Hi Gracefaith. I completely understand where you are coming from. I am only 17 weeks pregnant and I have stones in both of my kidneys. They do not know if they will stay or they will pass, but nothing can be done for them at this time. Like you, they gave be Vicodin, but I hate taking it. I guess I will just have to deal with the pain until the baby comes. I would not recommend a stent. I had one in following another surgery to remove a stone and it was extremely painful. Good luck to you!

For all those who have read my previous posts here's an update. My son was born (BY PLANNED CSection), 5 days before his due date on July 17th. After having kidney stone attacks, having a stent put in and just being SO big from being pregnant, of course I would go almost full term and then have a C-Section. Now, my son is almost 8 weeks old and I still have the stent in and the kidney stone. Because I had a CSection, they had to wait to let that heal before they did anything. I went to the Urologist today and he looked at my xrays and said that the stone that I had is now about 10 mm (it grew from 6mm) and it is stuck in the stent. There also is ANOTHER stone in the right kidney, which is 7 mm. Figures! So, now I have to go in for a CAT Scan and then they'll figure out what to do. It looks like they'll have to blast the new stone and possibly put in another temporary stent. The old stone will be blasted but the large pieces will be able to be picked out without any pain.

To all of you who are suffering from this, I sympathize. Don't worry about the drugs that they give you. I took one at night before going to bed until I delivered. My baby had NO side effects at all. I was also taking Macrobid and Pyridium, periodically. As for the stent, that is a pain, especially when going to the bathroom. The pain subsides though. And to be honest, that beats being rushed to the emergency room for the pain that the kidney stones caused. Hope this helps ease you a little bit.

Hi! I am glad we found this thread. It has answered alot of our questions about kidney stones while pregnant. My wife has a kidney stone and she is 28 wks. pregnant. We went to the ER around 24 weeks along and the doctor's sonogram confirmed that she had a good sized kidney stone stuck in her ureter. The doctor has put a stent in to relieve the pain, but it seems that there is still alot of suffering involved even with that. We are so glad to know that there are other people out there with the same problem. And it has helped us a lot to know that even after all this stress your babies have turned out alright. The doctor says he will have to replace the stent at about 32 wks. to keep it from calcifying and not being able to remove it after the baby is born.

I'm 19 weeks pregnant and tonight I got horrible pain all of a sudden. It felt like a horrible sideache that went from the middle of my stomach, around the left side of my body, to the middle of my back. This is my first pregnancy so I flipped out. Called my doctor's emergency phone number and he simply told me to take tylenol....it's helping the pain a little bit, but I know my body well enough to know that it's not a simple sideache. I also vomited during the horrible point of pain. Are these symptoms similar to anyone here? Is it a probability that I have kidney stones?

Hi, I am new to the site. I have joined b/c my hubby & I want to try to have a baby in a year or so. In Jan/07 I got my very 1st kidney stone & passed parts of that major blockage all yr. It was to the point that my left kidney was not functioning at all. I was told by my doctor that there was nothing I could take or do to prevent more stones & nothing I could do to try to pass the major blockage I had & it would therefore require surgery. I started researching all the naturopathic solutions out there & I started taking Ova Ursi which you can buy at health food stores. It is the leaves of the Bearberry plant & it is a natural diuretic. Within the 1st week of taking this I was no longer waking up in severe pain & having trouble urinating. I also wasn't experiencing my urine gurgling & backing up in me to travel over to my other kidney. Now I have been taking it on and off for a month & am feeling much better. I do not know what a doctor would say about taking Ova Ursi when pregnant, but it would be something you would want to ask about if you try it. Bearberry tea is also often recommended but many people have told me it doesn't work as well as Uva Ursi capsuls.

I am interested to hear what everyone else has to say about kidney stones. I tend to find drinking a lot of water or tea/coco causes me pain. I tend to drink a lot of lemonaide as the cirtrus in it is supposed to be good for breaking down & preventing kidney stones. Anyways trying to get my body recovered from last yrs kidney episodes so that I can get pregnant & stay pregnant.

rileysmommy - January 15th, 2008 1:01 PM

ive had kidney stones for 10 yrs now and im only 23. it seems when you get pregnant you get more stones which is hella painful. ive been reading on here how most of you have had stents put in which frustrates me even more with my doctors they've known i had a stone in my right kidney since i was 12 weeks and they did nothing i ended up in the hospital at 31 weeks for the stone and then finding out i have 2 in my left kidney. with my first children i had stones and had told them they didnt even care to do an ultrasound after i had her i ended up having 3 surguries and my kidney almost falling now you would think since then they would take kidneys problems more seriously. so far they done nothing for me but tell me they'll write it down that im in pain.i dont understand why these doctors dont realizes the pain were all in all the time

Bri, it does sound you may have kidney stones. I had a sharp pain in my rgt side too 5 yrs ago. It feels so unforfortable, that it doesn't matter what position you are in the pain it still there. Recomended to drink 3 lts of water per day. Urine test & blood test, do not always show kidney stones, request an ultrasound or CT scan.

