Hi, I'm just wanting to see what kind of feeding schedules those of you who are breastfeeding and giving solids doing? I just started my 6 month old dd on solids and she's not taking much right now so it is mainly for the learning part of it (to eat with spoon, etc.) then i just continue to demand bf the rest of the day so I am wanting to know how those who bf do it. I read the post on here about formula and solid feeding and that seems easier b/c you can measure the formula whereas for me I have no idea how much my dd is getting. When I give her a bottle of breastmilk if we are out and about it is 4 oz...she doesn't seem to care to take more than that, so 8 oz sounds like a crazy lot of liquid to me. Do formula fed babies take more liquid in than bf ones? I'm so confused and starting to wonder if my dd is getting enough. I make her baby food and froze it in ice cube trays. She just started with peas and I thaw one cube and do that at about 9am...she doesn't eat half of it so far. Then at lunch I do oatmeal mixed with breastmilk and she only takes like 1/2 TBSP, so not much solids at all although we only started solids 2 weeks ago. Any info is appreciated, thanks :)

It's normal...she is just starting solids and getting used to this entirely new experience. I started my ds2 on solids when he was about 5 months old and only recently (7.5 months) has he started consuming about 2-2.5 cubes per meal. I also make baby food, but he is not BF. He drinks about 24oz formula a day. He gets 3 meals...and only added his 3rd meal about a week ago.

Hey Stef, you probably read what I posted. Nathan eats a lot for a baby his age. I am sure that 4 ounces is plenty for her right now. All babies are different and eat different amounts at different ages. To give you and idea, Nate is 20 pounds 11.2 ounces and 28 and 1/4 inches long- he's a big boy. Talk to fefer, she is giving solids now too.

Hi there, your daughters feeding habbits are pretty much exactly like mine, my daughter is 6.5 months old & is also breasfed with a bottle of pumped milk once or twice a day so my hubby can feed her. She will usually only drink 3 or 4 oz at a time, & had never wanted more then 4 ever ... so I think that's pretty normal, every baby is different. She's also 16 pounds & very healthy, I nurse her on demand - about 6 or 8 times a day, & give her 1 tbsp fruit with 2 tbsp cereal in the morning around 9.30ish, & then in the evening around 7.00 she had 1 or 2 tbsp veggies with 1 or 2 tbsp cereal... & about half the cereal ends up on her face & bib, but it seems like enough for her right now. Sometimes she wants more then I have prepared , & sometimes only one or 2 bites, I pretty much just give her as much or as little as she wants & go from there. If you go to Heinz's website they give you a good guide as to how much the average baby eats & drinks based on their age.

Ah, I feel much better :) Whitney, sounds like our situations are pretty much the same! My daughter doesn't take quite that much yet, but close. She's taking more cereal each day and can easily do 1 Tbsp now. The veggies are another story b/c she doesn't seem fond of the homemade peas or grean beans. I've found they don't process well, so I'll probably go buy jars of that stuff and then make my own of the rest (other veggies and fruit). Once she gets more of these foods under her belt I can offer more stuff each day. I think I may try the morning and evening feedings b/c I was doing morning and lunch, yet she never seems to want anything at lunchtime.

it is a tough routine to get into but doable. it gets easier once they start eating more solids and less breastmilk. you could put it in a sippy with their lunch and just pump when you get the time.
omg i am glad you are in the same boat as i used to be!! i think formula fed babies do drink more, for some reason. my dd would only drink about 4 oz of breastmilk as well!! i always found it funny but didn't stress a ton about it since she was still in the 90th percentile according to her pediatrician. i'm not sure how much she drinks now, i very rarely give her a sippy or bottle of pumped milk, unless i have some that i don't feel is enough to freeze or something.

Use your blender on liquify, and the texture comes out smoother. Babies also love sweet potatoes. Bake them for an hour and 20 minutes at 375 degrees, cut them in quarters, remove the skins and put in the blender with some water.

Cool! Will do.. I am getting some carrots, squash and sweet potatoes today. I'm so tired of green beans and peas :) I ended up buying the organic gerber brand for those as it's just easier. My food processor doesn't have a liquify setting. It's a new one, but small (like 2 or 3 cups is as much as it makes and it just has different blades and then a fast and slow button.
