Hi ladies! I"m just jumping over from the second tri board( due in August). Well, I find out the sex of the baby next week and want to start shopping around. So my question is this- what are the basic necessities that you believe every infant needs?Of course clothes, diapers, bottles, etc but how much of each? Just the basic necessities please I just want basic so I can at least start off and get that before getting the fun stuff. Also, what did you do about sizes? How much clothing for each size ( NB,0-3,3-6,) is needed? thanks!!

I wouldn't buy too many NB clothes, especially if you find out by ultrasound that your baby is going to be a decent size. Actually I wouldn't buy too many of any of those early sizes....they grow out of them SO fast. I honestly can't even count how many little outfits I have packed away in the attic that still had the tags on them, which made me feel wasteful. So definitely less is the way to go, IMO. Lots of onesies since it will most likely be pretty hot when you take your baby home. I would also invest in the Munchkin bottle sterilizer from Target (or anything similar to that). It was only $25 I believe and was a godsend to us. And a good baby swing is also worth it's weight in gold. We had the fisher price aquarium one. GL to you and your lo.

I would say start off with a few of the NB or 0-3, just enough where you're not doing laundry everyday. They grow out of them fast, usually. Then get a few more of the 3-6month. Diapers, for us, we were given a BUNCH of NB (which she didn't wear, but she was a big baby when she was born), she went straight to 1s for only about a month then 2s, and now she's been in size 3s for a while. Wipes, lots of wipes, unsented is best, IMO. Bottles, are you going to breastfeed? If so you'll need a breast pump (it makes it easier) and less # of bottles, if your new baby will take them. Are you going to be having a baby shower? Because a lot of this stuff you will get there, recieving blankets, burp clothes, bibs, yada yada yada. What I did was go through walmart.com and look up their baby stuff and basically put down at least one of each! I would request a baby shower, it will save you money in the long run!!

Clothing...this varies so much. Don't buy a lot of NB they grow out of that size extremely fast unless your baby is very tiny.... but, I barely bought any 0-3, but guess what my dd is small (she was 7lb3oz at birth) and is 11 weeks and is still in 0-3 and probably will be for another few weeks, so that is hard to say...some babies go right to 0-3 instead of NB and then jump to 3-6 really quick...maybe get a few of each size and then go shopping a few weeks after the baby is born and you'll know the sizes better? If someone would've told me how much my dd would poop on her changing pad I would've bought 10 of these things!! But they do sell little "sheets" of throw away paper to put over the changing pad so if something slips out mid-diaper change you'll be ready, of course wipes, I love Huggies wipes, HATE huggies diapers...Hate pampers wipes, LOVE Pampers diapers...um, lots of bibs incase you have a spitter, or else you'll be doing a lot of laundry and burp rags....I don't know about bottles since I breastfeed...we only need a few since she rarely gets bottles, but if you are going to bottlefeed maybe get a couple of a few different kinds...some babies are picky about the nipples, so don't invest in 20 bottles of the same design in case your baby hates that nipple, just a thought. Sleep sacks are fantastic once you stop swaddling your baby. We have about 6 of them, but some are warmer and some are lighter. And receiving blankets to swaddle your newborn in, and a good diaper bag. You'll need a carseat and stroller, so maybe a travel system if you can afford it or register for it and hopefully you'll get it as a gift. I have a Chicco travel system and I like it...that is all the basics I can think of...fun stuff...swings etc!! Read reviews too on babies r us's webpage, a lot of moms write reviews and it's extremely helpful to know what items are crappy before you spend $ on it. Good luck to you.

My baby was larger than expected, so the newborn stuff fit for about 5 minutes (LOL). Onesies, and many of them!!! Some footed jammies for nights. I would get some 3-6, a few 0-3 and maybe one or two newborn but they may not last, especially if your lo is long or heavy. I think I went through a few packs of newborn diapers but you can get away with the size 1's...buy at least 3 big packages of 1's if not more...costco and sam's club are your friends. I get the big box of wipes from Costco and go through them in about 3 1/2 weeks. If you are planning to breastfeed, look into a pump-Medela Pump in Style advanced is excellent-Ebay has the best price. You may want to wait on buying cans of formula if you are formula feeding to see what your baby tolerates. I would get a couple of bottles but not too many-your baby may need a different nipple/bottle type than you buy so you don't want to go too crazy. Some baby wash and baby washclothes. A diaper disposal system or cloth diapers. (I use the diaper genie 2 - it is great!!!) A couple of good swaddling sized blankets. A cooler one and a warmer one. Of course a place for him or her to sleep, and some toys. This is the fun part!!! Let us know what you are having! Welcome to the infant care board and third tri board!!! :)

Oh and sleep sacks like DB said-my baby LIVED in them in the beginning-I'm actually very sad that he has grown out of them. The zip up kinds are great-they have gowns too that work well. And little socks if they are only in a onesie. Happy shopping!

