I had a myoectomy for 3 large fibroids at age 35, and got pregnant 4 months later & delivered a healthy 10 lb. baby boy 4 months ago! So the surgery is worth it. I had no complications during pregnancy or labor from the surgery.

Joyce, That is awesome news. Congratulations! Very encouraging! None of the fibroids grew back during pregnancy?

Summer - October 24th, 2005 9:14 PM

I'm 13wk1d and have been experiencing light spotting off and on for about two weeks. At first it was a lot of pink and then a lot of brown and just yesterday morning, it was bright red. It's not a lot but enough to worry me. The top of my uterus is just below my belly button, it's been this big since my 10th week. I went to my OBGYN one month before I got pregnant because i had been having very severe menstrual cramps along with very heavy bleeding. A pelvic exam revealed a tiny fibroid on my uterus. The doc said it wasn't big enough to be concerned about. I am wondering if maybe the cause of my enlarged uterus and the spotting and mild cramping is because of the fibroid. I researched all of this on my own and put two and two together. I had to "convince" my doc to give me an u/s, so I am scheduled for one tomorrow afternoon. Do these symptoms sound like fibroids to anyone? Am I on the right track in thinking this?

Hi, I thought I'd tell my story here because of all the women with fibroids who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant.First though, Summer, I'm not a doctor, but I can tell you about symptoms I had with my fibroids before and after conceiving.I had heavy periods that I discovered were due to fibroids. We had ttc for over 6 years and never did, not realizing that the fibroids were the culprit, since my husband had been told he had a low sperm count. I had a myomectomy in May and was pregnant buy the first week in June. I hadn't used bc in so long and besides it didn't occur to me that I could become pregnant at all let alone so quickly. Now I am almost 23 weeks pregnant and have new fibroids that the baby kicks me in and that kind of hurts but so far so good. I have had some spotting myself but it's only been after a particular event. Once, a culture for a discharge and once after my amnio. Once it was brown and once it was pink. I have been told to let the drs know if anything was bright red. It could just be a small blood vessel bursting, esp. with those fibroids. I also have placenta previa (and am 39yrs old) so they are keeping a close watch on me. But the baby has a strong heartbeat and is moving around alot and my amnio came back normal so I am trying not to worry too much.I am surprised that your dr had to be convinced to do an US after the spotting and bright red bleeding, but I'm glad you are being seen, just to put your mind at ease. I know I didn't sleep well my first trimester.BTW, mild cramping is very common with and without fibroids.Good luck and let us know how your US goes tomorrow.

Hi there all, I posted to this site ages ago but time has moved on and now I'm 37 weeks pregnant with a 9cm diameter fibroid. At 33 weeks my baby pushed her head past the fibroid and is now lying way down low ready for action. I'm am uncomfortabley large and have quite severe back pain but baby is kicking like a mule and is "well nourished" (at 36 weeks her estimated weight was 7lbs!). This is my 2nd pregnancy and I suppose I want people to know that while fibroids can cause problems they don't always have to. Good luck Carol - hope you can avoid a c-section. I'm booked in for an induction around about the 8 November.

MelissaK - October 26th, 2005 2:05 PM

Sandy - Congrats on your success! Your basically there by now! Yes, I also want to point out that my 2 doctors discussed the pros and cons and we all agree the that it's better not to have surgery. Fibroids only sometimes cause problems. Not always. If you have a fibroid the size of a cantalope inside your uterus,. maybe that's a problem because you probably can't conceive anyway. But if it's in the lining, the chances of NO problems but a couple of small issues will be greater. People with no problems don't normally post on the internet!

Hi Sandy....I'm 38 weeks now and just got back from the Dr's offfice. He is planning to induce me on or around Nov 9th if she hasn't come yet. He said that her head is really low, which is why I'm feeling so much pelvic pressure but I haven't dilated, which is a little discouraging. I asked him about the c-section and he said he doesn't think I'll need one, but then he said let's just wait and see. Anyway, I'll let you know how everything goes. Good luck everyone!

