

Midwives and doulas refuse to provide techniques to augment modern medicine. Their only concern seems to be fighting it. I will not risk the life of my baby to fill the pockets of midwives, doulas, or MediVac staff.

E586467 - October 18th, 2008 7:58 AM

Thankyou for proving my point about you not being educated on the matter. I don't know what country you live in for you to have such an irrational fear, but if you bothered to do some research or actually talk to a midwife/doula you would see that they DO NOT condone home birth if there is any risk of complication & in fact statistically it is NO more dangerous then birthing at a hospital. How can you say that women are putting their babies at risk by wanting to do it at home, when doctors themselves cause alot more complications by doing unnecessary 'medical procedures' like sweeping of membranes etc before the due date.

I don't agree to home birth if there are obvious reasons why a woman should birth at a hospital under medical supervision eg breech, low lying placenta, vbac etc, but for you to criticise something you obviously haven't researched is just arrogant & stupid.

Home birth or natural birth in a hospital without drugs isn't about a woman feeling the need to be MACHO it is about trusting her body to do what it was made to do GIVE BIRTH. It is NOT your body that has to go through it so what right do you have to criticise how a woman feels is the right way to birth?

E586467 - October 18th, 2008 7:59 AM

Also why is it that your post was NOT about home birth but rather about epidurals, yet the first woman to answer your post saying it is every womans choice to choose one or not, you automatically make it about home birth. Do you know ANYTHING about epidurals? They are a wonderful medical invention but they can also cause alot of complications for the mother & baby. I don't know how much you actually know about birth, but just because a woman has a baby in a hospital DOES NOT mean she has to choose pain relieving drugs to birth her baby if she doesn't want, she is just as rational as a woman that wants drugs to cope.

collin237 - October 18th, 2008 10:00 AM

The claim that there are no intrinsic dangers of home birth is a lie propogated by George Bush's NIH.

And let me repeat that DOCTORS ARE NOT ALWAYS RIGHT. But if they are wrong, they are wrong IN SPITE OF modern medicine, not because of it. That's why there are birth plans to protect your medical rights.

I mentioned the article on epidurals because it's an example of a woman smart enough to ignore the home birth propaganda.

collin237 - October 19th, 2008 4:09 AM

There is always a chance of complications. So I don't have the right to want medical care for my wife and baby? Maybe I don't have the right to get her pregnant at all. Why don't I just get a vasectomy? Why don't all men get a vasectomy, and the Earth can finally be rid of the plague of humanity. Is that what you want???

collin237 - October 19th, 2008 5:06 AM

You think a woman's purpose is to give birth? And what would you say her purpose is for the rest of her life, cleaning the house??? Are you really a woman???

Newsflash: We are not rabbits. We are PEOPLE. Our purpose is to think, to invent, and to improve the quality of life. Whatever happened to Women's Lib???

E586467 - October 19th, 2008 7:17 AM

collin237 are you mentally unstable????

I hadn't even responded to your last ridiculous comment about buying into the propaganda of homebirth & how women aren't smart if they don't choose drugs & a hospital, yet here you are HOURS later raving like a complete lunatic. I don't know maybe you should get a vasectomy, it sure sounds like you have anger management problems!!

Your inability to even try to understand someone else's choices, goes to show that you yourself have indeed bought into the propaganda that a woman is useless at giving birth without the aid of drugs & doctors. How is that advancement of the human race?

Do you always twist peoples words to try to make yourself seem right? I not once said that a womans purpose in life was to have children, clean the house or any of the other crap you came out with, rather that her BODY was made to give birth. Do you know any of the physiological changes that happen during pregnancy to make birth possible? It is amazing what a pregnant womans body goes through in preparation for birth, & that is what I was referring to.

Of course there is the chance of complications during birth but there is also a chance of being in a car accident EVERYDAY, does that mean we should all live in irrational fear & not drive anywhere or put our children in the car just in case?

Your whole argument is baseless & uniformed, not to mention you have not stated any logical or factual reason why a woman with a low risk pregnancy can't have a natural birth (hospital or home) without insulting women who choose to do so (yet you talk about womens lib, how hypercritical can you be).

Obviously you are only on here to argue & degrade women who make choices that you don't approve of, so I honestly feel sorry for your wife (if you have one) as you come across as a man that gets angry if he can't CONTROL a womans decisions.

Do yourself a favour & do some research, & maybe you will see that while it is obviously NOT for everyone, natural birth (even in a hospital) & home birth is not the dangerous, irrational choice that you seem to think it is. Also research about the drugs used during labour & birth & the complications that can arise & maybe you will understand why some women choose not to use them.

I wish you luck when you do father a child & hope you are able to sort through some of these issues & fears you seem to have regarding birth & womens choices.

collin237 - October 19th, 2008 8:58 AM

If you don't want to accept the chance of complications in birth, if you want to claim that it's as small as something like a car crash, if you feel that your body is useless if you admit this, then I pity you.

Fortunately, you are a lone voice who doesn't even give herself a name, so you obviously are not a representative of this site.

clindholm - October 20th, 2008 2:15 PM

E586467- I would ignore this poster. Obviously he has some deeper issues and wants to debate.

Although home birth is not for me, a co-worker had a very pleasant, uneventful home birth for religious reasons. This was decided upon by both her and her husband.

As far as Doctors only being wrong "in spite of" of modern medicine not "because of" it, that is complete bull. Think of the whole vaccination issue and all the children (as well as adults) that have been harmed due to the big pharmaceutical companies propaganda that they only want whats best for us and none of the mandates are due to the billions of dollars they receive. The fact that vaccine mandates have more than tripled in the last 20 or so years. Gee, how can they be wrong? Think also of all the children in the third world countries that have had to be guinea pigs for these vaccines and suffered and died for the greed?
So yes, modern medicine can be a wonderful thing but we are all responsible for questioning what is right and wrong and taking control of our own health and the health of our families.

collin237 - October 20th, 2008 4:35 PM

Harmed with what? Autism?

I'm PROUD to be autistic, and I'm sick of all the "concerned parents" that call autism an aberration that has to be eradicated.

You people would risk diseases like measles picking up again, just so your children will be typical fad-followers.

collin237 - October 20th, 2008 5:41 PM

My mother just told me home birth is rational. I believe her. Please forgive me for all the trouble I've caused you.

clindholm - October 21st, 2008 8:44 AM

No, not just autism. I am so sick of everyone latching onto Autism and Thimersal just because that is what the media has focused on. There are a wide range of serious, life threatening issues (as well as SIDS) associated with vaccines which effectiveness has not been proven. Do a little research.
Evidently there is only one women you respect, your mom.

Wow, what an interesting post. The birth of a child is a personal experience between to people. It involves different views, experiences and feelings. I am 28 weeks pregnant and my fiance and I have chosen to birth our child in a hospital. However I believe midwives, doulas, birthing centers and home births are also great options to consider when having a baby. It's all about what works best for your situation. Also we have considered having a doula assist us in the labor/delivery of our baby at the hospital.
