My dd is 7 months olds and I was wondering when u can give them water to drink. She plays alot and sometimes I think she could be a bit thirsty.

I started offering a little water in a sippy cup when ds2 was 7 months old. This is when I started giving him his sippy cup of water at every meal. It wasn't until he was 8 months old that he started drinking significant amounts of water out of it though. Now at 9 months old he drinks about 2-3oz of water a day. I do know that too much water can be a bad thing (affecting sodium levels) so maybe limit water intake to 4oz a day.

i think it's around 6 months old that you should.Unless your baby in constipated, maybe a little sooner to help it along in that case.

Water or juice is NOT recommended for any baby under 12 months old. If you think your baby is thirsty, the American Academy of Pediatrics says you need to give formula or breastmilk ONLY. Giving babies water can cause a babys potassium levels to become toxic and it can be fatal. Every baby is different and there is no recommeded measure of water for any child under a year. It is just not safe, nor is it necessary.

My Pedi said it is ok to give a baby water at 6 months old. I guess every pedi is different. I would ask your pedi about it. Just give them a quick call. They will be able to tell you. I personally have given my baby water from the time she was 6 months old. She is perfectly fine. I also give her juice diluted with water. She still nurses 6 times plus a day. But she also just wants something to wet her whistle. She is healthy and thriving. Just go by what you pediatrician tells you.

I gave water to my daughter at 4 1/2 months when I started her on solids, my son just started solids he's 5 1/2 months and of course I offer a sippy of water as well. If you use common sense and don't give them more than a few sips, so their formula/breastmilk intake is not effected there is no reason for concern. I homemake my babyfood and don't add water, I mush and feed. So the sip or two of water could have been added to the food anyways.

Thanx for all your advice ladies. I have given her a sip of water here and there to practice using a sippy cup. But I think I will hold off giving it to her as a drink for a while.