AinSeattle - October 26th, 2005 5:59 PM

Thank you all for sharing your stories, especially the positive ones! I am 7 weeks and have 5 fibroids measuring between 3cm-7cm pre-conception (subserosal and intramural). I can easily feel and see the larger ones in my abdomen, did any others experience this i nthe first trimester? How did you overcome the anxiety? Have my first doc appt. next week and will determine new size/growth but my instinct tells me that they are growing rapidly.

KFish - October 26th, 2005 7:15 PM

I found out that I had a fibroid when I had my c-section. The surgeon reported that I had one on the back of the uterus and it was the size of a lemon.

I am wondering if it has gotten bigger with this pregnancy as my belly is really sticking out. I am only 25 weeks and i believe I am the size I was with my son before I was induced.

MelissaK - - October 28th, 2005 11:24 AM

**AinSeattle ** - I too could see my fibroids. I could feel them in week 7, then I could see them by week 14. The doc and I named them "fibey." Just ignore, more often than not they pose no issues. The docs just like to keep you on edge so they have no lawsuit.. lol .. in case something does happen (which it won't). My take on it? I am going to ignore them when I get pregnant again.

I am 32 years old, 21 weeks along, and have one large fibroid measuring 16 cm, and three medium ones measuring around 9 cm each. I just started feeling severe abdominal pain and cramping, along with back/hip pain. The pain is more acute as the day progresses and keeps me up at night. Thankfully my doctor told me that I could take ibuprofen for the pain. He suspects it's the fibroids degenerating. I'm wondering how long this pain usually lasts. Does it taper off or just end one day?

jess - November 5th, 2005 3:52 AM

just an update- you can read my earlier posts- i had a v12 cm fibroid that grew to 17 cm.......during pregnancy....on oct 11 my healthy 7 lb 8 oz boy was born by c section, because of the fibroid...the c was a bit of a challenge, because the fibroid was right where my ob cut, but me and my son did fine, and had no problems during pregnancy, i am still surprised that it all went ok, and am counting my blessing sdaily!! but it can happen, and be ok, and my dr says no myo right now, and to just leave the fibroid if i want more babies.......my son is now 9 lbs and doing great -stay positive gals and goodluck!!!

Ruth - November 7th, 2005 12:30 PM

Hi Jess - that is awesome news. Congratulations! You had the same situation as me. I am due in 2-3 weeks and at my last Drs appnt he told me we could attempt a vaginal delivery. Very happy about that but could end up with a classical c-section. I know you have your hands full right now, but if you get a chance let me know if your c was a classic cut and how you are healing and if that fibroid is shrinking!
I am glad to hear your news - enjoy your new baby!

Sarah - November 7th, 2005 1:00 PM

Update on my post a few days ago. I saw the perinatologist who checked out my fibroids via ultrasound. He didn't see any signs of degeneration but couldn't dismiss that it might still be the case. His opinion was that the pain is probably due to fibroids and not ligaments as ligament pain is usually felt as a sharp pain that lasts a moment whereas fibroid pain is deep, dull and constant. He said it was ok for me to take up to 2400 mg of ibuprofen every day until my 32 week, and expects that we do a c-section sometime around week 28 - 32, or later if we're lucky. It really depends on if the fibroids interfere with any of my bodily function/organs, the baby's growth, or ultimately my pain. I am happy to say that after 9 days of pain, I am feeling better and better. Almost back to normal but I am still taking it easy as I don't want to trigger the pain again. I attribute this turnaround to the prayers of friends and family. I believe God healed me and we can overcome doctors' expectations.

jess - November 8th, 2005 12:11 AM

yeah ruth, the did a bikini cut incision, but my fibroid was in the bottom, so my OB ended up doing a clasic incision on my uterus up high- it felt weird, cause it was so high i could kinda feel it her digging around in there!! like right below my ribs!! but recovery was just fine, i couldn't tell the difference, and even though the C section sucked, baby and i are fine, and within 2 weeks i felt back to my old self- oh, i was pretty swollen for those first few weeks, because of all the manhandeling on my uterus, and did get a minor infection on my incision too, but again those things healed up pretty quick too.....good luck in 2 weeks- i worried so much, and it came out ok, you'll be just fine, it helps that the drs know what they are dealing with-- i had 3 dr's in my OR!!! im not sure if the fibroid is shrinking yet, havent had an u/s- lets hope!! apparently breast feeding really helps it shrink!
