exactly d! - those kids know whats going on, and are old enough to have conflicted feelings about it. if you're truly still doing it for nutrition - then pump.....god, they can drink out of a cup by then anyways. |

I just can't imagine breastfeeding a toddler. When my son was 2 he was eating just about everything and feeding himself. I can't see the benefits of me feeding him at that point. I was told by my son's Dr. that after a year the nutrition benefits aren't there that the child needs to eat food. Talk about an inconvenience to everyone and how will the child ever learn to eat at the table like a person? I don't see how this has anything to do with formula companies? I guess this is just my opinion. |

GROSS!! |

I just saw on the news this morning that they said babies who are breastfed for at least the first 6 months are at a lower risk for illnesses and other things. I figure I'll keep it up for 6 months and if it's going good I'll keep it up till 12 months when they can go to regular milk. I wonder why mom's keep it up after 12 months if they can go on regular milk? I know breastmilk is healthier but I can't imagine trying to feed a one year old unless |

Breastfeeding until 2 1/2 years of age or more isn't gross. Its life. And I'm almost positive, that those who are being breastfed for so long also eat food and have other things to help nourish, besides a boob! So no, its not gross! You people need to find a different meaning for the word gross! Here's mine....! ...... A 500lb. woman from Illinois was examined in a hospital. During the examination, an asthma inhaler fell from under her arm pit, a dime was found under one of her breasts and a remote control was found lodged between the folds of her vulva. eeewwwww.....Or....A 20 year old man came into the ER with a stony mass in his rectum. He said that he and his boyfriend were fooling around with concrete mix, when his boyfriend had the idea of pouring the mix into his anus using a funnel (you'd do the same, I'm sure!)?!!. The concrete then hardened, causing constipation and pain. Under general anesthesia, a perfect concrete cast of the man's rectum was removed along with a ping pong ball! Now that is GROSS! |

Lol! Urgh! That truly is the meaning of gross! How bored do you have to be with a relationship, to get to the point where you need concrete mix to spice things up?! People are so weird! |

you can lose weight! i lost 15 pounds while breastfeeding. eat better, exercise and put away the junk (if you eat any). i breastfed alexandra till she was 15 months old, and only stopped then because i got pregnant and my milk supply seemed to extinguish itself. bummer! i do miss it....anyway, they do recommend that you do it for at least a year, just because of all the immunity health benefits and such. when allex got teeth, she did bite me once or twice, but a firm NO and taking her off the latch was enough to stop it right then. she refused to eat ANYTHING solid till she was 10 months old, so we had no choice but to keep on going. but i'm glad we did. i've never regretted it. :) |

I don't think the topic about people's sexual gratifications relates to breastfeeding. I don't see the need for extended breastfeeding in a developed country where there is good running water and less deseases around. Also, you give waht's really needed during the first year. Also, children's understanding of sexual parts starts very early these days and to think of breasts differently, privately, something daddy should only be seeing. They don't see it only as a source for milk only . I think this is the point. I mean what's next for dad to walk around with his penis out because so what its natural and it pees? Not! Its private and they know that by preschool age. Not to mention if other children that age found out and start to tease" Your a baby" "you suck boob". Its not the norm and I can't see it happening in public at older ages in developed countries. |

I grew up in a house where boobs were private parts and didn't feel comfortable breastfeeding. Some people are just more free I guess I am more shy when it comes to my body. My mom also said when I was born that no one breastfed because you were thought to be poor if you did. Anyway I see no need for breastfeeding after the first year either. |

I seriously need someone to tell me, for those of you breastfeeding toddlers - why are you not pumping and putting it in a damn cup if you think breastmilk is so important?!?! They do not need your boob in their mouth!!!! If you say it's a comfort thing - give them a hug, a kiss, and a friggen teddy bear. |

the world health organization actually recommends breastfeeding until age 2. so there must be SOME benefit to it. my daughter was lifting up my shirt at 11 months looking for her "nummy", so if that's all it takes to be grossed out, then i guess i should have stopped earlier. NOT!!! |

I think everybody has gotten off track with Lissi's original posting.I don't think it's anybodies business how long they want to breastfeed. This site is to seek advice, not to impose your believings. |

Nature gave women boobs NOT as sexual objects but as the source of nourishment for their children. It is not gross to breastfeed a child - whether that is to nourish them, comfort them, or just give them sucking satisfaction. I don't recall Nature whipping up plastic bottles and rubber nipples to take care of baby's needs. Moms do it best. To those who say there is no need to go beyond a year, perhaps there is no real NEED, but baby is still drawing immunity against diseases from breastmilk. that's why breast babies get sick less, have less diarrhea, etc. If something so natural makes you uncomfy, then perhaps you're just a bit too sexualized. if there even is such a thing. |

Breastfed babies getting less sick? I am not so sure about that one. It is what the experts say but my sister and SIL both breastfed their children for a year and their kids are sick all of the time. My SIL's kids get strep throat and ear infections like crazy. They were never in daycare and are very clean people. I just wonder what real research they have on this issue. I am not questioning breast being best I just wonder about the sickness. I tried to bf my son but it was too painful and he has always been very healthy. Only had 1 ear infection and a couple colds since birth and is 3. I also have several friends who didn't bf and their children are also healthy. |
