When To Stop Breastfeeding

I saw that show, it was 20/20 and it was on extreme mothering. There was a 7 year old boy that also was still being breastfed. Now this is only my opinion and I hope to in no way offend anyone, but I think when your kid can run in and pull up your shirt that they are too old to be breastfeeding. My ds is almost 8 months and I still breastfeed him, and plan to until he is 12 months. I just found out I'm pregnant though so hopefully I'll be able to breastfeed him that long. But I know my fiance's stepmother breastfed her kids until they were 3, and it got a little wierd. Her one son would run in from playing in the backyard and pull her shirt up whether there was other people there or not. It made us extremely uncomfortable and we actually avoided going over there because of it. But to each their own and if someone wants to breastfeed their 8 year old, then hey go for it, but it's just not for me. |

Wow, 8 years sounds crazy to me .... I can't even believe your body would still be producing milk after 8 years. Anyway, if your just looking to see what other moms are planning on doing or have done - I BF my son (who's now 3) until 11 months as I had to back to work when he was 12 months. When he was 10 months I got to a point where I just kind of just wanted my body back & wanted the freedom to have a few drinks, & lose the extra baby weight (I run allot), & I didn't want the weight loss & running to compromise the quality of my milk. I gave him formula for 1 month & when he turned one I just gave him regular cows milk. I now have a 6 month old daughter who is also BF & I plan on weaning her also around 10 or 11 months ... I live in Canada & we have 1 year mat leave, so I want to have her fully weaned for when I go back to work because I don't want any problems with her when she has to start daycare... it will be easier for them to feed her a bottle or sippy cup. But that's my reason & my opinion, everyone has different reasons for stopping to BF at different times & you just do what works best for you & your baby. |

Most babies usually wean themselves off before the age of 4. Even at two years old, most babies only nurse once, maybe two times a day. Milk really doesn' t become that important in the diet once they eat adult food. In other countries its not uncommon to nurse until 4 years old, but in the US there is a stigma attached. |

gummi, my guess would be pumping milk,Honestly why else would we produce milk if it wasn't supposed to be for us? sometimes i ask myself why would we be meant to drink cows milk in the first place? but yeah i realize 8 does sound too old coonsidering how society is and it IS a lot of work. My dd is almost 14 months and i am still breastfeeding. i hope to go to 2 years, i'm not sure how i will feel at that point... i figure we will see, but i think 3 would be my cut off. Do whatever feels right for you. Sometimes both of you will just know when you want to move on they say. |

Jenna I wonder that too about the cows milk - I am going to BF my daughter until she is 12 months hopefully but that is my limit. I was happy to do it that far along cause of work and all but at a year instead of putting her on cows milk I may look into soy milk or something. The part of that video that made me laugh a little was when the older daughter was saying it was better then melons.. that was pretty funny to me. But I think if people can manage to do it that long then that is great for them |

My daughter is 10 months old and nursing still and I am pregnant right now. I plan on nursing her as long as she wants to up until age 3. At 3 I think I'll stop, I think that's a little too old personally. But I think it depends on a person and the child. |

sprinkles, i looked into the whole soy milk thing but as far as i could tell all the soy milks were "low fat", please let me know if you find one that you are allowed to give a lo. Sarah good luck nursing while you are pregnant, i heard that being pregnant can cause your milk supply to drop. Could you nurse both your little ones i wonder? i figured they say that your milk is made by your body just for your baby( and their age), i wonder if it would work if you have 2 babies nursing to. |

Jenna, I'm pregnant too and still nursing my 8 month old. My milk still seems to be there, but I don't feel a let down anymore. My son seems to be satisfied with the amount that he is getting but I wonder if it has decreased and that's why I don't feel it anymore. I also read that when you get to be about 20 weeks pregnant that your milk will turn to colostrum, and most lo's will self wean at that time. I will continue to bf my son up until 12 months as long as he wants to. When he turns one, I will be turning 20 weeks pregnant. |

What I always wondered about with breastfeeding while pregnant, doesn't that mess up the hormone balance needed to sustain the pregnancy? I would imagine it would be ok, but during my m/c's I read that high prolactin is often a cause of loss and that prolactin is high when bf'ing. Also I thought bf'ing decreases progesterone. Not sure on that though, but progesterone is vital to a pregnancy. Did your doctor ok bf'ing while pregnant that long? |

Yes, my doc told me to bf as long as I'd like. He even told me that if I wanted to continue past the 20 week mark that would be ok too. I just choose to stop bfing my son at 12 months and it just so happens that he turns 12 months within days of the pregnancy turning 20 weeks. I don't really know about the increased hormone levels. The only thing I know is that nipple stimulation can bring on labor, but I think that would only happen if your body was ready to go anyway. |

Breastfeeding isn't harmful to a pregnancy, but pregnancy can be harmful to breastfeeding. During pregnancy, many women lose their milk supply but not always. And once the baby is born, some women do what is called tandem nursing (aka nursing both of them). Usually how it works is one baby gets one side, the other gets the other side. |

I realize that each baby would get a boob but say you had a 18 month old and then a new born. They say that your milk is supposed to specificaly be made to suit your babys needs for their age. How would you know which breast to put which on? or maybe they mix Maybe it's all just breastmilk and it makes some kind of perfect consistency for both. Either way all the power to you, breastfeeding is a lot of work. Probably why breastfeeding stops a womans ovulation cycle( in most cases),to space the pregnancys. But it is nice to have them close in age. |

The change is pretty much how much is produced (based on how much baby consumes, so one side can produce more than the other if you tandem nurse in that manner) and consistency. More fat in it during winter and less during summer. |

makes sense, your body must recognize witch babys witch. in toddlerhood it's suppossed to carry more things for immunity to,itleast thats what everyone tells me why they breastfeed so long. |

My ds was born when my dd was 15 months. I bf my dd until 12.5 months just after I turned 20 weeks pregnant, she self-weaned. I wouldn't have told her no and probably would have kept going with her til 2 years. My ds is now 4 months and just had his first formula bottle today, I'm re-enlisting in the military. My dd will actually try to hold my boob and feed him, so funny! If I could afford to stay home with them I'd try to keep going with him til 2 years if he wanted. He's definately a boobman, he actually stares and drools, haha! |
