Scraping Of The Membranes

What is the purpose to scraping the membranes? How often does this result in labor? If it did result in labor, how soon after it was done did labor start?

it does help out a little. with my first child my midwife did it and like a few days later i was in labor on my way to the hospital. But no it does not always work.

My doctor scraped my membranes 6 days ago and i still havent gone into labor!
