Wow that was a lot of reading. I'm very glad for it. There haven't been many posts lately, but I hope they start up again. I am 42. I am 17 wks with what I hope will be my 7th child. I have had spotting from the start and PAIN!!! My first doctors apointment they found a fibroid. It was not there when I had a mc in July '05. When it went from spotting to bleeding I was told it might also be placenta previa. The ulra sound isn't until Tuesday 1/24. But I'm very anxious. The PAIN and BLEEDING are scary. I have had 3 miscarriages in the past. I don't take them well and I am so scared. I have been on bed rest while bleeding and pelvic rest the rest of the time for over a month. Please post. Thanks. Michellem, I know how you feel. I hate the waiting. I want to know if my baby is ok, and if it will be able to stay in long enough to make it. :-(

I posted here awhile ago. I have three fibroids, the largest is 4.3 cm. I was pregnant after MC (we don't know if fibroids caused it) with twins. I just miscarried at 8 weeks. Docs say it was the fibroids and the babies could not implant correctly because of fibroids. I now need a myoectomy. Does anyone else have a similar situation where fibroids caused an early mc?

Heidi - January 28th, 2006 2:10 PM

Hi Melissa, I'm in your same situatiion and get pretty distressed by it. I've had 2 mcs now. 1st in may at 15 wks, 2nd 2 wks ago at 7 wks. Dont know if it was caused by fibroids. Did u have a scan 4 ur 2nd mc, what did it show and how did they know it wasnt implanted correctly. I've 1 large fibroid about 8cm. I'm however still not keen on myomectomy becos of all i've heard and stuff. My hub and I plan to try one more time. May God give us the grace.

MelissaK - January 28th, 2006 2:20 PM

Hi Heidi - we are very similar. My first MC in August was at about 15 weeks too. I had 3 scans this time. They showed twins implntated right around my biggest fibroid. The docs are saying the "probability" the fibroids caused these mc's is high. But there is no way to prove it. I am going to have the myoectomy, I am 38 and can't afford the time to try again. I also NEVER want to go through the late mc again - that was so incredibly horrendous! I don't know, I see quite a few happy stories posted out there ... maybe it just seems scarier than it is.

MelissaK - January 28th, 2006 7:12 PM

Heidi - also. I have gone back and forth on this surgery, the value of it. I have had 3 doctors at this point, all conversing together. We all decided to try to get pregnant again and if it succeeded, well that terrific. If not, the probability that fibroids are the problem comes into play. So, instead of mc'ing again, it's probaby better to just get these fibroids out and move on.

I had one fibroid that I learned about when I went for my first OB appointment during pregnancy. It grew to 18 cm according to one doc, but other believes it was only 14 cm. Had 6 months of on-again, off-again bedrest, pain medicine (Tylenol with codeine) around the clock for 6 months, and delivered a gorgeous healthy baby girl in May 2004. Had to have "classical" (i.e., high, vertical) c-section because of location of fibroid. Recovery was SLOW, partially perhaps because of total inactivity for 6+ months prior to delivery. Baby had a little bit of an issue in her face, perhaps from being "smushed" by the fibroid, but that was completely gone very quickly and recommended checks by cardiologist and neurologist for issues showed no problems.
Now, 20+ months after baby was born, and 5 months after stopping breastfeeding, fibroid is 12 cm (16 week size uterus) and doctors are recommending myomectomy as the best way to preserve fertility and not endanger a future baby. I am scared but also want the fibroid gone. Any perspective from those with similar experience would be welcome, thanks.

Wow W, that sounds like it must have been a totally nerve warcking experience to go through. I had to meet with a doc this morning for the pre op for the D&C I am having tommorrow and she said to me "DO NOT GET PREGNANT AGAIN UNTIL THESE ARE GONE!" Well with 2 mc's, I don't feel like I have much choice anymore. I am totally scared to have the myo but I guess it will be over fast and recovery should not be too bad... I guess, I don't know. It just sounds like a pretty barbaric surgery, I am nervous but will be scheduled for first week of March. I have to have the "open the abdomin" version.

w - January 31st, 2006 12:40 PM

MelissaK -- Barbaric is a good word for it; my surgery will also be through my abdomen, much like another c-section. It is tentatively scheduled for Feb. 23rd. Good luck to you!

