my 3 month old ds has bad acid reflux (the "silent reflux" since he does not actually vomit, but swallows it back down). the dr. thinks it was triggered by his milk and soy allergy. he was put on alimentum and he is now on prevacid 1x a day and mylanta before every feeding. he's been on prevacid for almost a week and is now taking about 25-30oz formula a day, where as for the past 6 weeks he has only been taking 15-18oz a day. feeding can be a nightmare, we are hoping this new medication is going to continue to help him. he was on axid before and it seemed to help for a couple weeks and then his pain started up again and not wanting to eat. he's been the same weight for 6 weeks so we also need him to gain weight. my ds still has pain and screams and cries for about 30min-1 hour once or twice a day and you can tell he is having pain. the dr. thinks his esophagus is inflamed. we are making an appt with a pediatric GI this week. anyone else have a baby with severe acid reflux, what is your lo taking and do you have any suggestions, etc? thank you...

Hi madison- I'm sorry to hear your lo is in so much pain. I wonder if the Alimentum is still a problem since although it is "predigested" meaning the proteins are broken down it is still a milk-based formula. My dd had reflux but not nearly as bad as your lo. I hope he imrpoves and feels better soon.

My ds has reflux and is also 3 months. Though he was just diagnosed. He is fighting taking any medicine, he's breastfed. His isn't severe but we do have 1-2 screaming fits after a feed a day. I think I remember reading some add a little rice cereal to a bottle to help thicken things up a bit and keep the acids down? Ours usually flares in the evening so I think I'll ask the pedi about trying that in a bottle then. Through the day I keep him upright after a feed for at least an hour, by holding or setting him in his carseat or bouncer. Our nights seem to be getting a little better now, tho last night was horrible. He woke up and just started screaming a few times. I'm willing to bet anything he just started teething too : (. He has a white bump (just like my dd had a few months before her teeth came) and is chewing like mad on his hands out of the blue, he'll kind of growl and bite down if you let him chew your finger, lol. He throws up a lot after every feed then gets fussy for a bout an hour. I hope your lo starts gaining weight and feeling better.

we had ds's follow-up appt with the pediatrician yesterday and he has gained a little weight, 9 oz in a week, so that's good news for us. he seems to be responding well to the prevacid for now. britt- we did try the rice cereal in a bottle, per the dr.'s request, and did it for a week or so, but it didn't work out so well. the nipples kept getting clogged, we tried tons of different nipple types and 2 different kinds of bottles, and then ds had a horrible cold/cough and when we had to stop in the middle of a feeding to unclog the nipple he would start the coughing and then it turned into choking, etc. so....for us, we decided not to continue doing it for now. it also made him want to eat less, i guess because he was so full, and i didn't want him "skipping" any meals since he wasn't gaining weight. for him, he didn't gain any weight with the rice, but we only tried it for a week or so. well, our pediatrician gave us a referral to see the GI specialist so i'm waiting for their office to call me today to set up our appt.. we'll feel more comfortable talking to a specialist. we have some food allergies in the family and also eosiniphilic esophagitis, as well, so we want to make sure he just has bad reflux. britt- has your ds lost any weight? hope he is doing better soon! clindhom, i was wondering hte same thing about the alimentum since he still seems to be having "allergies"- around his eyes are so red and his skin gets rashy off and on. she thinks it may just be seasonal allergies for that, and that he is doing well on the alimentum- but i am going to bring this up with the GI specialist.

Madison - Its good to hear your little one gained weight. My dd was small and always 5% or less for weight, and now my ds is huge and 90% for weight if he were born term. Both were born a little early, and Jaidyn (preemie) seems to be the one with issues, first blood sugar, then jaundice and now mild reflux. He hasn't stopped gaining weight and still it seems like half or more comes back up. I think I'll give the cereal a shot for a week in the evenings and see where we are. I've read bad things about it tho. I hope you get your little one's problem figured out soon.

My daughter I believe has reflux (undiagnosed) and milk allergy. She was put on alimentum around 5 weeks old and that made a big difference. She would scream the entire day before that. Up until about a week ago she would fight every other bottle, refusing to eat half the time. For some reason just about a week ago she started eating much better. She just turned 12 weeks, so maybe her issues are resolving themselves? So far she hadn't gained enough weight though and feedings were a nightmare. Britt, I"m glad you're still nursing, good for you. I think my dd is teething as well, she can't seem to jam her fist in her mouth far enough these days!!

Sure enough I wrote that, and things went all down hill. DD started to refuse to eat altogether and started puking as well and not sleeping, so it seems reflux has got worse. She is on prevacid, today is day 3 for that and I"m really hoping she will start eating better. I have to feed her when asleep or she won't eat at all. I feel as if I"m going to lose it, all I do is figure out how to feed her next, and I have two older children who are getting ignored all the time. HOw is everyone else doing with their reflux babies? Any better Madison? OH also DD hasn't gained any weight in weeks.

I don't know if this will help with the acid reflux, but my Houdini (now 13) had a really rough time of things as an infant and one of his problems was with allergies. We tried him on typical formula when I suddenly dried up. He did fine for all of a couple days, then he'd get horribly sick or constipated and colic became a nearly hourly thing for us. His doctor suggested soy formula, so we tried that. Again, he was fine for a little while, then he'd fall into cycles of sick, constipated, and colic. We had no idea what to do at that point, but my doctor said to try giving him a little bit of Rice Dream - a nondairy, nonsoy milk/calcium/vitamin replacement. The change was immediate, dramatic, and long term. We gave him original rather than vanilla or chocolate, of course, but he was keeping it down and eating ravenously. The sick, constipation, and colic all faded. This time, everything was wonderful for months, but he was still gaining weight at a slower pace than he should have. A friend told us about something called Almond Breeze, we talked to the doctor, got the okay, and tried it out. Even better! Now he was putting on weight at the proper amounts, the stomach upsets were ALL gone and no more colic! He STILL loves Almond Breeze (and so do I, the chocolate tastes better than YooHoo and without all the additives!) though he's now able to drink cow milk in portioned daily amounts.
