Though this may seem like a silly question .......really what is the differance. Why can under one year old's have this and cheese but not cow's milk?

I think it has something to do with the processing.

I have no idea what cottage cheese is as I've never had the desire to try it but I do know the answer to the milk before age 1 question. My friend and I had the same question so we asked our Dr. office and what we were told is that children under 1 can have cow's milk (unless there is a known allergy in the family to be concerned about). The reason they say to wait unil age 1 is so parents don't switch from formula to cow's milk any earlier than age 1. The baby needs the nutrition from the formula until age 1.

My doctor said the same thing. It really is fine to have cow milk product, but not ok to substitute cow milk for formula/breast milk since there isn't enough protein/vitamin/fat content to support a baby under the age of one.

Thank you so much ladies!!!! I was afraid it was a silly question but one I needed answered nevertheless. Let me ask one more thing.....I have noticed that there is a formula for over one year olds......do you know why you would continue to buy formula if lo can drink milk....I was thinking it had to do with the nutrition value???? Thank you so much for helping me ladies...

If it has to do with nutritional value would cows milk and giving a multivitamin do about the same thing......???

It does have to do with processing. The enzymes in cheese are different than the enzymes in milk and are supposedly easier to digest for little ones.

While the processing is part of it…..mostly it is due to the fact that cows milk does not contain enough of the right kind of nutrients that baby needs. Breastmilk and formula (even cow milk based formaulas) have. Cows milk and a multivitiam are not the same….babies need breastmilk or formula until age one….(altough I quit bf my oldest at 11 mos and instead of using formula for one month, we went staright to whole milk) Babies can have milk products but watch carfully for allergies….at least that is what my doc told us

From what I can gather it is the amount of milk that is used. Cow's milk isn't suitable to drink, but we were told at weaning class yesterday we can use cows milk to smush up baby food. I was also told that cow's milk has too much of something which an under 1 can't handle in the large quantity a drink would give, I think it was sodium oddly enough, but I can't remember
