I'm 27 weeks pregnant and last week I had a sent placed. For all you mommies out there that have been thru this procedure please help me with the following: |

I had kidney stones with my first two pregnancy. We lost the first pregnancy at 22 weeks. During my second pregnancy the stones became more of a problem. I had 3 surgeries to remove the stones and finally stents put in. The stents had to be removed because they became encrusted with over a hundred stones. I believe that the stones play a huge part with the preterm labor of our first baby and it was confirmed with the second pregnancy. Only by the grace of God and some wonderful doctors was our son born at 36 weeks. |

hAVE NO FEAR, i HAVE HAD EIGHT KIDNEY STONES. THE LAST ONE WHEN I WAS SEVEN MONTHS PREGNANT. i TOO HAVE ALWAYS NEEDE STRONG PAIN MEDS. tHE DOCTORS GAVE ME MEDS THAT MADE MY PAIN TOLERABLE AND ROPUND UP DURING AN EMERGENCY SURGERY THAT PUSHED THE STONE UP INOT MY KIDNEY AND PLACED A STINT IN THERE TO KEEP IT IN MY KIDNEY UNTIL I GAVE BIRTH. aS WITH ALL THINGS MEDICAL THERE IS ALWAYS SOME RISK, BUT I AM HAPPY TO REPORT THAT WE HAD A GORGEOUS 6LB. 12 OZ LITTLE GIRL WITH NO COMPLICATIONS. tHREE WEEKS LATER THEY DID A LITHOTRIPSY PROCEDURE AND REMOVED THE STINT. i WON'T SAY IT WAS ALL A CAKE WALK, BUT WE ARE ALL FINE AND THRIVING, AND i EVEN HAD ANOTHER BABE (SANS STONE THIS TIME). |

My stones began at 18 weeks with my second pregnancy. My doctors gave me morphine for pain and percocet. They told me this would not harm the baby in anyway. My son is now 5 years old and I am 9 weeks pregnant. I passed two stone last week already. Luckily I was just uncomfortable but it has really made me watch what I eat and continue to drink. |

I had stones during my 6th month of preganncy with my first child. The pain was unbearable. I thought I was in labor. They were able to give me Demerol and IV fluids and antibiotics. I was in the hospital for 1 week, with no harm to the baby. After the inital shot of Demerol, I was given Percaset which I was told was safe to take. They did give me Percaset after a C Section and I was Nursing then as well. Good Luck. It wasnt fun but I would not let it stop me from having a baby either!!!! |

Hi N...I have passed 5 kidney stones. I passed 3 stones while i was pregnant ( one each trimester.) My last stone was excrutiating and was about 5 wks before the birth of my daughter. Anyway, I ended up taking Demerol after alot of pain and alot of worry for my baby. This was done on the maternity floor of the hospital with the direction of my obstetrician. My daughter was fine. I think they thought the longer i was struggling with the stone the more stress i was putting on the baby. soon after i took the medication i was able to relax more and i soon passed the stone/ i have two questions for you....do you know what the stones are made of? If they are made of calcium you may want to have your parathyroid levels checked. I had hyperparathyroidism which was causing my stones. ( I had to have my parathyroid out) well, best of luck to you... |

I have two children. My daughter is almost 9 months old. When I was six months pregnant with her I had a constant severe pain in my right side. When I told my ob/gyn he told me it was probably nothing and if it continued to call him back. After 3 days of dealing with this pain, I couldn't take it anymore. I went to his office and when they did the normal urine scan, it was pure blood. I had 6 kidney stones in my right kidney. I was immediately hospitalized. I had a stint put in to try to reduce the pain so they could pass. This was on a Friday. By Wednesday I couldn't stand it, the stint only made it worse. That Friday I was sent to Memphis,TN (I am from a small town in Arkansas.). The doctors in Memphis were THRILLED to have me. They had never seen anything like it. I had two stones that were larger than a quarter. The other four ranged from four mm to 7 mm. The only thing they could do was put a nephrostimy(I think i spelled it wrong) tube in my back, through my ribs in to my right kidney. I would like to add that I was awake with no medication the entire time. It was literaly someone stabbing me in the back. I had the tube running out of my back that had a bag on the end to bypass my urine. I had no fluid going through my right kidney for 5 months. I had this tube in my back for the remander of my pregnancy and 6 weeks after. It was pure hell. Sorry but it's true. After the my daughter was born and i could have surgery they did a lipthotripsy and broke up all the stones, placed another stint in to all the smaller pieces to pass. 4 weeks after that I had another surgery to remove the larger pieces. But in the end I am 100 percent okay. I had a wonderful urologist in memphis and I have a beautiful baby girl. If you would like to discuss this more or have any other question that i might be able to help you with please contact me at shannonramsey1218@yahoo.com. Good Luck and don't worry about the attacks concentrate on your kids and be happy the Lord will take care of the rest. I hope I helped......Shannon |

