Hi all, My son is 8 months old and it took 3 months to get him to breast feed well. I have been breastfeeding him since and I love it. I was told by my nurse that as long as he is gaining weight all he needs is breast milk. I introduced cereal around 6 months and he really chubbed up. My husband is very overweight and I am still fighting with my preg weight. I don't want to overfeed my son so I haven't bothered with baby foods. However I'd like to start to feed him table foods and have no clue how or when to slip in a meal. Does it mean that I cut down on breast feeding or do I just add to it. How much do I give him? I don't want to dry up because I'd like to breastfeed for another few months if possible. He is doing really well with the breastfeeding and cerel but I want to get him used to new tastes before he's too old and becomes a picky eater. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks so much

Hi mama J, if you feed him cereal for dinner the try switching it for some fruit and do cereal for breakfast. try to do it after he gets up from his morning nap or after an hour and a half after you nursed. Your body will adjust. I still nurse dd who is 8 months old but she is on 3 meals a day plus snacks and is a good size for her age. Don't worry about his weight, once he becomes active it will go away faster then you can keep up with feeding him. He is going to need more calories also so that is another reason to get him started on solids. He will let you know when he has had enough to eat so no worries about over feeding him. Jusr follow his cues and you will be fine. Hope this helps.

I had the same fear- I myself have struggled with weight for some time now, and I felt that how could I be giving my daughter the same amount of formula and then add food? It seemed like too much...and I didnt want her to have a weight problem. What alot of parents seem to do, and what I did for some time, is feed their babies solids right in the middle of feedings. That way the baby wont be stuffed from the milk, and will not be so hungary that they are not willing to try something new. With anything new you introduce, the baby has to be in a good mood- not hungary, teething, tired...anything, or he's not going to cooperate. As far as the amount, he'll let you know when he doesnt want anymore...Most foods are going to take a couple of tries to get used to but make sure to introduce them one at a time and feed him only that for 3 days or so..that way you know if he has any allergies to it. They say not to start with fruits because then they get used to the sweetness and won't be as willing to eat something more bitter...like their veggies. I started with a vegatable and then alternated between that and a fruit every three days or so. It worked well for my daughter...But just keep in mind, he's probaly going to spit out the food the first few times..its a brand new taste and it'll take some getting used to.

Thanks so much for your advice. He was gaining well with just the breast milk and really chunked up with the cereal so I couldn't figure out how to feed him two extra meals on top of that but I will try the cereal in the am and give him a veggie tonight and see how that works. Thanks again for the support!
