Help!! Okay so My ds Caden is 13 days old. He was sleeping for 2-3 hour period up until yesterday. Now he seems to fall asleep nursing (very normal) but them as soon as i put him down in his bassinet during the day he wakes up.......and wants to fuss and cry..........i dont get it, he cant be hungry every 30 mins can he? can he be getting spoiled with wanting to be held? isnt it to soon for that? Even at night he is sleeping less and wanting to eat more frequently....what do i do??

ssmith - April 18th, 2007 2:43 PM

feed him :-)

mosley12 - April 18th, 2007 2:45 PM

lol i have to go with ssmith..he's 13 days old. he cant be spoiled..my cayden is almost 6 months old and within the last month or so has really learned how to do things to get what he wants (crying, fake cough), a 13 day old baby cries when he needs something, and if he is crying after you put him down when he fell asleep eating, he is probably still hungry

LisaB - April 18th, 2007 2:46 PM

you cant spoil them before 6 months so no 13 days old is wayyyyyyyy to young to even consider spoiled. Youre lo is finally waking up simple as that. At this age feed him when hes hungry, hold him when hes fussy, love him at all times. Right now his needs need to be meet when he needs them to be. COnsider getting a sling soyou can wear him around so hes being held. Also when nursing him stroke his cheek, feet, hands ect to stimulate him to eat sometimes it helps.

lol........okay......i get that part but why is he suddenly wanting to eat constantly and not sleep? I didnt breastfeed my dd and i dont remember her doing this...but then again it has been almost 3 1/2 years..my memory maybe failing me..........will this stop??

vanja10 - April 18th, 2007 2:55 PM

growth spurt at 2 weeks is what's happening. Mine wanted to eat every hour, very frustrating and it lasted for couple of days.

vanja10 - April 18th, 2007 2:57 PM

looking online, they happen at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 6 wks, 3 monhs, 4 months, 6 months roughly

Yup, probably a little growth spurt...remember too he was all cuddled in your uterus, nice and soft and warm, so he probably likes the comfort of being held! Do you swaddle him now? My dd did that too with the frequent nursing...I called the lactation consultant crying...and in a couple of days she was back to spacing it out every couple of hours.

Thanks ladies, It helps knowing that this is normal. I feel exhausted though and of course my hubby comes home last night and says to me wow you look like a wreck, didnt you sleep when caden slept? Ha when did caden sleep? and try to coordinate that with my 3 year old that thinks naps should happen anymore........ahhhhhhh. Vanjay thanks for the tip about a growth spurt. it just feels like he is constantly awake!!

Mingill - April 18th, 2007 3:11 PM

13 days is too young to be getting spoiled. It's likely a growth spurt. I know my DS ate almost every hour when he was growing. The growth spurts hit around, 2-3 weeks, 6-8 weeks, 3 months and 6 months. When a growth spurt hits, even if your baby was sleeping through the night, they may not during the spurt. Feed him, when he's full he'll stop eating.

Kristin11 - April 18th, 2007 3:15 PM

DB thanks for that. I felt like crying last night as i got up for the hundreth time!! Pretty bad when you fall asleep and wake up during the same show!!!

DDT - April 18th, 2007 3:32 PM

I can't see how a baby can feed and then be hungry again 30mins later...growth spurt or not. How long does he feed for at a time? If he's falling asleep maybe he is not getting everything he needs during that feed. Wake him up if he falls asleep by wriggling him or burping him and then put him on boob again. I don't think he should get into the habit of snacking or using you as a pacifer.

Kristin11 - April 18th, 2007 3:38 PM

DDT i try to wake him by stripping him, burping him, ect no help, he will suck for maybe 5 seconds more and fall back to sleep, but then i lay him down in his bassinett and boom suddenly he is awake.

DDT - April 18th, 2007 3:45 PM

He is obviously not getting enough to eat if he is only feeding for 5 seconds at a time as you say. How is his weight gain? Hmmm....I don't know what else to suggest to keep him awake...maybe dip his hand or foot in cool/cold water to wake him? As for the sleeping...he doesn't nap well either? do you swaddle him?

sophandbob - April 18th, 2007 4:25 PM

You can never spoil anyone, no matter what the age, with cuddles when they are crying! Growth spurt would be my theory on this too.

DeeD - April 18th, 2007 5:49 PM

There is no way he can be spoiled! Maybe he needs to nurse longer. Wake him up and feed some more...se if that helps.

eclipse - April 18th, 2007 5:53 PM

My little pulled that too and I would touch his face, and tickle him, or play with his feet, or stroke his side so he would wake up and keep eating. He needs to eat more than he is and is probably in a growth spurt.