Let me tell you I have had three kids and I am on my fourth. with all my pregnancies i have had kidney stones and infections. I have seen Hundreds of dr's and specialist. Between watching my diet, taking antibiotics, getting stents placed and just plain giving into the pain I have not found one thing to prevent an infection or a stone. Now in my fourth pregnancy i have passed over a 100 stones and had three stents placed in my uritter. With all three stents calcifing so fast I now have a nyphrostimy . Which is a tube inserted into my kidney from my back and it drains my kidney in to a bag. I get this changed weekly. Yet the Dr's are still unable to get the stones to stop. I no linger drink coffee. I watch how much calcium i take in and I also drink an extra 48oz if water a day. Still no relief. I know this sounds really bad, but the truth about stones is during pregnancy there is nothing you can really do to prevent them comming on. You might want to talk to a kidney specialist. See if you produce extra calcium outside of being pregnant. Also if you have had a lot of stones and the Drs think its due to your callcium levels. Get your bones check. Some times your body will pull the calcium from there. |

My question is, has anyone had kidney stones with horrible back pain? I have been peeing blood for 5 days now (my urine samples are literally red). My urine has been tested and cultured for infections twice, all negative. My 2nd trip to the hospital this week I was told it could be kidney stones but if that were the case I would be having horrible back pain, which I am not. But urination is very painful, plus it feels like my body is trying to push something out when I'm peeing - if that makes any sense. I've been taking antibiotics and they are doing nothing. I am 38 weeks and after putting into a phone call to my doctor this morning to inform him that my condition is not improving, he has agreed to induce me in a few days and said I would need to see a urologist if the bleeding continues after birth. I have been to the hospital twice and my doctor's office once in the past 5 days, plus talked to my doctor on the phone, and not once has anyone mentioned that I should be checked for kidney stones. |

I really like this forum and thought I would share my story. At 30 weeks I went to my OB for blood in my urine. They diagnosed me with a UTI (I had no symptoms at all!) and gave me antibiotic macrobid. 5 days later I went to ER for cramping. Baby was fine but they said I still had blood in my urine and still had a UTI (again, still no symptoms). The prescribed me antibiotic Bactrim and sent me home. Had an appointment with OB and complained of severe back pain and chills. He said it was unrelated to the UTI and coincidental. A few days later (Friday) I went to ER with stabbing pain on my right side. I too thought i was going into labor it hurt so bad and I was vomitting. I sat in ER for 4 hours got shots of morphine pain and Tributalene for contractions and then they admitted me to Labor and Delivery. I spent the night trying to get through the pain on morphine shots every 4 hours. The next day they put me on a PCA pump which gave me a continuous morphine drip and I could punch a button for a quick shot if I had an attack. This really helped manage the pain. After seeing the On-call Urologist, giving blood, doing ultrasounds etc.. they determined that I have a kidney stone. They couldn't see it in the Ultrasound, but my left ureter was dialated and all my symptoms pointed to a stone. We discussed various options (limited IVP, tube from kidney to bladder, tube from kidney to urine bag out the back). The urologist and my OB encouraged me to take the conservative route and try to pass the stone naturally to avoid any implications to the baby. The next day (Sunday) they took me off the morphine drip and I tried oral pain meds (Lortab). This seemed to work so I was eventually discharged, required to strain my urine to pass the stone naturally at home, and given more macrobid and Lortab for the pain. I was also prescribed Flomax to help the ureter relax (this is acutally used in men for prostate issues). 3 days later I wound up in the ER again because it seemed like the Lortab stopped working and I could no longer manage the pain. I went on the morphine drip again and spent 1 night in the hospital. I met with a neonatologist because I was very concerned about all the pain meds and how it would affect the baby. He assured me that if I was on them for a few weeks there would probably be no affects to the baby. We discussed if I had to be on them long term (months) how the baby could potentially get addicted and show signs of withdrawl at birth. We discussed how this would be treated. He really eased my worries about the pain meds and reassured me that I should be taking them. I again went home to pass my stubborn stone this time with a new prescription for Percoset pain meds. I am now 32 weeks and still have not passed a stone. I go through attacks of pain multiple times per day even though I am on pain meds round the clock. I am starting to learn how to cope better, but this is really hard on my husband and my emotional state. I have done quite a bit of crying and feel myself getting depressed at times. During my "good" periods I try to shower, get dressed and act somewhat normal- today I went and got a pedicure but came home and had an attack right away. At least I got out of the house. I am playing the waiting game right now but I don't know how much more of this I can take. I am going to meet with a urologist tomorrow and try to establish a relationship instead of relying on the on-call urologists at the hospital. I am hoping we discuss what I will do for the next 8 weeks of my pregnancy if this stone doesn't pass. All of the info on the Stents is very helpful! Take care everyone and I feel your pain! |

