Thank you Nicole for your quick response. After having another attack on Sunday night that lasted 3 1/2 hours, I went to my Ob-gyn the next morning and demanded further testing. Sure enough, you were right, I do have gallstones. I was immediately sent to the surgeon who is hesitant in doing surgery at this time to remove my gallbladder because of the pregnancy. According to him, there is a very small chance that the surgery could induce labor but it is a risk that I will try to avoid at all costs. In the meantime, I've been attack free now for 3 days. So wish me luck. I am relieved in knowing what is going on with me and I look forward to being pain free in the future. Thanks again for your feedback.

I am glad to hear you were finally diagnosed properly....I wouldn't compromise the babys health either...but if you have attacks go to the ER they will give you pain meds and you'll be fine.
I wish you luck and I am glad i could help.
Take Care

I know first hand surgery is an option during pregnancy. I am seven months pregnant and had a kidney stone removed a couple of days ago. It was horrible! There reasoning for the surgery was either I have the surgery get it removed get off the moriphine. Or continue on the pain medication not eating and that would be worse for the baby. I am not sure where you are but I had this done in Denver, Colorado. God luck! I truly do feel your pain!!

i had 2 stones at 27 weeks pregnant and remained in the hospital for 6 days. My uroligist put a stent in my right kidney my third day in the hospital. The stent will remain until I deliver. It is very uncomfortable and can be very painful as I have extreme incontinence. The good news is the baby is in great shape and has not suffered a bit.

Vanessa!
You are welcome. I want people to know that there are alternatives to having a painful stent! I survived with a nephrostomy for 6 months and lived to tell about it! lol

I'm curious if anyone has heard of a scenario like mine. At 31 weeks, I suffered the right-side pain and eventually was admitted to the hospital, where I was diagnosed with "severe hydronephrosis" and kidney infection. On the operating table to insert a stent, they found -- and removed -- the kidney stone. But then they put in the stent anyway, just in case there were more stones they couldn't see (they had done an ultrasound). The urologist told me I could have the stent taken out if I couldn't tolerate it; now I'm scheduled to have it removed at 36 weeks when the baby is close to term ... and I am COUNTING the days!! Has anyone had a stent in despite having removed the stone? I'm struggling with some guilt for having the stent removed. The doctor and obstetrician agree this plan is reasonable and that my risk is low, but I suppose I could suffer with the stent and minimize the risk for the baby even further. Thoughts? I'm so grateful for this Web site, and so sympathetic toward all of us sufferers!

P.S. If you're having trouble sleeping because of your stent, I highly recommend trying a recliner! The angles of your body are different in a recliner than in a bed, and I find it much easier to find a comfortable position quickly, not to mention getting up and down.

Hi Julie, I had stones at 26 weeks and had surgery, and a stent put in. I only had to have the stent in for a week. I didn't have any other stones that they could see, but I did end up having more about a month after I had my son. Try not to feel guilty for getting it removed. You are far enough along that if you did have the baby everything would be fine. Plus being stressed and uncomfortable all this time isn't good either. Good luck to you!

I just had the lovely experience of having a kidney stone. I was 30 weeks pregnant. I thought it was a kidney infection so I went to the hospital. They sent me to labor and delivery and gave me stadol and morphine you name it, but it did not help. The stone was completely blocking my right kidney so it was extremely swollen. I had surgery after being admitted for less than 24 hrs. Thank heavens for the surgery I would have died without it. So if you do need surgery they will do it. i was put under completely and they monitored the baby the whole time but the pain was almost completely removed after I woke up. If I didn't have the surgery i would have gone into kidney failure which could result in a transplant or even death. So what you heard about surgery not being an option is completely untrue. I am 31 weeks now and had surgery 3 days ago. Me and the baby are doing fine.

