What does it feel like, and how scary is it really to get? I want one, but have heard some horror stories:/

no, its like a pinch in ur back, but its not bad, compared to the pain u would have been in.

Joanne - December 10th, 2005 2:26 AM

A big pinch or a long stinging painful pinch?? lol :)

Tami - December 10th, 2005 12:51 PM

didn't feel a thing. with me they did a local anesthetic before,l so i felt that pinch and that wasit!

I didn't think it was that painful--I thought the IV hurt worse going in. And mine took effect after 5 minutes--it felt wonderful!

Hi Joanne, i've had my third epidural a week ago. The first two was fine, this last one was a little painful. With the first two Laticain was used to deaden the skin when the needle was inserted, this time it was not. So i think its different for different people. No one can really say. It also has to do with the person who's performing the epidural, as I said i've had 3, with 3 different people performing the procedures, and all 3 experiences were different.

I felt a static like shock and jumped, but it was more a startle response than pain.

C - December 11th, 2005 4:51 PM

Oh, she warned me I might.

another question. - December 13th, 2005 2:44 AM

how soon can you have an epidural? Will it last the entire labour?I do not want to feel the rim of fire, anything to make it easier

My hospital and the doctors won't give one until 4cm. I dilate slowly (even w/pitocin) so that's bad news for me, lol! Mine also stop it in order to push, but I usually still feel some of the epi and only feel pressure (no pain) durning pushing.

I felt the weird shock thing myself. By the time mine was administered; I was in so much pain, I really don't remember much else. Except I felt SOOOOO much better after.

I'm concerned about this as well. I have a crooked back-never been diagnosed with scoliosis though. I hear that it's difficult to set one properly if a person's back bone is crooked. I hope the fact that my vertebre sticks out a little helps the anesthesiologist see what he's doing.

Hi Joanne,
My little boy is a week old now and I had an epidural, it's not that bad it's just the thought of it thats scary, but once you get it you'll feel so much better.

One of my best friends has scoliosis and she just had her second epidural with her second baby...it worked just fine

Compared to contractions??? It's a piece of cake.

shelbi - December 19th, 2005 12:06 PM

mine was extremely painful. however, the guy who administered it had to do it TWICE. i don't think he was very experienced.. and i won't have one again. however, i think it's just like having blood drawn. some people are really good and can do it w/o causing you pain.. and some can't or don't care.

i just had my first baby and epidural on friday 12-16, and the local that they put in first pinched and burned, and then when he put the medicine in, it kind of made my back feel like it cramped up where it went in, the anathsieologist(sp) was really good and explained everything he was doing, he even told me to expect the cramping feeling. all in all, it kind of sucked but it helped the pain almost instantly. i would do it again, because the pros definately out weigh the cons. i also agree with shelbi in that some people care and some people don't, just ask whoever does it to explain what they are doing to you if they don't on their own, and that might make you feel better about it....good luck and god bless!!
