Kidney Stones During Pregnancy.

I had kidney stones attack at 26 wks, I was told I had 14 stones, they inserted two stents. I've been on Tylenol with codeine and pain meds for to relieve spasm of bladder. This is very painful. They've been tell me for the past 10 weeks that the baby is fine and the meds do not affect the baby, I was suppose to be induced this week (37 wks) but they have now come up with some information that since I had this chronic pain for 2 months that the baby might of not developped has well has a normal pregnancy. Every place I've looked or researched I have not seen no information to back this up. It's a chance I have to take my urologist told me if I want to be induced. Personaly I think they don't want the responsibilaty to fall back on them. I still have the stents in and I am still passing stones after all this time. The stents are painful but not as painful as passing the stone without. I do not have any other children and I keep on telling myself that if I would I didn't know if I would be able to go threw the pregnancy as I have now been bed ridden for the past 3 weeks due to contractions. I would try and make sure that I no longer had stones or get some information on how not to produce some before I got pregnant. |

Did anybody find a web site with information on kidney stones while pregnant? I leave in a remote area with only the help of a few doctors that have never seen this situation. When I go to the hospital now they all run from me as they don't know what to do?? This only information I have found usefull is this kind of web site where it is the women who talk about there experience??? |

What are some of the symptoms of kidney stones. They keep finding blood in my urine. Two nights I woke up to go to the bathroom and I couldn't. My bladder was completely full. I am 13 weeks pregnant, so you know that 2 a.m. bathroom trip. I just couldn't go. It was the strangest thing. I was just tested for a bladder infection and it was negative. I have a sharp pain in my lower abdomen. Can anyone relate to any of this? |

tracie, to answer your question I had no idea that i had kidney stones until i got to the ER. My urine was testing positive for blood since 6 weeks of pregnancy, the night i went into the ER i had severe pain on my left side and back, having never had a kidney stone before i didn't know what the pain was from. thank you to all of you for all the advice, this site has been the most helpful thing. and to Den i have had trouble getting answers also. My OB/GYN has only had one other case of this and it was years and years ago. I think the best advice is the advice you get from the people who have already gone though it. |

I thought that the stent was supposed to take the back pain away but I still have back pain. Not as bad as the attack but I was wondering if anyone else experienced this. I'm not sure if the stent is working properly. |

I am pregnant with my third child. I had stones with my other two children. With my first child, I had a horrible attack in my doctors office when I was 26 weeks. After two days in the hospital on morphine, my urologist put a stent in. He had told me that if they didn't, I would have become septic and lost the baby. Stents are awful - very painful. Delivery was a piece of cake compared to the stent. It hurt to walk, sit, stand, anything! I was induced at 37 weeks. |

Hello , i have been reading all of the posts and the stories, sorry to hear about everyone but reassured that i am not alone. I just got out of the hospital i am 31 wks i have been going to the ob for about 2 months now complaining of urgency to pee and getting to the bathroom and nothing coming out, tests were all neg for UTI, the other moring woke up with terrible pain in my lower back and front right side. I got to the hospital, i was contracting as well. They did sonograms and then wanted x-rays, they did four, i am very distraught about this, i was put on demerol for pain, ampicillin- antibioitc and also magnesium sufide to stop contractions. I had a liportophy done to remove the stone, they used laser to break the stone up. I then needed to have a catheter put in becuase i could not urinate after the surgery. I am home now, still in pain, contracting a little, some blood passing now and then. I feel like i have to pee so bad and only a little comes out and it burns, What have been your reactions to all the meds, did anyone have x-rays, the same medications or know where to get more information, is this residual pain and buring normal? thanks |

the pain that i am experiencing with the stent is all in the bladder and vaginal area. i too have a terrible burning sensation and blood when i urinate. My urologist has been very helpful, in my last visit i asked why he couldn't just break it up and leave it at that, his response was that my stone was too large (1.2CM)and that if he did break it up i would still end up having a stent in. i agree with the posting that said it is criminal to be pregnant with stones, i told my husband he should do one or the other for me, he opted for pregnancy.... |