At 22 weeks I ended up in the emergency room with the worst pain of my life. I found out I had a large kidney stone blocking my ureter causing a major kidney infection. I had emergency surgery to save my kidney by having a stent placed to drain my kidey. I am now 31 weeks and still have my stent. Some days the pain is too much to bear. I am taking vicodin every 4 hours around the clock. My OB states it is better for me to continue the pain medication than to end up in pre-term labor as a reaction to the pain. I have pretty much been told that the stent will need to remain in place until after my daughter is born, and that I will continue to stay on the pain medication as well. The only alternative I was given was to have a nephrostomy tube placed into my kidney. This would require a small hole being placed into my back to my kidney and a tube being placed to drain urine from my kidney. This procedure is done under what is called flouroscopy. I have read some sites where women have written that the nephrostomy tubes are painless. They have the tube replaced evey 2 weeks and wear a pad over the tube to catch the urine. I just do not know if I want to put my baby through another procedure?????? The only advice I can really give is to drink lots of water and cranberry juice, and just hang in there!

Well I am not pregnant, I wanted to share a story about my pregnant daughter. She is now 7 months pregnant and she has had kidney stones since she was about 12 weeks pregnant. She has been admitted to the hospital 5 times with this. She crys and is in pain every day. She has straight urine in her blood bad enough that the nurse's at the hospital ask her if she was having her monthly period. She has been on different pain medications but nothing helps her. The doctor told her that if it continues he will have to do an xray on her which scares us to death. ( She has had on miscarriage before this baby) They are even talking about taking the baby early if they can't find out anything.; Not bad enough she just got her test results back and now she has to start insulin. My daughter is concidered high risk. She is 4 ft 9 and weighed only 98 when she got pregnant. The baby is about 2 lbs is what she has been told. She has gained 12 lbs. so far. She is so stressed out over this. When she has this baby I hope she doesnt get pregnant again. I pray daily for a healthy birth , healthy baby and that my baby will be ok during her delivery. Pray for her. Thanks.

I am almost 7 months pregnant and I went into the ER about 2 weeks ago with very severe pain come to find out my right kidney was completely blocked from kidney stones this is not the first time I have them this is actually the second the doctors say it hasnt nothing to do with the baby causing them because he is actually lieing on my left side not my right so I had surgery to have a stint put in and I will have it in for the remainder of my prenancy I was wondering if anyone has had upper back pain from their kidney stones because I have had upper back pains b4 we found out my right kidney was blocked and I am in the process of passing the stones and having some upper back pains

hcaruso - January 11th, 2006 12:11 AM

I was just wondering if anyone knew if having a stent in could cause inaccurate pregnancy test results. I've had a kidney stone for 6 weeks they have put a stent in me and are doing surgery pretty soon. My problem is I'm 9 days late for my period, have swollen breasts and I'm very tired. I've taken 3 at home pregnancy tests, all negitive. I'm never late!! Has this happend to any of you?

Vanessa - January 11th, 2006 7:26 PM

Surgery is an option if a stone is creating a blockage. I have had surgery many times during my pregnancies. Pregnancy aggravates my stone issues and i pass them one right after another. I go in twice a week for hydration and they keep me on pain meds and meds for nausea. This is my third pregnancy with stones. I hate them!

Breigh - January 15th, 2006 7:12 PM

I just have to post my story and it pretty much sounds like just like everyone elses. I am sooo glad I'm not alone!! I had a stent placed two weeks ago because my right ureter was blocked with a 7-8mm stone and it was causing my kidney to swell. The urologist plans to leave it in until after the pregnancy and I hope that I don't have to have it replaced but after reading a few of your posts it sounds like I might need to have it replaced at least once for the buildup. I just wanted to share my story and ask how long have any of you had your stents in place? Thanks for the advice and info.

Andrea - January 20th, 2006 1:56 PM

I am 30 weeks preganat and at 20 weeks I had a kidney stone that blocked my kidney from draining, I was in the hospital for 3 days to see if it would pass, but no luck. They ended up giving me an epidual and putting a stent which I have to keep in untill after I deliver. I have not have a problem since (Knock on wood). The only thing I would say to avoid would be grapefruit juice I was drinking it like it was going out of style and since then I have not had any grapefruit juice. Also I have tried to drink 2 8oz glasses of water per hour during the day to keep my body flushed. I wish you the best.
