[Original Post]

Im 24 and still have a great Gram. She is 97 years old, and still goes to bingo. (yes, she Drives) last week i went to see her, i was 38 weeks pregnant. She asked how i felt, and i told her i was so tired and soar, and wanted the baby out. She said to me " Well, i can tell you what may help, but they dont do things as such any more". So she told me to do as follows:
Get some potatoes, cook and mash them up, add 1 tsp sugar, 2 tsp of margerine, and 2 tsp of (regular, not seeded) Cumin. eat about a cups worth, and then have some mandarine oranges, canned or not. Ok so it sounds weird, but Grammy is usually eating weird things from back in the day. She said " keep in mind, it MAY help. Not gauranted!" so i did what Gram told me to do, and 2 hours later, just getting out of a warm bath, i had my first contraction. (mind you i tried every thing else, pineapple, spicy foods, sex, walking, off roading, nipple stimulation, rasp. tea, glass of wine, brown sugar tea, and any thing else i though may have helped.) I thought for sure, she wouldnt come because she wasnt ready, but for me, gram is always right. Dont diss on me if this doesnt work for any of you, im just trying to help and remember, NOTHING is always 100% effective. Pineapple may work for some one and not some other, the same as this remedy. (by the way, the sugar is added to help with the gastly taste, even though it may still taste nasty.) good luck ladies, hope i could have helped any of you, as i am sure you are all getting sick of hearing about the same remedies.

Hem sounds like something i would be interested in trying. What is Cumin?Do you buy it in the grocery store?

NY Mama - February 19th, 2006 8:33 AM

Cumin is a spice that you can find next to the ginger and the cinnamon. You can either get cumin seeds or ground cumin. because it has to be mixed with the potatoes, you have to get the ground cumin. it will some what taste like a weak chilly but have a sweet flavor because of the sugar. but it will definately smell like chilly, although the smell will have you disscouraged, it will not be as bad as it seems. Hope it works for you hunny. Good Luck!

how many potatoes? Did you go into labor and have the baby or did you just start getting contractions? How far along were you, or are you?

Wow! Grandmas are the best! I have a very old recipe for a hair masque from my grandma which makes my hair shiny and healthy, I get so many compliments.
I will try this one also in 2 months, I am not due until end of May.

i just used 2 potatoes, you only need enough for you. The cumin is what gets the labor going, and the potatoes are all natural, so they give the cumin the hint that is needs. i started to have contractions an hour later, and had my son 4 hours after that. i was 37 weeks and 6 days, almost 38 weeks. yeah, Gram's are awsome, they always know what to do.

what are the oranges for??

NY Mama - February 26th, 2006 12:40 AM

Hi ladies, sorry i havent been on in a couple of days, been having back aches and cramps and all that good stuff. You can use any thing i guess, the potatoes are just to lessen the nasty taste. im going to be 39 weeks tomorrow and im going to do what Gram told me, cross fingers. I will for all of you!

mickey87 - February 26th, 2006 11:48 AM

i thought you said it put you in labour???

Ny Mama - February 26th, 2006 7:52 PM

It did, for the first two, having a bit-o-trouble with this little one. gives me the contractions i need, and is helping to soften me up, but so far, she is just stubborn i guess. This will give you contractions, but like i said, what works for one, will not for another. some times the contractions may stop, like they are me. Guess i'm going to have to put more cumin in it, we'll see. Any how, don't give up, if this doesn't work for you, some thing will.
