I was 19 when I was pregnate with my first child. I woke up one night in excruciating pain. It hurt so bad I couldn't even move. My boyfriend thought I was going into labor and so did I at first except instead of on and off pain it was constant. I couldn't even walk to the car to go to the hospital. Finally when we got there they told me I had a kidney stone. I didn't even know what that was. They wanted to give me medication to help aleviate the pain but I kept refusing because of the baby. After about 6 hours in the ER they MADE me take an injection of what I can not remember exactly now, but they assured me that it would not hurt the baby. ( I was about 5 months along.) As soon as I was medicated and able to relax a little I passed the stone and everything was ok, except that I still hurt for a couple days afterward. Good luck to you. |

Oh my gosh I thought that I was alone in this horrible struggle! I am 16 weeks pregnant and have kidney stones. This is my 3rd pregnancy with them. I get them when I am not pregnant but pregnancy brings them on more. Last year after my 2nd was born I had lithotripsy, it really helped. Now my urologist wants me to consider surgury within the next 6 weeks. Has anyone out there had surgury while pregnant and what would you advise to me? I have lived with pain for 10 years and had about 35 stones. I feel like I can't keep going like this and feel grateful to all of you for your stories. |

Well, I must say, I haven't had as many problems as a lot of your ladies on here. I am 19 yrs old, and am 30 wks along today with a baby girl. I too had kidney attacks. The first one was when I was 5 1/2 months along. It was horrible, I thought at first I was having early labor and was scared to death. I was in the hospital 3 days. Never finding a kidney stone on the Ultra sound, they sent me home and said it was from the baby smashing my Urethra causing my kidney to back up. Well needless to say, I thought I was in the clear, until I had another attack at 28 wks. I was in the hospital 5 days. I was ready to go home on the 3rd day, when all of a sudden right as I was about to get discharged, I had a severe attack on my left side. The urologist and OB on call decided that the only way to solve this problem was with stents. So the next morning I had them put in. However, after getting home and after 3 days I was in so much pain and discomfort I wanted them out!! I cried all the time, and was always concerned with the amount of blood in my urine, it wasn't pink like the dr. stated it would be, rather it was pure red. I went a week and a 1/2 until I finally couldn't take it anymore. I met with the urologist and scheduled to have them removed. When they removed them, IT WAS THE WORST PAIN OF MY LIFE!~! I screamed and it seemed like it took forever. The nurse kept telling me labor was worse, but after reading all your postings on this website I knew she was just talking out of her butt. Which made it even worse!! NEVER EVER AGAIN will I ever get stents put in. They are talking about inducing me at 35-37 wks along. Depending on if I have another attack. For you ladies who kept the stents in, You're brave! I have no pain tolerance what so ever. and for you ladies who have kidney stones good luck! They still never figured out what my problem was. Now I am just hoping for a healthy baby, considering all the pain meds I was on constantly. |

Mine was the same - about 6 months pregnant with all 3, I had attacks, and then again later on a few times. No stones found. We believe that it just got crowded in there, and the ureter got caught between the baby and something hard - either the pelvis one time, or more often a hard spasming back muscle. Liquid morphine was the only way through for me - usually the attack would go away in 1-3 days. I wonder whether a muscle relaxant would've helped. Anyway, I'm over 37 weeks with my last pregnancy, getting lots of small contractions, so I know it's almost over, FOREVER! If I get another attack at this stage, I'll just have the baby. Good luck to you. |

I don't know if muscle relaxer would've helped. probably not. The pain from the attack only lasted maybe 5 hours to where it was excruitating after that it was just really sore. The only thing that worked for me was demerol through IV and hip, and Phenegrin. Other that, the pain remained and I got no rest. They gave me Vicodin to take at home, and that didn't even help with pain, just knocked me out for an hour or so, to where I could get at least a lil bit of rest. Thank you! and goodluck to you too. They said if I have another attack depending on how far along, they will just induce me* |