I'm back again. I have a couple of questions and thought I would share a few things I have learned over the past few days to help ease the pain. |

I had severe pack pain at 18 weeks that I wrote off as gas and muscle pain. Then had a monthly OB appt and my urine was full of blood so off to the ER. They put me on Pain meds and did an ultrasound and couldn't see any stones, but no urine was passing through my right kidney. I was admitted and a stent placed. I never passed any stones. And then told it was going to have to stay in for 4 months, the maximum, before too much buildup. That would put me at about 36 weeks( 35+1d) and upon the stents removal we wait and see...either nothing happens and the stone passed, or we manage the pain with meds, or we replace the stent for the duration of the pregnancy. Well, yesterday was my big day to get this darn stent removed and I felt like a new woman, but oh so breifly, Left the urologists office ~10 am and by 2 pm, the back pain was already starting to come back. By 4:30 I was in tears. So I started up on the vicadin again and called my OB and the urologist and told them that we didn't get the best case scenario we were hoping for. The choices I was given are tough ones. 1. Replace the stent. 2. be on pain killers for a couple weeks and deal. or 3 do an amnio to see how the babys lungs are doing and then possibly deliver early. None of these sound like good options to me. Either way I think I will be having this baby early which for some reason is super scary to me. (My first went 421/2 weeks) Obviuosly, the least invasive option is just to deal and take the pain meds, but I have concerns about the baby being high for weeks on pain killers. Anyone have any thoughts for me? |

I feel as though I am going to die from the pain w/ my kidney stones. I had my first attack four weeks ago on a Saturday afternoon. I was 21 weeks pregnant. The ER sent me home with a UTI and told me to drink plenty of fluids and take antibiotics. Needless to say that just added to my pain. Two days later I called my OB in tears and he sent me for an ultrasound. That afternoon he gave me percacet and told me once again to drink plenty of fluids b/c I had a kidney stone. Well by Wednesday I reached my breaking point. I went straight to his office again. From there he looked at the ultrasound on my kidney stone and all of a sudden realized that it was 13 mm. My left kidney was completely blocked. I had drank at least 4 gallons of water in the five days leading up to this b/c they told me to drink as much fluid as possible. I hope I have not done perm. damage to my kidney. They hospitalized me and he called in an urologist who placed a stint inside of me. This stint will have to be replaced every four weeks. It has been three weeks since my surgery to place the stint and something is wrong. It hurts so much. My left kidney all the way around to my ureter is throbbing in pain. I've taken the pain meds, but nothing is helping. I've tried calling my doctors, but have not been able to reach anyone. I don't want to go back to the ER because they look at me as though they have no idea of what to do with me. I am now 25 1/2 weeks pregnant. I'm scared the pain is going to send me into preterm labor. At this point I really don't know if I would even be able to tell the difference between contractions and the throbbing pain I'm already experiencing. I want my baby to be okay. I just don't know how to deal with this pain. It feels as though I have sharp knives stabbing me repeatedly in the back. Any advice will be appreciated. Are there foods I should or should not be eating? If I have a c-section can they remove the stones at the same time? Can more stones form while this one is in there? The only relief I have is when I fill the tub with 3-4 inches of water and submerge my kidney area or if I place a heating pad on the kidney. Will this harm my baby? |
