So today I went shopping with my two children. My dd was walking and my son was in the cart. We had checked out and we were leaving. In this particular store there is an automatic door at the exit that leads to an enclosed area with gumball machines, newspaper stands ect. Then there is another automatic door in that area that lead into the parking lot. We were going through the first set of doors and she was dawdling behind me. There was a railing just to the side of the door and before the door had closed behind her, my daughter decided to swing from it like a monkey. I was saying "hurry up." and going over to take her hand when the door began to close. It was an older door which was quite heavy and it began to trap her between the railing and the door frame. She was too short and too close to the door for the sensor to "notice" her. She ended up getting backed into the door frame with half of her body in, and half of it out and the door still trying to close. I finally was able to yank it open and drag her out. By that time she was just screaming and crying. I don't think she really got hurt, but I'm sure she could have. She was just terrified and it took a while to calm her down. I just wanted to post this as a warning to ALWAYS hold your child's hand while walking through those doors. Especially older models that may not be up to current codes. I think it traumatized both of us. I left the store in a hurry, but I think I may call them later to check it out and see if there was a problem. It seems like the door should have swung back open after meeting resistance or have been easier for me to get open.

HOLY CRAP!!! I'm glad she is ok. That is pretty scary-since pretty much every store uses them. Sort of like the escalator theory-never let them leave your sight and expect that it will be problematic so you are ready. Fast action, mamacita.

I have always been scared of automatic doors, including elevator doors for this reason. I would definitely call and complain and get info. I'll be curious to know what they say/do about it.

How scary!!! You need to call that store. Those doors are safety hazards. we had this happen in a store around here and all the stores had to update and replace the older doors with the sensors placed to high up. This could result in a lawsuit for the chain so it is in their best interest to replace that door!
