I went for my second scan today and they saw an embryo and saw the heartbeat!

please help me! I had my first u/s 2 weeks ago and the dr couldn't see anything but my hcg levels rose from 1000 to 2000 in 3 days. i went for the second u/s today. i measured 5w5d, the dr could see the sac but NO BABY and my hcg level today is 12.500.
i had to force the answers out of her, i found out more from the internet than i did from the dr, plus she wanted to hurry up and do the d&c and was upset when i told her that if i were to miscarry i'd like to let nature take its course.
any advice? where is my baby hiding? PLEASE!!!

Andrea please don't panic! It is NOT NORMAL TO SEE A BABY AT YOUR STAGE OF PREGNANCY. Most baby's don't show up until 7 weeks. Please look up 'fetal pole' on Wikipedia. It will tell you that it is quite normal for the fetal pole (baby/embryo) to not show up until 8 weeks. It also says that they usually show up for the first time at 6 weeks. On abdominal scan it takes even longer and can usually only be first sighted at 6.5 weeks. DO NOT HAVE A D&C. Your Doctor is totally irresponsibile to even mention it when you are 5 and a half weeks pregnant. Also, it is impossible to accurately date the progress of your pregnancy at this point. I am certain of my dates - I should be 7 weeks. But my ultrasound has me at 5 weeks. My baby has a heart beat but it only half the length it should be! This proves that everything can be fine and the baby can be behind schedule at the moment. Things vary massively from woman to woman at this point. Your baby IS ther. It is just too small to be seen on these clumsy scans yet, or it is still hiding out in the yolk sac, or your womb is tilted back making things take sooo much longer to show up, or he is just hiding out. I believe your chances of finding the baby in two weeks time with a heartbeat are as good as any woman. I went for a scan at 5 weeks 6 days and they saw nothing! My baby is doing fine now. You have nothing to worry about. You are perfectly normal. The baby does not show up until 5mm and that is usually at 6-6.5 weeks. DO NOT get a D&C until at least 8 weeks. They found my baby for the first time at 7 weeks with a heartbeat and by 8 weeks you will see yours.

Also Andrea - when they did the ultrasound on me at 5 weeks 6 days and saw nothing my HCG was 10,000! My baby first showed up at 62,000 HCG! and then it was just the tiniest flickering grain of rice. It is normal to not see your baby yet. You cannot go on HCG anyway. It is meaningless to try and understand HCG it unless it is way to high or it drops/stops climbing. You are worrying yourself over nothing here. 80% of women would see nothing no embryo on a scan at less than 5 weeks. You should re-book for another scan - not in a week - in two weeks - or at least a week and half, or you are not giving your baby a reasonable chance to show up. You are too early yet. You could have ovulated late in your cycle. Your baby could have taken a while getting implanted and established and before 6.5 weeks they do not grow at a millimeter a day. After 6.5 weeks growth is usually rapid and every day makes a big difference. But at your stage your little one is not big enough to be seen yet. Give him another week and a half at least before you start getting worried - remember what wikipedia says: 'it is quite normal not to see the embryo on ultrasound until the 8th week of pregnancy'.

i've just heard from my doctor who's saying there's no hope...i've asked for my hcg level to be retested tomorrow so i can compare to the results i got on Saturday and she said: IT'S A WASTE OF MONEY!!! can't believe that...however, i insisted as this is my money not her's, so i'm going tomorrow for another blood test. i'm disheartened and sad, but whatever will happen i will not get the d&c, i'd rather miscarry on my own, even if it takes weeks. i'm 26 and this is my first pregnancy :(((((

HCG should not be looked at after a scan is done. HCG varies so much from woman to woman in early pregnancy, and there is such a wide range of 'normal' that it is pretty meaningless after it reaches 5000. Most doctors do not look at HCG after it reaches 5000 as the doubling times slow considerably - often to four days or more - once it reaches this point. If you want to look at your HCG I would advise that you not worry unless your HCG has dropped or stopped climbing. Take a look at this website w w w .b e t a b a s e . c o m (without the spaces between letters and dots - I had to put those in or the message wouldn't be accepted.) The website is a place where thousands of women input their HCG levels and you can look at averages and doubling times. You will see how widely they vary.

Also it is important to realize that the dates given at early ultrasounds are often wrong and often by up to three weeks - you could have ovulated late, you could have had a long implanting phase, you culd have had an irregular cylce, your womb could be tilted back, the machines are clumsy = all these reasons can account for things not showing up until later than expected. Please see the website: w w w . m i s d i a g n o s e d m i s c a r r i a g e . c o m (without the spaces between letters and dots) - you will find hundreds of stories from women who were told there was no hope - they waited a couple of weeks and found a heartbeat and healthy baby.

