I had kidneystones 2 years ago(I was not pregnant) now i'm pregnant and I have gallstones. Not sure which one is worse.I guess the gallstones because you can't pass them and they can't do the shockwave either.Difference with the gallstones is that you may not notice anything for days sometimes weeks( as long as you stay on a diet) with the kidneystones is a continuos pain. My husband calls me the ROCK after having both of them. Good luck guys.

De Anna If you dont pass the stones and they are not causing you not to urinate.. you should be able to have a vaginal delvery.. heck the epidural they give will help with the stones.. they would probably then take care of the stone(s) once your baby is born and your still in the hospital. best of luck to you.. p.s. you dont like water try cranberry juice.

De Anna, my doc was very concerned that i was not passing my stone by day 2 in the hospital, i would think that your doctor would share the same concern, his main thing was that it was blocking my ureter (the pain was unbearable) and i had a huge kidney infection from it. since i have had the stent in (to keep my ureter open) i have been on antibiotics to prevent the infection from coming back, i also do urine cultures 2 times a month to make sure they are still working. I would talk to your doctor a bit more i think there is more they should be doing for you

De Anna - June 10th, 2005 11:22 PM

Thanx for replying. Well when i went in to the hospital...they told me it had already traveled to the bladder and thats what caused all the pain so They said its basically stuck in my bladder and she said "it will come out when its ready" which i think is a very stupid answer i want this thing out . Ive tried everything (except Water , which i mentioned i cant tolerate it) but i have been drinking excessive amounts of Liquids and I still see no improvement ... but i have a prenatal app. June.20th .. and if it doesnt come out then Im going to have a serious talk with my doctor and hopefully she can do something with me ... cuz really its bad enough being 8 months pregnant and waking up feeling stiff everyday from only being able to sleep on your side and having a growing uterus pressing on your bladder and having the baby kicking down in that area , doesnt feel any better when you wake up with severe abdominal pain from this stone and a full bladder but only like 3 drops of urine coming out. It does not help. and i dont think any pregnant woman Or ANY woman or man for that matter should have to tolerate this pain ... and I really feel for you Men out there .. having to squeeze one of these bitches out of your tiny penis hole has to hurt like hell i can only imagine. there should b e a treatment or cure whatever you wanna call it for this. they should sell something you can drink that will break the stone up or disolve it or whatever... i mean with all the technology and stuff these days and all the other things they find cures for this has to be an easy one and someone should have come up with something by now .... this is ridiculous!!!!

Shelly - June 11th, 2005 11:38 AM

De Anna, like i mentioned earlier i've had kidneystones before and now that i'm pregnant i have gallstones. Both situations SUCK!!!.My husband nicknamed me THE ROCK lol.But i know there is a shockwave therapy that they can use .It's like ultrasounds that will pulverise the kidneystones if you cant pass them.Im not sure if they can do it while being pregnant but i would sure ask your dr @ your next appointment.Good luck.PS Have they given you painpills??

De Anna - June 11th, 2005 3:44 PM

yea they gave me tylenol 3 ... but i woke up today with a constant pain on my right side but this time it was up near my ribs ... and ive had severe nausea all day yesterday and today... so im wondering if maybe i might have another one Lodged up in the tube thingy that carries it to the bladder ( forgot what its called ) .. but im wondering if maybe thats a sign that its getting worse cuz i cant even stomach anything. this is my first time ever having a stone and im only 20 yrs old and this is my 1st pregnancy .. so i dont know if its pregnancy related or if im just one of them people thats going to have to look forward to having them the rest of my life... I hope not its a scary thing!!!!

De Anna - June 11th, 2005 3:47 PM

Shelly , what exactly are gallstones? are they anything like kidney stones , or related to them in anyway? and how can you get them!? Sorry for all the questions lol ... Im just freakin out.

Nicole - June 11th, 2005 3:55 PM

I feel for you De Anna. I have them too and my doctors told me the same thing...."They come out...eventually."
I am now 34 weeks and this is my first pregnancy as well and it sucks! I refuse to take the pain medication they gave me.....I don't want it affecting my son. I have been dealing with kidney stones for about 3 months now and have attacks quite often now.....I know it sounds crazy but I breathe through the attacks and it eventually subsides. But then and again I have an extremely high pain tolerance. I hope I don't have an attack during labor. As with you only the powerful drugs help my pain. Th3e doctors really need to come up with better answers to our questions.
Good Luck!

