My son is almost 5 months old. He is very alert, eats well, sleeps well, plays with his toys and is very interested in his surroundings. He also smiles and laughs and all that, but I'm wondering when he will respond to his name. And sometimes I can say his name over and over and make my voice louder and he will only look up and focus on me IF he feels like it. At other times, if he's interested in socializing, he'll smile at me but it's always only on his terms. I'm just wondering if this is normal at this stage. I can talk very loud and he'll still only look at me if he wants to only. (His hearing is fine).

Hi my ds is almost 6 months and doesn't always look at me when I say his name. We go to the pedi next week so I'll ask but I think it's normal.

Yep, it's normal...babies are very self-involved...there's so much new stuff to learn, just within their little persons. As long as he reacts to sound, he's normal. :)

Sounds very normal to me. I can't quite remember when Mattea started really responding to her name maybe 6 mths? She's now 9 mths and still only responds on her own terms. Just like Jamie said they are very self involved.

I think I read that they dont really comprehend their name until a little later. I dont think my daughter has a clue that her name is Isabella, but I am sure we dont help matters by calling her Izzy, Belle, Bella, LJ (little Jeff after my husband), bug, dinker, and a whole host of other names-lol. Its true they are so self absorbed, my dd is only interested in what she wants to be when she wants to be.

I think they know their names, but they don't respond how WE would respond as older humans when our names are said. For example, I don't say the word "milk" anymore than I say my son's name, but I've noticed that lately when I say "milk" while he's hungry & crying, he gets quieter & looks at me expectantly. ("Milk" means I'm about to nurse him.)

Btw, he's a week from four months old.

My 6 mo son won't react much to his OWN name... however he will turn his head at speedlight when my dad calls him by the nickname he gave my LO, grrrrrrrr.

my lo just turned 7months and he is just getting to responding to his name he did the same thing and sometimes now it is only when HE WANTS TO ha ha lol me and dh think it is so funny how he can choose to look at everything but you when your really trying to get him to look!! ha ha lol
