umm i don't know. lol. i don't think anyone knows. once you get the huge sticky discharge ( your mucus plug) that'd probably be a better sign to go to the hospital. i never really felt contractions so when i was induced with the gel i was like ok,nothings happening here! By the morning i got checked again and apparently i was 5 cm dilated, i felt dumb lol. However i did notice a ton of realllyyy sticky discharge which must have been my mucus plug the night before. i didn't think anything of it because it was my first pregnancy and i didn't know what it looked like. if i'd of had went in i may of had a november baby instead of december :(

The mucus plug is not a sign you are in labor. You will known real contractions when they make you drop to your knees.

Lorettab, Although Braxton Hicks are a lot like Labour- they may even get progressively more constant and closer together. They are usually limited to tightening around your belly. However the main difference between BH and contractions is that eventually BH will subside while contractions will stay with you, getting progressively more painful and eventually you will feel the pain move lower and lower. Some women describe labour as BH mixed with menstrual cramps. But every woman is different, rest assured- you will know when you know! I agree with mary b, that loosing your mucus plug is not necessarily a sign that you are in labour, however the chances that "real" labour is soon on its way, is very likely (with in 48 -72 hours *usually*). You do need to be very cautious not to take baths, sex or anything else that may increase the risk of infection after your plug has been expelled. All I can say is listen and trust your body! Good luck honey!

Well maybe you guys are right but i never really noticed my "contractions" so next time i probably won't know what to do,lol. some women have bloody show to.

Hi,
I had neither the mucous plug or water breaking for mine. It just came out of nowhere. You will know because they will increase with such intensity. They broke my water when I got to the hospital.
How many weeks are you?

Also, my BH felt absolutely, positively NOTHING like labor contractions. I cannot believe they even call them 'practice contractions'. I have a very high threshold for pain and they felt nothing like BH at all! Just a heads up:)

my plug came out and the 7 days later i had another mucus plug that came out and then i went into labour.. so i agree the plug does not mean your in labour at all..
