My 14 month old baby girl is suffering from a cold that began this morning. I have heard about the warnings about Vicks vapor rub. I have never been a big user before. My question is if is it okay to use the Vicks humidifier for my baby. The nursery room is kept open to let fresh air in.

You can use the humidifier itself, but NOT the vicks additive. Any product that produces the vapors is dangerous.

Really..? Our doctor told us to put a little Vicks on a paper towel, fold it up into a little packet, and put it in the foot of GRIM's footie pajamas to help with her dry cough and sneezes. I may need to get a new doc.

This is a new finding. They just put out the warning a few days ago.

OH man.. Okay, keeping doctor, calling the clinic tomorrow to let them know why I won't be using their advice!

Why is it dangerous to use some in the humidifier? I've been using it for 2 weeks in my 13 month old son's room and have had no problems...? What does it do?

I just read that you shouldn't put it on kids under two and especially NOT under the nose because it can actually cause more inflammation and mucous production which can be a pretty severe reaction in young babies....but I had just used it on my kids a few weeks ago and the pharmacist said it was ok. I would say check with a doctor - if they pull it off the shelves you certainly don't want to use it. Unless there is a different study - I am not sure that using it on the feet would be a bad thing .

Okay, so I got ahold of an answer from GRIM's Advice Nurse. She said what the doctor should have made clear was I should use Vick's BABY Rub, not VAPO Rub. A very big difference. Baby Rub (I tried it on myself) is very weak and mostly cream.

oh good - I didn't want to find out that it did some horrible damage to them down the road. I don't feel bad now knowing that we're all good. :) Oh,the pharmacist said you can use regular Vics but that it can irritate some babies skin so that's why they have the baby vics. I just used regular on mine - they didn't seem to care.