I sought a second opinion and the doctor was willing to take the stent out. He took it out and the stone came out with it. I am very happy, except he told me that the stent was building up more stones which means I am predisposed to stones during pregnancy and have to drink lots of water. |

when i was 30 weeks i had a kidney stone attack and was in so much pain so i was taking codine only when absolutly needed, i didnt get a stent my doctor told me that it would be just as painful as dealing with the stone so i dealt with the pain for about 8 weeks i felt like i was in hard labor the whole time and visited the hospital many times not knowing if i was in labor or not , then the pain just went away but i didnt pass anything yet. then just this morning i woke and felt like i had to pee just after i had gotton off the toilet and it was like that all morning then about an hour ago i passed a kidney stone the size of a pea it was really painful this didnt happen to me with my first two kids so maybe its a boy thing my first two are girls and i had no problems, but i have had nothing but problems with this pregnacy so thats my experience good luck to you all with yours |

To Jessica, Don't worry, I had stones during pregnancy and went into labor all by my self.In my case the stones were a problem in and of itself that would have probably happened (though maybe not as painfully) whether I was pregnant or not. |

I am at 37 weeks and i have had a stent in since i was 6 months. It has been hell, I havent had to have it replaced, but I have had a UTI for over a month now and have been on antibiotics with no relief. I have been to the ER twice allready with painful contractions that were 2 minutes apart and lasting 1 and 1/2 minutes but I am not dialating. This is very frustrating, I dont know when to go in and when to stick it out? I have continued to have contractions since my first ER visit, 2 weeks ago, they are anywhere from 10 minutes apart to 4 and 2 minutes apart, all day long. They put me on hydrocodone and say that it will not effect the baby, but I am still worried to take it. I have had 6 hours of sleep in the past 3 days. To add to my pain, the doctors in my town, are the only game in town, and the treatment I have been given has been unbelievably bad. I had the sten put in because my kidneys were not emptying because the baby is big and laying on my urethra. I had horrible pain from this for months and they continued telling me well you are pregnant and with pregnancy comes pain, you just have to learn to deal with it, 4 months later im in the hospital having the stent put in. My urologist said my kidneys could have ruptured, and she didnt know how I had made it through the pain that long. If anyone has any hopeful advice please let me know. |

WOW...I am not alone! I am 26 weeks prego just had a stint put in this past Wednesday. About three weeks ago I began to have cramps that got worse throughout the day, this being my second child (first is 12yrs old) I knew it was not labor. I had my monthly appointment that day so I decided to wait to tell the doctor about the cramping. As soon as I got into the dr.'s office they asked for the usual urine sample. I was mortified when I saw the sample was pure red. I tried to keep my composure as I walked back to the room with the sample I did not want to scare all the other moms-to-be. I was given antibiotics and sent home, UTI. It took about 2 hours before the pain became unbearable. I dropped my son off at soccer practice then drove myself to the hospital. When I gave a urine sample in the ER I head the nurse say to another, "you think there is urine in this blood". I was admitted, and given an ultrasound. The ultrasound showed no stones. I was pumped with antibiotics and felt fine. I couldn't get home soon enough. A few days after I got home and the oral antibiotics ran out I started to have pains again. I went in for another check up and told my doctor about the pains. He sent me directly over to the urologist. Urologist said that even though no stones shower up in the ultrasound they are there, stones must be too big to pass. The next day morning I had a stint put in. I have had this thing in for 5 days now. Now that I shared my story, let me get to my point. I read that some of you have had a stint in for months. I don't know how you are doing it??? I am in such pain it is indescribable. Not only does my side ache, the real pain comes from the bladder and vaginal area. Every time I stand up I feel like I have to urinate, it burns nonstop. It takes forever just to find a sitting position that I can stand. It just plain old hurts badly, constantly. I am on Tylenol 3, which not only am I not crazy about taking it does absolutely nothing for the pain. Considering that fact that I can not do a thing due to the discomfort and sheer pain I plan to call my urologist FIRST thing tomorrow morning (Monday) and make an emergency appointment to discuss other options. It is 2005, not 1905 there has to be an alternative to having a stint in for the next three months. As I am sure all of you have, I have a million things that I have to do. I run a business, attend college and have a 12 year old son and a house to manage. I can't just sit in pain. I cry numerous times a day; this could easily put me into depression. I feel hopeless all day. I may just be getting my hopes up, but I am going to have to demand that this stint be taken out. I can't take it. I am to the point that if I could get to this darn stint out myself I would. I hate the fact that we have to deal with this and I refuse to accept it. I will do anything to keep my unborn child from harm, but I need to know all of my options. I will update as soon as I get any answers. Until then if anyone has any suggestions as to how to relieve the pain let me know. Also, I was told to stay away from acidy and spicy foods, tea, coffee for this may irritate the stint. Has anyone heard anything about what to or what not to eat? Also, I am really surprised at the lack of information on pregnancy and kidney stones out there. |