MelissaK - January 31st, 2006 7:43 PM

W - I went for my D&C today (tears) and it sort of get's me all worked up to have the myo, like, ready. I really don't want to go to the surgery center for a D&C again and have the nurses recognise me and make all these "I'm sorry faces" and ask how far along I was. I'm scared but I'm ready. I think we might push to 2nd week of March. We live in Breckenrdige CO and it is the height of the snow ski season and my DH is encouraging some happy times for a few weeks before I "go down" for a few weeks after the myo. PLEASE keep me posted on how it goes. And anyone else out there, if you can give us some good experiences from the abdominal myo, please share!

MelissaK - January 31st, 2006 7:45 PM

W - How did you select your surgeon? I have a little dilemma on my hands. I can an specialist in Denver but then be very far from my doctor, or I can use my OB in Breckenridge who I think has less myo experience. But she would five mins. away from me. We don't know what to do because I believe the specialist will recommend my PB as she studied her speciality under him years ago and he thinks highly of her.

w - January 31st, 2006 8:15 PM

MelissaK - I have decided to have my OB do the surgery. He did my c-section and I did get another opinion last week that he is a good surgeon for the myo so that is comforting. If the specialist recommends your OB, that could provide some comfort -- it can't hurt to ask to hear what the specialist has to say. We are about to go on vacation (tomorrow) - partly to have some fun before being out of commission for a little while, like your husband suggested -- so I will be offline for a week, then I have an MRI to confirm the recommendation of the myo. I will check this board when I get back in a week. Good luck with your decision making!

Some encouragement...I have 6 fibroids measuring 6-14 cm each. I had no problem conceiving (first try) and despite being very concerned and nervous about how they would affect the pregnancy they have posed no problems thus far. I am 21 weeks and feel great, my doctor explains that my situation is similar to carrying twins and to expect to be larger than average. The fibroids grew rapidly in the first trimester but I have regular ultrasounds to monitor them and they have now stabilized. Keep positive ladies, it makes all the difference:)

IHello, you can read my prevoius entries above. I, too, know how it is to lose a baby so late. I was 21 wks when I lost my son Angel. I think it had to to with my fibroids. So I had the surgery to take them out. Recovery from this surgery is like a c-section. I was out for 8 wks. I was able to get pregnant again and on Dec. 30th, 2005 my daughter was born. I made it to 39 wks. I was so happy that I was able to carry to term. Hopefully in a year, my husban and I will try again to have another bundle of joy. Good luck to everyone on their surgery. A little piece of advice...when you are recovering, try to have someone there all the time to help you or at least half day. This will help a whole lot. The first couple of weeks you will feel weird walking around, so you might want to kick your feet up in bed or on the sofa in the living room watching tv. I took up again crocheting while I was out. Make sure you get everything you like to do or need around the house before you have your surgery. Good luck and God Bless..

I am 20 weeks pregnant just knew about a 10 cm fibroid to the lower part of my uterus. Its my first pregnancy &I'm29.I never knew I had a fibroid before. The tech said I will probably have a C-section and wondered how I am not having pain! I cried a lot first bcz I am already a lupus patient, so I already have my risks. My doctor assigned me another US after 12 weeks. Arent they supposed to watch its growth more often? I just moved to canada a year ago and not satisfied with the healthcare system at all. What can I do?

Serena - February 4th, 2006 8:27 AM

I am 18 weeks, 2 days pregnant and I have a large fibroid about 8 cm in size. At 6 weeks, it was about 5 cm, so it's growning. Luckily, baby looks good. I am worried about preterm labor, but it's reassuring to know that many women here go on to have normal deliveries! If anyone cares to keep in touch about fibroids and pregnancy, please email me at serenamcca@yahoo.com!

Hi, I have read all of these posts and am finding a lot of comfort in them. I had the surgery to remove my fibroids and fix the shape of my uterus (I had a bi-cornate usterus) and I am now 15 weeks pregnant. I also have 5 fibroids that have grown since the surgery. I went to the doc yesterday for severe pain and he said it was from the fibroids, but he couldnt tell if they were degenerating or not. He told me to take ibuprofen and gave me darvocet so I could sleep at night. Does anyone know how long these painful episodes last? I am on day three and OH MY GOSH! it hurts so bad.
