Well I never had GD but in the tests I took I had to fast from midnight until the test. I have low blood sugar and will pass out if I go too long without eating and told the doc. She told me if I had to snack go ahead but it would effect the results. Every pregnancy is different so just b/c you were ok last time, unfortunately doesn't mean anything this time around. I really think you need to fast though. A friend of mine failed b/c her doc did not tell her to fast and the second test was fine. Sorry I'm not much help, good luck. |

I failed the 1 hour test but passed the 3 hour version. I was told that a number of people fail their first but go on to pass the second. What are the odds of passing the second though? I don't know. But please remember the test is very important to take. Tell the nurse when you go in that you hate needles and it makes you feel faint. The vast majority of nurses are kind and will do their best to make it as easy on you as possible. But please whatever you do don't skip the test. A friend of mine who didn't have insurance skipped the test because she 'felt fine'. She ended up having an 11lb baby and he doctor in retrospect suspects she had mild GD. Another friend of mine had severe GD and her DS ended up in the NICU for a week after being born. It's far far better for both you and your child to know if you have GD or not and follow the doctor's instructions to keep it under control if you do then to maybe pass out because of a needle. |

I don't know if you're still looking for responses to your questions or not, but I thought I would put my two cents worth in. I am a type 2 diabetic, diagnosed in 2001, and have learned a lot about GD through the teachings and my first and now my second pregnancies. A normal non-diabetic person usually doesn't have sugar that goes above 135 no matter what they eat or when. However, if you were at 144 on the first test, more than likely you have developed GD. Like the first person said, every pregnancy is different, just because you didn't have it with your first, doesn't mean that you won't have it with other pregnancies. Secondly, if your sugar was 144, the suggestion there is basically watch what you eat. They will more than likely send you to a nutritionist to show you the foods you should eat during pregnancy to keep your sugar levels down and you won't risk having to take insulin just by eating correctly. Granted, that takes away a lot of yummy yummy foods high in sugar and carbs, but remember, GD doesn't last forever and it's important for you and your baby. To reiterate the point Malica made, let the nurses know about your fear of needles and they can figure out a way to calm you or find a way to distract you so you don't notice. Nurses are really good at that sort of thing. So, in essence, I am basically telling you that it really isn't anything to worry about as long as you follow the doc's advice and be careful what you eat until you deliver. Good luck and I hope this helps some. |
