I just found out I have a bicornate uterus and don't know anything about it. All I know is my uterus is heart shaped with two horns (whatever that means). The only definition I could find on it says there is a much higher risk for miscarriage, premature birth and infertility. I'm 8weeks 4days pregnant. They found out about my uterus through ultrasound. Does anyone know anything more about this disorder/abnormality.

I heard that only 2-3 percent of women have this bicornate uterus. It is genetic though my sister and I both have it. I've heard many women deliver full term babies, but there also is a higher chance of the baby becoming breech because there isn't enough room to turn b/c of the odd shape. Some women have to have c-sections done for this reason. Sorry, thats all I know!

Hi love. From my knowledge having a "heart shaped" uterus can make miscarriage higher... I miscarried 2 months before I got pregnant again with my daughter who turned out to go full term, was not breech, and was completely normal and healthy. The only reason I found out I had a heart shaped uterus was because the placenta was stuck and I had to have a D&C to get it all out. That was the only complication I had with her. She's now 3 and I am trying to concieve again. I would talk to your OBGYN and keep up with your appointments, share your worries with him or her to help ease your mind. Congrats and good luck!

I just found out this weekend that I have a bicornate uterus after I had a high level of bleeding. I had no cramping, but the bleeding was quite a lot and I thought I was miscarrying. I had an ultrasound yesterday and everything with the baby is just fine, I'm 7 weeks along right now. They said it is common for woman who have this to bleed, becuase the baby is in one of the "horns" and the other one still is making all of the hormones, but there isn't a baby over there, so it "sheds" like during a period, where there is a lot of bleeding. My OB told me about a slightly higher risk of preterm labor or breech, but at this point seeing that the baby is fine, with a normal heartbeat, she assured me not to worry.

thanks for everyones replies, I am now 13 weeksand finally out of the 1st trimester. I heard the heart beat a few days ago by doppler and the doc said at this point miscarriage is very slim. I haven't learned anymore about my uterus but I'm not so worried anymore now that I'm further along. Thanks again!!

I too have a bicornate uterus. I am 48 yrs. old and have 3 healthy children. I had a miscarriage after my first baby at 10 weeks along. My first pregnancy was fine. My husband and I were missionaries in Papua New Guinea when our first daughter was born in 1980. I ended up with 24 hrs. of labor and a vacumn extractor was used to help try to deliver the baby as I could not deliver. After 3 attempts they had to stop and I went in for an emergency C-section as the babies heart beat was going down. We had a healthy baby girl. I do not know if my complications of not being able to deliver was a result of my uterus's shape or not. I was in a third world country but at the same time I had very good medical care. My miscarriage was when our daughter was about 14 months old. When I had the D&C it was found that I had the Bicornate uterus. Was the miscarriage a result of the uterus? My husband had had hepatitis and we had been told that could affect the sperm. I had not had a regular period after our first baby as I had breast fed. I know this is not true for all women. I was also told that maybe the lining needed shed. Whatever the reason God knew best. After that I had 2 more healthy pegancies and both were delivered C-Section (planned). My babies were very active while carrying them. I was told the uterus can be heart shaped or like a mitten and that it can make it hard to get pregnant. I did not have trouble in that department. I wish you the best and trust that God will bless you with a healthy pregnancy and baby.

Becky, I think it is wonderful that you have been a missionary and what an unbelievable experience that must have been delivering in a different country. I have been told with the bicornate uterus you have a pretty good chance of having a c section b/c the baby can become breech. this may have been teh case for you. I hope I can have a natural delivery but whatever the Lord wants and knows I can handle will be. Good to here from a fellow christian! God bless

I didn't know I had a bicornate uterus till my daughter was born. I had a c-section because she was breech and that's when the doctor's told me. I never had any problems during pregnancy and no problems after delivery. During the last month of pregnancy I did feel as if she would pop out of my throat because I could feel her pushing up and it was hard to breathe because of her upright position. But I'm sure at 9 months no matter what your uncomfortable. Best Of Luck...try not to worry.

