Weaning Issues...

ahhh -weaning is so hard! Maybe start with ONE feeding at a time? I'd get rid of the 4am one. Can you give her a bottle to get back to sleep? Maybe even with just water in it??? You'll probably just have to have a couple of crappy nights with the 4am thing but if you want to cut it out you'll probably have to go cold turkey. My dd was the same way with some of her feedings/wakings and it was really difficult to break the habit - but we did it and nothing really took that long. I am TRYING to wean my 11 month old - but he refuses bottles. I found a sippy cup without a stopper in it works pretty good. he likes how easy the liquid comes out - and until he gets better at drinking it, I'm going to leave the stopper out and hope this works. Just a few weeks ago I thought for sure I was NEVER going to break his booby habits but guess what, I'm down to 3 feedings - breakfast, lunch and dinner! MOST days. He's teething/sick now and a little more clingy, but for the most part, he suddenly just got on the program. Don't give up, it WILL end eventually. :) |

fefer, so you are just bf'ing at breakfast lunch and dinner now? I am able to get Ava to take a bottle but she doesn't like it especially when I give it to her. I have to coax her a lot. I gave her one after breakfast this morning and my plan is to do lunch and dinner the same, but I don't know if she'll go all day without nursing. We'll see. Then I'll nurse her before bed. She finally fell asleep for her nap without nursing so that was a plus. I'm going to cold turkey tonight on the 4am feed. Last night it was at 2am and she FREAKED when I tried to just rock her. Then I tried a juice bottle and she was arching her back, pushing it away and screaming. I was nearly in tears so I pulled the boob out and she instantly stopped, started sucking furiously and then fell asleep. I felt so defeated :( I don't want her to learn that screaming gets her way you know??? I started worrying "maybe she IS hungry?" so today I'm trying to make sure she eats plenty solids AND bm/formula along with snacks. If I know how much she is taking in I'll feel more confident letting her cry tonight when she wakes that one time. I am so worried that I'm pushing this too soon but I really want it to be done and her weaned before we move when she is 12.5 months old. I don't want to do it later in a totally new environment if that makes sense. Do you think it is ok to jump to cutting out all the day nursings like I'm trying to do right now? I think the thing I really want to happen is for her to be able to fall asleep without nursing. She's really using it as comfort now and I am afraid I don't make as much milk as she needs so she's not getting enough breastmilk anyways. |

Hey Stephkay!! I found a sippy cup with a really soft silicone spout that doesnt have a valve or anything in it that she will take and I have started giving her formula in that, and she seems to liek it. At first I cut out two daytime feedings and then slowly cut out another. We are now down to only one feeding in 24 hours when she wakes at 2am I nurse her back to sleep. I am sure she would take a bottle, but in all truths I am not ready to fully quit bf yet! I really loved it and already miss it, but I am looking forward to getting my bbs back to a normal size!! heehee!! :) Best of luck, Iknow exactly what you are going through! |

Update! Well, I guess there is some truth to a little pain for a little gain...that day I posted last we went on and did bottles at breakfast lunch and dinner and then that night I nursed her to sleep and then she woke as usual but it was earlier like 1:15am. We lether cry and I was in tears holding my head b/c she screamed for 30 minutes straight! I about lost it and right before I let her dad go and get her she stopped. Poor baby...when I went in in the morning she was sleeping soundly up in the corner of her crib nearest the door like she'd been trying to get to it :( BUT, the next night she only cried for less than a minute and for the past couple of nights none at all! No waking and nursing in the night!!!!! I have also been doing a b/f when she wakes and before bed and all bottles in the day and she's doing fine. PLUS, at least for now she is not having constipation or the crying poops that I have posted on so much! YAY! I really wonder if she was not getting enough milk from me all along. Hmmmmmm. Well, I hope this stays going so well. I may try moving from bottle to sippy around 12 months but for now I'm just happy to get her from the boob to the bottle, lol :) |
