I am also 38 weeks and went I went to the dr on Friday he told me that walking was an old wives tale. I was mad because here for the last 3 weeks I have walked myself to death, so after he told me that I stopped. I have been dialated to a 3 and 50% effaced for 3 weeks now. I have had my membranes stripped twice with no luck, I think I am fighting a losing battle. I go back to the dr tommorrow, I sure hope he has a plan of attack, cause I am way past done. Good luck! Let me know if you come up with anything that works.

It's not an old wives tale, it's good exercise and it helps the baby settle into the pelvis. Much better than sitting on the couch doing nothing. I would say whatever works when you are IN labor to help you dilate is going to work before labor to get you ready to go. I walk 2 miles a day at least and I'm a little more dilated every week. It certainly can't hurt!

It's up to baby. He could be ready tomorrow or not for another month. 38 to 42 weeks is a NORMAL pregnancy.
