My son is 15 months and we just started this week, what a mess sometimes! I was just curious when any of you started just giving them food and letting them spoon and feed themselves? Yogurt went good today, applesauce was a little messy!!

Well, I havent really started yet and my son is 13 months but every oncein awhile I will put the spoon in nathans hands and it goes right to the mouth. He tries to switch hands though and gets it all over himself. So I only let him when we are going to have a bath next. I have also only done cereal because it sticks to the spoon.

my dd is 15 months and she gave me no choice, she started grabbing for the spoon a couple wks ago, so now she gets a spoon and I get a spoon, the past few days she has been sticking it in her mouth but usually whatever food is sticking to it falls off!

I didn't really have a choice either.. Tristan wasn't even a year old when he was grabbing at the spoon. I think the kid has a spoon fetish or something! Now he spoons very well but also uses his fingers. I'd say that 15 months is a good age to start at but yes it will be messy! But, hey that's how kids learn!

My dds are 9 months now and have been grabbing at it for a while now. I plan on just stripping them down and letting them go at it. They may not learn for a while but they are never too young to try.

brooke's been holding and "using" a spoon since about 10 months, she is about 14.5 months now and is just starting to really get how to get stuff on the spoon....I use one and she gets one during meal time and I "help" her eat!

I always just let DD have a spoon; she started trying to use it on her own around maybe...10 months? Key word being "trying"...she's 21 months now and does fairly well with a fork/spoon, though she still on occasion will use her hands to put the food on the utensil and then use the utensil to put the food in her mouth...anyway...it's not something you need to "teach", unless your son has a disability of some kind. Just give him the spoon/fork and food, and let him go out at it. He'll figure it out sooner or later, just from watching you.

My dd uses both a fork and a spoon. She is 16 mos (tomorrow) and is pretty good at it. We started around 11-12 mos, just letting her play with it, and she just sort of figured it out with time.

Charlie is almost 9 months and he been grabbing the spoon for about 2 months. I plan to just let him have it (after all of my floor and furniture is covered in plastic!), I have a feeling he can self feed if i give him a chance, its just such a mess!!

At about a year old I give them their food and and spoon. They start by just holding it...ubt eventually see the family eating and figure it out. I don't know that you can actually teach him as much as you just need to let them experience it and figure it out on their own.

I still mostly feed my ds he is 16 months and I know I should start letting him do it on his own but gosh I don't want the mess lol he can feed him self finger foods just fine and I don't think he would have any problems now it is just me but I think I am gonna start letting him try lol I sure don't want to be feeding a 5yr old lol!!