I can't believe this happens to so many pregnant women and had never heard of this --took my health for granted i guess. i had never had stones until last week. I was in terrible pain and thought for sure I was having back labor--I am 29 weeks and had horrific back labor with my son 21 months ago. it took 9 hours in L and D and then admittance to Antepartum after the ultrasound for them to diagnose me and get the Morphine going in. i passed one of them in the hospital. i've had only two small stones so I can't imagine what you ladies with huge stones are going through. i spent 4 days in the hospital and am now on Tylenol with Codeine. It helps very little bit but i couldn't just stay in the hospital waiting to pass these things. not sure what is in store for me but i will definately push the water and will stop popping the Tums--I was taking the max dose per day -10. Every doctor in my OB group seems to be at a loss as how to help me or how to prevent this--they say it happens sometimes. it is very frustrating. as for now, i am just waiting, waiting, waiting for this last stone to pass and am here at work so i don't use up all of my Family Leave before the baby is born. i will keep watching this sight for more info/advice as i am new to this and clearly in the dark. the ultrasound also showed i had polyps on my Gallbladder. my doctor says we will address this after i deliver--is this all one big related problem? i just don't know what to think. Thank you all for sharing. I wouldn't wish this pain on anyone but glad i'm not so alone. |

I can relate to your problem. I had a kidney stone when I was 26 weeks pregnant and I passed it thank god. I had it for a long time a couple of months because I would get these really sharp pains and thought it was my back hurting from my belly stretching so I would take a warm bath and it would seem to go away and than later come back. One night I woke up the pain was so severe that I was crying and I went to the restroom and there was blood. I went into the hosptial and they couldn't figure out what was wrong until they did an ultrasound and I passed it that night. The doctors said if I wouldn't of passed it that it could be dangerous on your kidneys and the baby. They don't do surgery and he said that they usually make you wear a bag to urinate in. Than when I had the baby I had another stone about a month and a half afterwards. That stone I could not pass and I had surgery. They put a stint in for a week and removed it. I am okay now my daughter is almost three and I am so scared to have another baby. My husband and I want to try and I am so scared that I will get another stone and not be able to pass it. I get these really sharp pains in my side which is the side that I had my stones and it scares me. I have been checked but the doctors think that I have damage from the stones. Some days it scares me because it will get so painful. Is there anything we can do to prevent this? |

I had an 8mm stone removed about 5 days ago ouch! The doctor put in a stent and will be removing it tomorrow. I can't wait. I didn't think that I would be in more pain after the surgury. I spent 7 hours in recovery to to get control of the pain. I had a great nurse, He stayed by my side the whole time and had others refil the pain meds. Thank you soo much for your response. I truly hope that all will recover quickly from the stones. We are a wonderful group of women and people that know me that don't have this problem are so awesome in helping me when I need it. I've been so lucky in having a great ob/gyn and urologist. Both have been working together to see me through this as pain free as possible. I hope and pray for all of us daily. I hope that I can be of help to anyone that needs it. |

I am now 32 wks pregnant and have been battling kidney stone issues since 21 wks. I ended up in the ER with severe pain and vomiting. After 2 days, the urologist put a stent in. I passed a stone 3 wks later and things went downhill from there. The stent started causing lots of pain and the urologist was a jerk! He basically said there was nothing that could be done until the baby was born and told me to talk to my OB about the pain. OB sent me back to him because he didn't feel that the stent should be causing so much trouble. The urologist sent me for an ultrasound but never gave me results and then sent a letter to my OB saying he didn't want to deal with me until after the baby. After feeling like a ping-pong ball, I sought out another urologist. He said the ultrasound showed several stones (largest 1.5 cm) in my kidney so he didn't feel removing the stent was an option but that it needed changed. He said during pregnancy stents should be changed every 6 weeks because of buildup(I had had mine for 10). I had the surgery on Thursday and the stent was heavily encrusted (he had trouble removing it.) He also told me that had it been left in until I deliver (what the original urologist planned to do) it would have been stuck for sure! My advice to anyway with this problem is to ask lots of questions and, if you arent' getting any answers, seek out someone who will help. Pregnancy limits what can be done about stones but its not an excuse for poor care. |
