I’m sorry to hear about your loss Melissa. I too had a miscarriage at 21wks with my boy. I had 8 fibroids inside my uterus. I also did have a myomectomy 3 months later. After 2 months of my surgery I got pregnant. As of tomorrow I’ll be 7 months (God willing) and hopefully, I’ll be able to carry to full term. Good Luck and only do what your heart feels.

Hi Sylvia,
Did they remove all 8 fibroids? How big were they? I am very scared of a myo in case I can not get preg again. Did your OB do this or did you have a specialist do the surgery?

Mindy - October 14th, 2005 2:09 PM

Melissa- They said to wait three months because they want to see if the fibroid shrinks anymore. When I was close to 12wks it was almost 13 cm. It is down to 9 cm. now. There is a fibroid pregnancy board on babycenter.com. The women there have alot of helpful information also. I also would like to wait because I'm so confused about getting pregnant. I have three children 5,7, and 9 (they were all perfect pregnancies with no hematoma or fibroid) and my husband doesn't want anymore children after the m/c, it was hard on him too. When I m/c, I never had any pain or cramps. I had no idea that the baby got washed out because of the blood clot under the baby's placenta. When I went in for my prenatal appt. around almost 12wks they told me my pregnancy was washed out and I did not even need a D&C. I was shocked because they kept telling me the whole time I was pregnant that I would have severe cramps and pain if I m/c. The baby had been doing so well, measuring ahead with a strong up until then. I do want this fibroid out because if by accident, I get pregnant again, I wouldn't be so scared about the whole pregnancy. In three month I have to go for an u/s on the fibroid and I plan to let my gyn know that I want to be referred to a specialist to have it removed. Well I hope everything works out for you. Good Luck and God Bless!!

Melissa - What I meant to say was the baby was measuring ahead with a strong heartbeat up until then. Also I would be very scared to get pregnant again with the fibroid. God Bless!!

Ladies - I have decided to have the myo. I am a candidate for the laproscopic one. We basically decided there was no way we could handle losing a baby at 20+ weeks. I was a mess after losing this one. If we don't remove the fibroids we run a risk of miscarrying late, then having to have the surgery anyway. If we have the surgery now we remove alot fear and dread in the next pregnancy. If we leave them in and the worst case scenario happens, it will be about 25 months before we coiuld expect to have a healthy baby in our arms. If we have the surgery now, and allow about 3 months recovery time, it could be 11 months from now that we could have a baby to hold. And the pregnancy will be a little less stressfull. I think what may have pushed me over the edge is the scary stories I read at the baby center site. Also one of the fibroids is pushing on my bladder so I have frequent urination. So the surgery can fix that as well. I am 37 so I have to be careful because I don't have much time to play with. I am waiting to talk to my doctor again and ask some Qs and hopefully I can be scheduled in a week or so. Sylvia, did you have to have the surgery at any particular time in your cycle?

MelissaK - October 14th, 2005 4:04 PM

Oh and Sylvia and Mindy. I am so sorry for your losses. Ruth, don't be scared. This type of surgery looks to be very advanced these days. It just hurts I think but enjoy the drugs while you can lol. I for one plan to give some blood a few days before just in case.

MelissaK - October 14th, 2005 4:06 PM

Sylvia - sorry top be a pest here - you were pregnant 8 weeks after your myo? Was your doctor upset? Were you tense about that? Did you feel healed up? Our doc said we will have to wait 6 months but hubby and I are demanding a three month checkup and if all looks good, we'll go ahead and start trying. I think at the 6 month mark the docs will start giving us clomid if we're having problems.

For anyone who need it, here is the link to the baby center site:

are over 600 posts over there. It scared tha pants off me to read some of those posts. I think this issue should not be taken lightly if you are TTC.

UPDATE - I just got off the phone with my doctor. I left them a message today to schedule the surgery. I have 3 fibroids, the biggest is 4.5 cms. The group of two docs I see have all agreed NOT to do the surgery. They claim that fibroids do not always cause miscarriage nor degenerate. They want us to try one more time. So no surgery it looks like. We just need to be emotionally ready should the worst happen.

Mindy - October 14th, 2005 6:05 PM

I hope all goes well Melissa on ttc. I'll be praying for you to have a happy healthy 9 months. God Bless!!

rubina - October 17th, 2005 2:28 AM

Hi, You can read my earlier post above. I too had a miscarriage at 22 weeks. I have 2 fibroids. At the time of miscarriage the biggest one was 7.5 cm right above my bladder and at the cervix. As of now, 2.5 months after the miscarriage my obgy still does not want me to ttc and have given us time for another two months to wait to let the fibroids shrink. My fibroids are intramural i,e, inside the wall of uterus so she is not letting us allow any surgery as in that case risk of scar is great. The fact that fibroid was pressing the bladder gave me recurrent urine infections upto to the extent that blood in urine and with last urine infection episode, I also lost my healthy 1 Ib, 3 oz boy too. I asked doc many times how would they manage UTIs incase I get pregnant with this fibroid. She has no specific answer for that except saying that 'we'll try to manage.' SO I am also quiet confused what to do now. Wait for two more months, get pregnant again, with same fibroids at same positions. But on the other hnad fibroids are inside the wall of uterus that makes it risky to remove? Good wishes t o Sylvia and Melissa and Mindy. Love- Rubina

Mandee - October 19th, 2005 12:51 PM

A mass was spotted on my uterus in an ultrasound. Had a CT scan and doc said everything else looked fine in my abdomen. Im having an MRI tonite. He thinks this is a fibroid. Anyone else have an MRI to diagnose? Im trying to get pregnant now, but thought i should wait an see whats going on. Im 26.

Sylvia - October 20th, 2005 3:49 PM

Melissa, I wasn't pregnant when I had myomectomy. I lost my son in nov and in feb I had the surgery. In April I got pregnant. My doctor had no clue what had happened since I rushed to the er when it happened. The next day no one told her or wrote it in the files before she came in. She thought I had the baby. when I told her that wasn't the case she felt really bad. I know she was mad at her staff for not informing her. Yes, I did feel healed up after the surgery.
Ruth, yes..all 8 fibroids were taken out. Going into the surgery, we only saw 4 in the ultrasounds, but when she went in there to take them out, she found 8 in total. My ob did perform the surgery. I think my biggest one was 12cm. I looked at it like this..I was scard too to have the surgery, but I went with it anyways because I wanted to have a baby. Right now I'm28wks and on Saturday(God willing) I'll be 29wks..Good luck to everyone in their decisions

Ruth - October 20th, 2005 4:20 PM

Thanks Sylvia. That is very encouraging. I am 34 weeks right now but have multiple fibroids including 2 that are 15cm each. I had a general exam before I got pregnant and nothing was detected at all.
I am really huge now and have to be very careful all the time. I feel very fortunate to be this far along. I would like another baby but am worried a myo would scar my uterus too much and I would not be able to have any after that. My Dr wants to do a classical cut c/section to deliver the baby which may do the damage to my uterus anyway.... A final ultrasound in 2 weeks will determine if he will allow me to attempt to go into labour or will just schedule the c.
Good luck to all of you, I read all of your posts and wish you all the best!

I had a myoectomy for 3 large fibroids at age 35, and got pregnant 4 months later & delivered a healthy 10 lb. baby boy 4 months ago! So the surgery is worth it. I had no complications during pregnancy or labor from the surgery.
