I am not sure how we got her to do it, but my dd did it at 9 mos.....we just kept putting it in her mouth and she got it after about the third time.....she started by blowing in it and once after that she sucked in and got some and I think the light went on after that.... |

Ds took to the straw really easy at around 7 months, he was a boobie baby that never had a bottle it was harder for to him grasp a sippy thn the straw. |

I gave dd a Nuby sippy cup with a silicone straw at 10-11 months, and she took to it right away. Sorry, I am NO help! LOL |

ds is 7.5 months and doesn't like his sippy, he doesn't seem to grasp the tilting it up to get the liquid concept and gets frustrated, so I got him the Nuby one with a straw and it works great. It took him a few tries before he realized he had to suck a few times to get the liquid. He would suck once and get frustrated thinking there was nothing in there. I'm guessing with a straw she would have to suck a few times before getting anything, so maybe she is giving up after a couple tries when nothing comes? Maybe try one of the sippies with a built in straw first, that way the liquid has a shorter distance to travel and is easier to use, that way she can get used to the concept? |

My son was about 5-6 months old. We stuck a straw in his mouth at a resterant , not really thinking he would know what to do, but he took right to it. |

The straw thing is so unique to each kid. Either they get it or they don't. My daughter couldn't figure out how to suck thru a straw until she was 2, but my son figured it out at about 7 months old. |

Funny you should mention this. I was just talking with our daycare provider about this same topic. She has 30+ yrs of experience which is a lot! She said that you have to start them early (like 6 to 10 months) while they still have a sucking instinct. Otherwise they usually don't do it until they are two years old. |

Hi ashtynsmom....maybe try a juice box. You know the ones with the little straw.......you can squeeze the box and get the juice up to the top and it will not require her to suck much and that might help her get the idea.....gl |

IM about the same as LisaB. Ds took the straw at 7 months, and it was probably easy for him becuase he had some delicious apple juice in it that he really wanted...lol...so try putting something really yummy in her cup and after the first sip she'll realize that she wants more and take another sip and another..I know that is easier said than done but just try it! |

We hav tried the sipy's with the straw and we have tried jsut a cup with a straw ( like McDonald's) but she just won't suck. She tips the sippy up and gets mad when it won't come out. WIth the straw in the cup, she chews on it and tried to dump it up, too..... I think she is just so used to the reg. sippy. I will keep trying. Thanks for everyones help. |
