I am 26 weeks pregnant with my second child. My first pregnancy I passed my gestational diabetes screening and had no problems. I had my screening yesterday and my sugar level was 144 and the limit is 135. So now tomorrow I have to go back for my 3 hour test. A few things I am wondering.

1. I ate a bowl & a half of Honey Combs with milk about 3 hours before I got the test done. Would that affect my screening results? They didn't tell me not to eat. I realize maybe I should have choose something with less carbs and ate something higher in protein. The OB said no that wouldn't affect anything that I ate what I did but common sense tells me that if you eat sugar or carbs it's gonna' affect your sugar levels to a degree.

2. Why would I pass my 1st pregnancy screening and not the second? I was a little heavier like 10 lbs to start this time but I am much more active then I was the first time.

3. I HATE HATE HATE needles and getting my blood drawn! I asked if I can do the 1 hour again (I wasn't going to eat before) and if my test came back okay since I didn't think 144 was too far away from 135 to save me from the 3 hour needle crazy test! My OB said that since I failed the screening more than likely I will have GD. I was all freaked out until I did some research and found that if you fail the screening more than likely you won't have GD but there is always a chance I know. Why would he tell me that? What do you gals think about that?

I know the OB knows what's best and I will take the test, I just DREAD the thought of having GD and I dread thinking of this needle test! I seriously think I will faint!! I don't want that! Anybody with some advice or input? I feel like my OB is saying things to me that might not be true and it bother me a little.

Well I never had GD but in the tests I took I had to fast from midnight until the test. I have low blood sugar and will pass out if I go too long without eating and told the doc. She told me if I had to snack go ahead but it would effect the results. Every pregnancy is different so just b/c you were ok last time, unfortunately doesn't mean anything this time around. I really think you need to fast though. A friend of mine failed b/c her doc did not tell her to fast and the second test was fine. Sorry I'm not much help, good luck.

I failed the 1 hour test but passed the 3 hour version. I was told that a number of people fail their first but go on to pass the second. What are the odds of passing the second though? I don't know. But please remember the test is very important to take. Tell the nurse when you go in that you hate needles and it makes you feel faint. The vast majority of nurses are kind and will do their best to make it as easy on you as possible. But please whatever you do don't skip the test. A friend of mine who didn't have insurance skipped the test because she 'felt fine'. She ended up having an 11lb baby and he doctor in retrospect suspects she had mild GD. Another friend of mine had severe GD and her DS ended up in the NICU for a week after being born. It's far far better for both you and your child to know if you have GD or not and follow the doctor's instructions to keep it under control if you do then to maybe pass out because of a needle.

I don't know if you're still looking for responses to your questions or not, but I thought I would put my two cents worth in. I am a type 2 diabetic, diagnosed in 2001, and have learned a lot about GD through the teachings and my first and now my second pregnancies. A normal non-diabetic person usually doesn't have sugar that goes above 135 no matter what they eat or when. However, if you were at 144 on the first test, more than likely you have developed GD. Like the first person said, every pregnancy is different, just because you didn't have it with your first, doesn't mean that you won't have it with other pregnancies. Secondly, if your sugar was 144, the suggestion there is basically watch what you eat. They will more than likely send you to a nutritionist to show you the foods you should eat during pregnancy to keep your sugar levels down and you won't risk having to take insulin just by eating correctly. Granted, that takes away a lot of yummy yummy foods high in sugar and carbs, but remember, GD doesn't last forever and it's important for you and your baby. To reiterate the point Malica made, let the nurses know about your fear of needles and they can figure out a way to calm you or find a way to distract you so you don't notice. Nurses are really good at that sort of thing. So, in essence, I am basically telling you that it really isn't anything to worry about as long as you follow the doc's advice and be careful what you eat until you deliver. Good luck and I hope this helps some.