Whatever you do, do not get the D & C before 8 weeks. If you get a D & C at 8 weeks make sure you have another ultrasound to confirm missed miscarriage before the D & C - many people find a healthy embryo at these 'confirmation/prior D & C' scans. If I were you I would leave things to happen naturally and not have a D & C. However, I still think you have the odds on your side and will probably have a fetal pole and heartbeat visible in the next couple of weeks.

I have been right where you are. I have tow healthy children and have had two miscarriages. When I was pregnant with my second child I went for an u/s. We thought I was about 9 wks. They only saw a sac and a fetal pole. I went back 5 days later still the same thing. The u/s tech was scheduling me for a d&c. I wouldn't have it done because I was having no other signs of miscarriage. One week later I had another u/s. We saw a hb immediately. The whole time my hcg levels were declining. I went on to have a very healthy baby girl who is 5 now.

I was high-risk so I went in for my first ultrasound at around 6 weeks and there was no fetal pole or heartbeat. They told me not too freak out, and that even a few days could change things dramatically. (But of course I freaked out anyway.)
I went back 2 weeks later (I'd been travelling out of town so couldn't go sooner) and the heartbeat was great and strong. And I'm now 20 weeks along with a very healthy baby. So ... please try not to worry! :-)

I was sent to the ER with DS to rule out an ectopic pg at 5w. They did an u/s and didn't find anything to suggest a pregnancy but a thickening of the lining of my uterus. They said to prepare for a m/c and I could start trying again right away. I was devastated!

They were totally wrong. It was just too early to see much at 5w. DS is a happy, healthy almost 6yo today. I wouldn't worry too much just yet!!

With this pg I had my first u/s at 6w4d and could barely see anything but a tiny beating heart. Don't despair! it's really early!! :hug

I had an ultrasound at 5 weeks that showed a gestational sac and a yolk sac that measured small, with no fetal pole. I also had the rudest, most unhelpful ultrasound tech ever in the whole wide world, who was so negative that DH and I walked out of the hospital crying, and SURE that we were going to lose this baby.

My midwife calmed us down and refered me to a chart that said at 5 weeks, 0% of ultrasounds showed a fetal pole, and at 6 weeks only 86% did. We did a couple of beta hCG tests, which were doubling appropriately and showed good levels, so I was told to consider myself pregnant until proven otherwise. We're going to do another U/S around 8 weeks, but so far so good... continuing symptoms, good beta numbers, no bleeding.

They didn't see a fetal pole or heartbeat with my LO until 7 weeks, I had had a u/s done at 5 weeks and at 6 weeks and all they saw was the gestational sac and yolk sac, and I also had spotting & bleeding. I wouldn't worry too much especially since the Dr. said everything is looking normal, you may just not be as far along as you think you are either.

They didn't see mine until 9 weeks, and couldn't hear the heart beat at 7, so don't be worried. All little babies develop at differant rates. I am sure everything will be fine when you go back in a few weeks.
It did scare me though when they couldn't hear the heart, so I understand. Hang in there... And I hope all goes well with you.

I'm really starting to feel like early ultrasounds for 'dating' purposes do more harm than good... when I was freaking out, a friend linked me to a babycenter page where the original poster was freaking out about the same thing that happened to both of us and there were 14 PAGES of "Me too!" replies. Most of them came out okay, which I found really reassuring.

It looks like all odds are against me having a baby. they retested my hcg levels and they have dropped to 10.000 from 12.500 two days ago. so I’m waiting to bleed out cause I refuse to get the abortion. I’m so heartbroken and my head is spinning...

I'm so sorry you've had worrying news. HCG isn't everything though. Cheryl actually had declining numbers for awhile:

They only saw a sac and a fetal pole. The u/s tech was scheduling me for a d&c. I wouldn't have it done because I was having no other signs of miscarriage. One week later I had another u/s. We saw a hb immediately. The whole time my hcg levels were declining. I went on to have a very healthy baby girl who is 5 now.

I know it's so hard to hope and wait and I don't want to give you false hope, but you have two inconclusives at the moment: an HCG reading (never conclusive) and a too-early scan. I think you should book for one more scan in a week to two weeks time - it is standard procedure given your early dates and the situation. I applaud you for choosing to let things happen naturally - that way there will be no 'what ifs' or regrets. I still have real hope for your pregnancy. Wishing you all the very best. Cheyne xx

This is why i want to wait!!!! because of stories like the one below. I REFUSE TO GET THE d&c!!!!!!!!!! i have to fly to my home country in June and the Dr said it's very dangerous to fly like this, that i could hemorage badly...at this point i don't care if it kills me, i will not get the d&c. i might sound crazy....but it will break my heart if i found out that i shouldn't have had the d&c.

