38 wks dilated to 4 with 50-60% effacment? (checked yesterday at office) Not having steady contractions but can hardly walk due to pelvic pain and pressure? Third baby, the first two are teenagers now. Feel like I should know but could use some help.

I would wait until the contractions are regular. Walk until then (you probably already knew that). The pressure and pain could be because the baby has dropped.

once you hit 4cm they usually wont discharge you from the hospital

Thats very true....4cm is a far step, and it seems to me your having contractions even if their not steady. I would imagine they might start picking up shortly. Give your OBGYN a call and ask them what they think. They may tell you to go get checked out and see if they keep you. Good luck!