I'm 59 yrs old and just found out I have a different shaped uterus, like you.
I had no problem at all during three pregnancy. I had to have MRI to study this one. I'm a bit surprise that it was just discovered, (with all the new technology). I still have a healthy uterus Hope I have helped you. I wish you all the best with with your new healthy baby to be.

Due to my this bicornate uterus,(think of it like a pepper), I had heavy bleeds and clots during pregnancy. My son was breech and I had emergency c section three weeks early.I still really enjoyed the birth and he arrived with no probs. Good luck!

Yes, I also have one and I have had 3 mc in my past. So its very high risk of haveing a mc. Not to scare you bc you can have a heathly baby w. a bi-uterus. It all depends on where the egg is implanted, your doctors should beable to answer this question w. a ultrasound. My doctors say that the chances of a mc are less if the egg implants on the bottom part of your uterus and hopefully in the bigger half of your uterus. You cant really determine rather or not the baby will have enough room bc the uterus does strecth. There is nothing to right now while your pregnant to prevent a mc, but to pray. After this pregnancy there is an option of surgery to remove the wall and make it all one uterus. Chances are also higher for you to have a c-section bc most babies end up being breach, but as long as you have a heathly baby I dont consider that a big deal. After about ur 3rd month if you do start to get cramping your doctors can stitch your cervix to help from having a early birth. All this I know from experience and right now i am goin on 13wks with everything looking great! After knowing you have a bi-uterus its very hard not to stress but just try to keep your hopes up.
God Bless You, hope all goes well!

I don't know but i have bicornate uterus and i have had 2 premature births and i miscarriage and 2 stillborns but you need to say that everything will be fine and get very good ultrasounds done to ensure everything is ok .

pumpkin_22 - October 14th, 2006 4:44 PM

Just 7 weeks ago my baby girl was delivered by c-section 1 day before her estimated due date she was 6lbs 10oz and in a breech position and to mine and the Doctors surprise I had a perfectly heart shaped uterus. I never had any complications during my pregnancy and was never detected on any of my ultrasounds. What is really cool is that my mom had the same exact thing. Don't worry everyting should be fine. The problems my mom and I had were breech babies.

This is a complicated situation. In a normal uterus it looks like an upside down pear. In the embryological development of the uterus it starts as two "horns" so think of the McDonalds arch. As time goes on, normally the center of the arch will move upwards and absorb or disappear. So now you have the sides of the arch, which become the body of the uterus and then you have something that looks like a pear.

Therefore you have one uterine cavity with two tubes attached to it (the fallopian tubes).

In your situation, the center of the McDonalds arch never moved up and got absorbed or disappeared. This creates a problem because your vagina opens into two cavities instead of one.

When you are trying to get pregnant there are many things that are going on. Timing and the enviornment has to be perfect. The inner lining of the uterus is called the endometrium and it is this lining that has to be perfect to accept the fertilized egg. When you get pregnant, the egg actually gets fertilized within the fallopian tubes and it then travels down into the uterine cavity. If the endometrium is NOT right (for whatever reason) it will not accept "implantation" of the egg. Therefore you can't get the egg to grow. There are many factors and in your case we would want to make sure that the endometrium is right for implantation. Also, once this happens you would want to have many visits to your OB/GYN for serial ultrasound. You would need to be considered a high risk pregnancy as one study showed that 30% will miscarry when involving a bicornate uterus. However, many pregnancies have and can be carried to full term. Other issues would be breach presentation and many have to deliver via C-section.

You might ask your doctor about getting what is called a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) which is were dye is injected into the vagina and up into the uterus and tubes to visualize what is going on. Ultrasound is great, but this procedure, combined with MRI, can really give you an accurate picture of what is going on. You would want to make sure you don't have what is called a didelphys uterus which is where you have two of everything and the HSG will help confirm this.

May God bless and I wish you luck in getting things figured out.

Just found out today Ivegot a bicornate uterus. Thank God I have a 2 year old healty boy who was conceived naturally. He was breech and I had a C-section...now I know why. Been trying to conceive for 20 months they are suggesting a range of options including IVF. Always wanted to be a young Mum and have a large family dreams feel a bit shattered at the moment. Have any of you had IVF what do you suggest I do next? Seeing this forum and reading these messeges has really helped. Good luck to you all xxx