You guys should check out these web sites. branwen.com/rowan/oxalate.htm & missionpharmacal.com/urocitk/sp_diet.htm it tells us what foods contain haigh, medium & low oxalate. Cocoa, Tea... contain HIGH OXALATE very BAD. I too plan to get pregnant this year. I've had 3 stones within 3 years and I think I migh have another one right now. I want to go through a kidney treatment b/4 getting pregnant to reduce my chances of creating a stone. But the doctors don't seem to care about my pain or kidney stone history, all they do is write it down & test me for UTI. On Friday I'm going to the neuprhologist for an ultra sound on my kidneys. Does anyone have questions I might ask.

My daughter in law is 20 wks pregnant and is suffering from kidney stones. Her Dr. wants to do an xray since he found nothing on her ultrasound. She really doesnt want an xray and I dont blame her. We went online for natural remedies and found one that she tried. It was on earthclinic.com she tried it last night and passed a large stone this morning without much pain. Its too early to say if it will help her completely but we are hopeful. She took 2 oz of fresh lemon juice with 1 tsp of virgin olive oil followed by a large glass of water. The recipe on the site said to take 2oz of each but we werent sure if she could keep that much oil down. Anyway looks promising, check out the site.

Hi, exactly one week after giving birth to my first child (by c-section), I had a kidney stone attack. The pain was terrible so I called my OB's office in the middle of the night (thinking the pain was related to my c-section) and they had me go immediately to the ER. After a catscan they found that I had 3 stones. I was put on morphine for the pain and kept in the hospital for 3 days. None of the stones would pass so the Dr removed one surgically and put a stint in for a week. The other two stones were removed 2 week laters by blasting. I have been wondering what would happen if I got a kidney stone during pregnancy all of your answers have been very helpful.

Alekia - February 14th, 2008 5:58 PM

The kidney specialist, said that if I plan to get pregnant. He can put me on a Potassium Citrate Treatment, which is safe for the baby. This treatment will eliminate & help prevent stones from forming. He said pregnancy does equal higher risk on developing kidney stones. Because, studies have shown that calcium helps destroy stones. I don't know what to belive. I'm worried that if I get pregnant I might have to go through the stent surgery like you guys or kidney failure. I don't want to put my kidneys or my child at risk. DID YOU GUYS DEVELOPE STONES BEFORE PREGNACY. IF SO, HOW BAD WHERE YOUR KIDNEYS? The Dr. made it seem that a high risk in developing stones while pregnant depends on how damage your kidneys are. Any input? How much is the stent treatment. I have no insurance.

chickengeorge1 - February 29th, 2008 6:43 PM

We had our baby Jan. 28 & she had her kidney stone broke up w/ laser on Feb. 22. (see earlier post) The baby is doing great & all the pain meds & surgery do not seem to have affected him at all! If you have a kidney stone, try to find a doctor that will use a scope and break it up with laser instead of lithotripsy - there is no comparison! They are able to break up stones that are not accesssible w/ lithotripsy and it is way easier on the body. My wife will have to have a stent in for two weeks after the surgery to let the crushed stone pieces pass, but after that it is back to business as usual. Our current doctor is going to do some tests on the stone fragments and find out what is causing them, so that we can keep them from forming! So after a 4 mo. ordeal we are almost done!

tdegen - April 12th, 2008 7:27 AM

elizebeth- I am on my third stent so I feel like a stent queen. My second stent I had put in i had alot of pain with. I had bladder spasms and it pulled everytime I went to the bathroom. I ended up getting it taken out early. I don't have kidney stones but I have ureteropelvic junction obstruction which i will need surgery for. I am also a nurse in surgery and I don't think having that much pain is normal so I would suggest you get that checked out. It is probably blocked.

Hey tdegen. I'm a paramedic and my wife is going on week 4 of her stent after having hydronephrosis without stones, hematuria or signs of infection. She is 26 weeks pregnant and on Easter Sunday had 2 out of 10 right upper quadrant pain. We went in to have it checked out and prior to any treatment the pain shot up to a 8 out of 10 and had associated nausea and vomiting. We had an ultrasound that showed hydronephrosis. Due to the lack of stones and blood inthe urine the Urologist fell back on it being a "kinked ureter." So for whatever reason he waited 4 days before putting the stent in. We spent a total of 7 days in the hospital but my wife (Jen) is taking Norco for the pain caused by what we assume is the stent and it is seeming to get worse. I am wondering if your UPJ obstruction isn't what Jen has but our Urologist is not very forthright with information. Does this sound like your symptoms? The Urologist has said nothing to the effect of swapping out stents but Jen's current one sounds a lot like your second one you mentioned.