De anna,
It's terrible, but I just talked to my doctor recently and there isn't much they can do. If you're vomiting from the pain, it's really important to try to remain hydrated, because dehydration will only make it worse. If you can't keep it down, you may need to check into the hospital for an IV, and my doctor says that morphine is the only thing that'll help with kidney stone pain. You don't want your body to go into shock from the pain either and induce early labour, (or if you're over 8 months, maybe you do!) but either way, it might be worth a hospital visit. By the way, it's the tube thing is the ureter, and no you don't have to drink just water, add some cranberry juice or other juice to add a bit of taste.

babysentials - June 12th, 2005 11:30 AM

I have had kidney stones with all three of my pregnancies. After the second baby they recommended that I not have any more children because it is so risky but my husband neglected to get snipped and now I am 20 weeks pregnant with my third and with my second kidney stone. I am constantly on vicodin and am in terrible pain. The doctors here are idiots anyways, but nothing else can be done for it. It just sucks. I basically have to live with the pain and just feel lucky that labor is nothing now compared to kidney stones!

Nicole - June 12th, 2005 1:23 PM

To all of us ladies with mostly calcuim stones. Drink lots of lemon juice and lemonade concentrate. Also oranges/juice helps. The citrus helps neutralize the extra calcium spilled over in the kidneys. My Nephrologist (kidney specialist) recommended 2-3 lemons/oranges a day. I know that seems impossible, but I squeeze it into water or just drink lemonade. They also make a potassium citrate pill which contains the citrus, but it hasn't been tested during pregnancy and my OB's recommended I wait until after my baby is born. I am 15 wks. My nephrologist wanted me to take the potassuim citrate to prevent kidney stones, because he said it's hard to drink 2-3 lemons/oranges a day- but that is the natural way. Good Luck to all of us!

Thanx guys for replying and all the information you have given , i have to say you guys have helped me more in many ways then my doctor has ... like i said He dont seem to have an answer for anything. well im glad to hear there are things besides water that will help , (thats a relief) lol. and Knowing that Childbirth is nothing compared to kidney stones helps alot cuz i dont know how much more pain i can tolerate. I also dont like to take my pain meds. in fear of it affecting my daughter in anyway i have tooken them twice since ive had them , and i hate taking them but i have a low pain tolerance unfortuantly. but thankyou everyone for all your help it feels better to know im not in this alone and there are people out there that can relate to me it helps me get through it better , and i wish everyone the best of luck.
thankyou!!!

Rachael - June 12th, 2005 5:26 PM

I am sorry to hear about everyone's kidney stones. I just wanted to say that I have had two pregnancies and I had pain in my lower back after my second pregnancy when I woke in the mornings. I did nothing about it for about 2 years. Finally I went to the doctor, because I was having severe pains in my stomach that I just couldn't live with. The doctor gave me anti-depresants and anti-acid pills. That was over a year ago now. The pills did nothing for me and the doctor told me the next step was a stomach biopsy. He did no other tests (blood, urine, or anything else)
I was terrified so I did nothing. Well I went to get a job and they had me do a pre-employment physical. That was 6 months ago now and come to find out I had blood in my urine. The physican told me to go and see my doctor. That same doctor said I had a bladder infection and so he put me on antibiotics.
A month later I was in severe pain and was rushed to the emergency room. Since I had the pain in my stomach on the right side, the doctor did a series of tests: x-rays, CT scans, and blood tests. The doctor read the films and decided I had gallstones and wanted to remove my gallbladder that night.
Since I had just gotten a new job, I decided that I would wait and talk to another surgeon. When I did and he read the films, he was surprised to see that I didn't have gallstones. He said I had kidney stones and told me to see a urologist.
After seeing the urologist, I found out that I needed the laser surgery to remove my severe stones. The next week I had my first surgery and stent put in. I had the second surgery 2 weeks later and the stent removed 2 weeks after that.
This past week I had my follow-up appointment and found out that all of the stones had returned. The next day I was in surgery again and the stent was put back in. I have been in severe pain and I am hopeful these stones don't return after this last surgery.
My doctor said that I got these stones during my last pregnancy. The moral of the story is don't always just trust what a doctor says keep pushing and find someone that will help.
My doctor says if my kidney doesn't start functioning properly that loosing my kidney could be a possibility. I just hope and pray that doesn't happen.

Rachel - June 12th, 2005 10:08 PM

The stress you put your baby under from being in pain is far worse than the effect from taking pain medication...DONT SUFFER!

elizabeth - June 12th, 2005 10:37 PM

De Anna, I have had 2 surguries since i was diagnosed with kidney stones, the first one to place the stent, and then the second one to replace the stent and at that time they did lithotripsy to break up the stone, i feel soooooo much better since having my second surgury, i am actually able to do normal things now. i think it would be worth talking to your doctor about surgury esp with the amount of pain your in. My whole thing started when i was 18 weeks i am now 30 weeks and the doctor says my baby is doing fine despite the endless amounts of pain meds and the surguries, so i really feel the benefits outweigh the risks.
