Air Purifier?

Ladies, for those of you who live in the city, have you purchased an air purified for the baby? We live in a Manhattan apartment, and the air quality is poor. Do air purifiers work? I am thinking about the ionic purifier from sharper image. it's expensive - about $500. i also understand you could only use it when the apartment is empty... thus it may be harmful. .. any thoughts??

i was told by my prof ( two or three PHD's) that these do work. i also speifically asked if they would harm the baby.she said that if you turn it on once in a while during the day to purify the air that it would be ok. it would have to be placed right near the baby for a few days to do damage. She also said that these machines create ozone which in small doses is beneficial in cleaning the air. these molecules are so unstable that they will react to something in the air usually before they even reach you.