Kara H. - April 18th, 2007 1:18 PM

If you are going to have a summer baby, I would mostly buy onesies, socks, and recieving blankets. We were told we were going to have a huge baby...then he showed up 6wks early. Not so huge then, LOL! I would buy a fair amount of gerber zip up sleepers (zippers are much easier than snaps at 3am) in the 3-6 month range since the seem to stay in that size the longest and will start getting cool in the evenings in sept for most of the country...

Kara H. - April 18th, 2007 1:21 PM

Oh I also started buying a package of diapers a week at the grocery store from about 24 wks on. I bought one or two in the newborn size, but most of them in size 1. If you are a first time mom, you will be shocked how quickly you go thru a pack of diapers. It seemed like I would blink and the pack would be empty. It was so nice just to go to the closet and pull down one that I had purchased early when I had forgot to have hubby pick some up on the way home from work...

If you are going to announce the sex of the baby I wouldn't buy much in the way of clothes. People love to give clothes. We kept the sex a secret so people gave useful things and then ended up giving an outfit after DD was born. My favorite thing for the newborn was a Swaddle Designs blanket. They cost around $30 but they are worth it. Big so you can continue to swaddle for awhile and they work well. We used it for 3 1/2 months and had a back up for messes. Wipes - we use Target brand and I buy the large bulk box. The boppy pillow for me was a necessity b/c of breastfeeding. A sound machine was a must to get DD to sleep well and drown out other noises. I got only a few boxes of bottles b/c you never know which brand the baby will take. Plus w/ a commitment to breastfeeding I didn't even want bottles or formula in the house to temp me on a bad day/night. A lot of people are mentioning socks but good luck to you if you can find socks that will stay on a newborn. We were constantly rounding up those tiny things from falling off all over the house. One last thing - the vibrating seat that sits on a table or the floor. LOVED it. Good luck and enjoy pregnancy.

CyndiG - April 18th, 2007 1:47 PM

I've had 2 summer babies now, and the only thing you need is onesies and sleepers, and lot's of diapers and wipes! And, my most important possession was my Snugli! I don't know what I would have done without it!! Congrats!!!! Come back and let us know what it's going to be!! :O}

aurorabunny - April 18th, 2007 1:56 PM

Oh I just have to add that Jennifer123 is SOOOO right. That is people's favorite thing to give is cute little outfits. We registered for so many useful things for our baby shower and while we actually got some of them as gifts we mostly just got little cutesy outfits that we didn't register for, LOL Oh well!

Kara H. - April 18th, 2007 1:59 PM

Yep. A good snuggli is a life saver. Just remember, you get what you pay for. A good one will cost you at least $30-$50, but its worth its weight in gold. A cheaper one may hurt your shoulders and slide off your shoulders.

DDT - April 18th, 2007 2:01 PM

As for bottles...I knew I would be formula feeding at 6 weeks...I bought 4 4oz bottles and 4 8oz bottles. I use Avent brand. Later on I also bought 1 4oz Dr Brown bottle and then just recently another 3 8oz bottles. He seems to also like the nipple on this brand. As for diapers I got given SO many. I ended up using about 3 packages of newborn. And then about 4 packages of no 1 size. I ended up trading in about 4 packages of no 1 size because I needed use them. As for clothes - also got given tons - I bought about 6-7 newborn outfits (ds weighed 7lbs4oz at birth), and then I had TONS of 0-3 size given to me. I probably have about 15-20 outfits which is excessive. I probably could get by with about 10 outfits. The 3-6 size I also have a TON of ...probably more than the 0-3 but that is because about 80% were given to me...I think about 10 also would be fine. But baby clothes are just too cute...everyone just can't resist buying them. I love the swing he got...its for 3 stages so he will use it more as he gets older. We bought a vibrator chair which was a waste of money. He only liked it for about a week and now he is getting too big for it. I love my bottle warmer and diaper disposal bin. He loves his playmat but you only need that when they turn 1-2 months old.

eclipse - April 18th, 2007 5:24 PM

For big items, make sure you check consumer reports-for carseats, strollers, swings/rockers, etc. It is worth it to make sure you are getting the safest stuff for your baby. And I agree with the others-people love to give you clothes, but you may have to specify if you register bigger sizes sometimes...I spread mine out and it saved me since Liam was so large at birth.

hthab - April 18th, 2007 5:48 PM

The most used item for me for the first 9 weeks was the Miracle Blanket for swaddling. I can't say enough good things about it. Check out the reviews on Amazon.

mamagoose - April 18th, 2007 6:01 PM

Breast pump is a must, if you're breastfeeding, and a huge stash of nursing pads and Lansinoh. I use disposable nursing pads because the cotton ones get soaked through an hour after I put them on. Don't buy any clothes until after all your baby showers, you'll probably get more than enough. I absolutely could not have survived this long without ds's vibrating bouncy chair, its like baby-zen... but, I see DDT's ds hated his, so its so hard to guess what your baby will like. My ds hated his swing until very recently. I agree with DB- I bought a bunch of waterproof change pads to stick on top of the change table, because especially with little boys, they can pee in any and every direction, usually right as soon as you get their diaper off!
