Fibroids

Hello All |

I have fibroids while pregnant, too. I didn't even know I had them until I went to have CVS testing at 10 weeks, and the sonographer asked me if I knew I had them (I didn't). I have three that were detected (at the inside top of my uterus), the largest being about an inch. The placenta was located between a couple of the fibroids, but the doctor didn't seem to think it was an issue, though he wasn't able to perform the CVS testing (we've rescheduled for my 12th week). I was told it's a very common condition, especially in women over age 35 (I'm 47). I was also told they tend to stretch and flatten out during pregnancy and can be treated afterwards. That's all I know about them so far, but expect to learn more at my next doctor's appointment. I'm even more curious after reading some of the posts here. For instance, I was never told they can cause a miscarriage or premature labor. I would have thought that if it was that much of a problem, I would've been told. |

Hey D - thanks - I have been seeking a specialist to get that 2nd opinion you suggested but it seems that the specialist is the same as the perinatologist who measured the fibroids and told me the news... I go in to talk to my Dr about it in a week. I have read so many things online about myomectomy specialists but there do not appear to be any in my area at all. Has anyone out there had a cesarean-myomectomy before? If so - what was your experience? |

I was just diagnosed with an uterine fibroid outside the uterus wall after having constant, intense pelvic pain for a day and an half and the fibroid, smaller than a pea, on the right hand side near my bikini line (like a lump of coal). I'm 37 and 25 weeks pregnant with my first. The good news is that everything is fine with the baby. The bad news is the pelvic pain and the intensity of the pain when the baby moves near the fibroid. Until the pelvic pain a couple of days ago, my pregnancy has been pretty smooth sailing with no problems. My dr seems to think that the fibroid might be causing me intense pelvic pain because it's degenerating. I'm hoping that it is too and that this pain will subside or go away within 3-5 days, or at least stays the same size. Except for tylenol, any advice or suggestions for pain relief? |

fibroids are generally caused by estrogen...that is why they can rapidly grow when pregnant- they can also shrink when u breastfeed.....so that a good thing! my update- i am now 28 weeks, measuring 32 -due to fibroid.....and baby is growing, nourishing and doing well!! have had some spotting, which the dr thinks is due to possible degeneratiion (yay!!) as my lovely fibroid has now grown to 15 cm!! she is quite convinced it will shrink after i start to breastfeed...if it doesn't cut off its own blood suppply first.......it is the bottom of my uterus, and baby is in the top...which is apparently good- more blood supply is in the top of the uterus anyway....but it also - like ruth- will mean more blood loss at the time of my C, and a tougher recovery - with an up and down incision...but aside from that baby is doing just fine.......!! |

Hi Jess - when you deliver are you having a cesarean-myomectomy? Did you Dr say anything about the potential of scarring your uterus? Did they tell you that you would need a blood transfusion? and possibly a hystorectomy? |

I am 12 weeks now and had a scan yesterday which showed i have a 5cm fibroid. I was told to go home and not to worry about it as it might not get any bigger and that i will now be cared for by consultants . I was told i was lucky because it's not at my cervix. I'm now really worried about being able to carry the baby full term and if the fibroid will need to be removed after the baby is born. where do i find out more? |

hey ruth.......no, my dr said she would definately NOT do a c-section / myomectomy.......i will be having a c section, but she said during pregnancy it not a good time to do a myomectomy as the uterus is very blood enriched and there would be far too much blood loss, or even a chance of bleeding out.... she will cut above my fibroid, and do a c section - unfortunately it will be an old fashioned up and down cut, and the uterus does have more of a blood supply near the top, so i will have a fair amount of blood loss...more than with a normal C....she said she will try and do it so we don't need a transfusion, but i will not be opposed to one if needed as i know how hard it can be to recover from sugery if alot of blood is lost....and if i am gonna be a mom, and feeding another it may just be too hard to regenerat new blood in time as well!! scarring will be monimal as we are not taking the fibroid out...that usually comes from fibroid removal, as they often have to take out parts of the uterine wall and reconstrusct...she also said the finbroid will probably shrink after pregnancy, and definately if i breastfeed.........she has said nothing about a possible hysterectomy, and as i want more kids she said i should have no problems concieving & carring again......wioll have to breastfeed this one for as long as possible, to get this fibroid smaller!! of course i am aware if they do mistakenly cut into the fibroid, or if the bleeding becomes uncontrollable than a hystorectomy may be necessary- and that and the uncontrolled bleeding thought do scare the heck out of me!!!!! but my dr is great, she is very confident and reassuring....honestly if were you i would get a second opinion....my old dr told me i would never get pregnant with a fibroid, never carry a child, and that i should get a myo asap- in fact he boooked me in the hospital without telling me!! - he also said i should just do a hysterectomy (i have no kids and was 29 at the time) as it would be easier and i would probably need one anyways......well, i didn't listen to him......had no surgery and got myself knocked up!!! my dr now said its much better i didn't have a myo, as scar tisse can often cause more pregnancy/conception problems than a fibroid....!! so maybe try and get another opinion.... |

I too also have a very large fibroid (12 cm) along with a subchrionic hematoma. I am 9wks 4days and every thing seems to be going well with the baby. I am scared!! My doctors are encouraging though and that helps. My fibroid is on my left wall of the uterus and the baby is on the right side. Reading some of your posts are so encouraging to me. Well thanks for listening and God Bless! |

Hello, it’s me Sylvia. I’d like to update that I’m 18 wks and doing fine. I did have the myomectomy and they took out 8 fibroids. I was scared that I couldn’t get pregnant, but I was lucky enough to do so. I do say that your periods do get a lot lighter as if you were taking the pill. My surgery was like a c-section, but I was out for the count. I do have a scar, but it’s in the bikini line. You can’t see it unless you shave or wax everything downstairs. This time around, I did not go through any pelvic pain like the last pregnancy with my son (may God bless his little soul in heaven). The only pains I get now are lower back pain and in my hips. At the time, for the pain, they gave me Tylenol with codeine. I was out of work for 2 weeks. I know the pain that you are feeling when they degenerate. I felt better within 10 days. I talked to my doctor and she told me that she couldn’t see why I could deliver my baby vaginal. If complications do occur, like if I don’t dilate or the baby’s heartbeat or blood pressure drops, then I could be going into having a c-section. At least I’ll know how the recovery will be. The first 4-5 days, it’s a witch to get out of bed. I suggest turning and lying on your side and pushing yourself up with your arms. DO NOT TRY TO USE YOUR STOMACH MUSCLES and try to sit up from the lying position. After that walking around for me wasn’t that bad. My doctor told me not to baby myself. Try to walk around little by little and not to be laying or sitting down for the whole 8 wks I was out. I know all this information that is out there about fibroids and it says that they don’t cause miscarriages and still births, but you have to look carefully. I know it get tiring, but I did find some info after I lost my son to stay off my feet and relax. It also mention that it was a possibly to miscarry. Anything can happen, as you see with me, I lost my son at 21 wks. He was considered a still born, not a miscarried. I’m not trying to scar anyone, but do be careful anything can happen. I’m still very scared now, but enjoy my pregnancy because I can feel my baby move. With my previous pregnancy with the fibroids, I couldn’t tell if my baby was moving or the fibroids were. I just pray to God to let me deliver a healthy baby for my husband and I to give lots of love too!! |