Hi there. I read your story and Im going thru the same thing with my doc. I am preg with my 5th child and found out at 6 weeks and they confirmed with a US and found no fetal pole just the sack and water. My HCG level was 1900 My doc said that with a 98% that I will m/c. Because with levels that high there WOULD be a fetal pole! My HGC levals were normal so far and Im waiting it out till something happens. I started to spot today just a tiny bit, I got nervouse and called the doc and he wants to US again tomarrow and said he can let me know with 100% certainty IF there is a baby or not. He thinks it is already over... I can't live my life without hope...Im a hair over 7 weeks now and I am going AMA and going to let my body do whats right for itself will I think that I am in harms way. As of the last 6 hours the spotting has stopped and im praying really hard.If this is meant to be then it is meant to be but IF i can give this child one last hope, then is that not our job as the mother to do so? I think so !

Please write me back asap. I need to know how things turned out for you and ANY thing that you can maybe tell me to help my situation would be great. God bless you and your choices and all your loved ones.

TODAY I HAD MY ULTRASOUND. I ASKED MY TECH TO TELL ME IF THERE WAS ANY SIGN OF A FETAL POLE EVEN IF NOT ALIVE AND SHE LOOKED AROUND AND SAID WELL "HOW ABOUT A HEARTBEAT?" 140 AND TICKING STRONG. THE BABY IS 7 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS AND WAS NOT THERE LAST WEEK AND NOW THERE AND HEALTHY SO FAR.( HIDING PERHAPS OR ???) MY DOC WAS SHOCKED AFTER I RAN STRAIGHT FROM ULTRASOUND BACK TO HIS OFFICE TO SAY "bo'yaaaaa" IN HIS FACE. I want every woman to know that the ONLY way that the tech saw this life growing in me before the Doc wanted to end his life is she put me on a THICK foam wedge under my hips and jacked them up SO high that I thought I was going to get sick. Using a vaginal probe US she was able to find my little "Bean" and the heartbeat was something that I could have stared at forever. Please Please Please Ask for them to do this to you even if they look at you like your weird, INSIST!!! This saved my Unborn child !!!

I RECENTLY WAS IN THE HOSPITAL FOR SPOTTING AND CRAMPING AND WHEN THEY DID MY U/S THEY SAID THEY SEEN A SAC BUT NO BABY. THEY TOLD ME I WAS A POSSIBLE THREATENED ABORTION, 4 DAYS LATER I HAD A REPEAT U/S AND THERE WAS A LITTLE HEART BEAT AND EMBRYO. I WAS THRILLED, BUT I HAVE STILL HAD SOME CRAMPING AND OCCASIONAL SPOTTING, I'M JUST HOPING IF THIS PREGNANCY IS MEANT TO BE I'LL START TO FEEL BETTER, AND IF IT'S NOT I HOPE IT ENDS SOON. I'M SCARED TO FEEL ATTACHED, MY FIRST PREGNANCY WAS GREAT EXCEPT AT MY 19 WEEK ULTRASOUND THEY SEEN A CHOROID PLEXUS CYST IN MY DAUGHTERS BRAIN, THEY SAY ITS A MARKER FOR DOWNS OR TRISONOMY. THEY OFFERED US THE CHANCE TO DO AN AMNIO BUT WE DECLINED AND THANKFULLY SHE WAS BORN A HEALTHY 9POUND 4.5OZ BABY. I'M JUST FEARFUL THAT I'M GONNA GO THREW THE SAME THING. My wife and I are trying to get PG. We did the IUI on June 3th and 4th , 2009. after the IUI ( the next day) She got a fever of some thing like 37.4 C, but that went off. since then she experience some cramps and light pinkish spotting. However yesterday, she noticed tiny red spot when she wipped. We didn't know what to do, so I decided to go to E.R.
they did the Blood test and the HSG was way high ( i think it was 28K), so the ER doc told us it could be twins. E.R said to come back next day to do the U/S today and DOC said that there is womb, but no fetus pole.They said that means there is no growth = no baby. In addition, they noticed some paraovartian cyst on one of her overies. We r hurting a lot. However, we have another U/S scheduled this incoming friday with the repro centre.
i guess this situation is the same as Cheyne had experienced. We r so lost right now, trying to calculate if we r really in the 5th week or 4th or 4.5th.
I really need someones opinion about it.

Lst week i went for early scan and thought i was about 7weeks pregnant but they couldnt see anything only the sac and a dot in the sac,they said i was only about 4wks.
So they decide to do hcg levels and they were-5541,6625 and the last one dropped to 6525 this was on saturday.they said you will lose the baby and asked if i wanted them to do a d & c i sid no.
Then today we went for another scan and they saw the heartbeat and said i am just under 6weeks i cant believe it.I am so worried now because of the hcg but lots of people say it doesnt matter.
