Low HCG Levels At 4 And 5 Wks Pregnant

Hi Cate, |

Has anyone had a high progesterone level (mine has been 60+)? I am 5 1/2 weeks pregnant with very dissappointing hcg levels - 14 dpo it was 30; 16 dpo it was 53 and now 21 dpo it is 153? Does the high progesterone level help in anyway? My doctor says that I'm probably on my way to a miscarriage. More blood tests and an ultrasound tomorrow. |

I just read through all the posts and my heart, hugs and prayers go out to all of you. I felt like I was living through the waiting and pain with each of you. My situation is different from any of the others out there, so I'm still really puzzled. My HCG numbers are low, and not rising very significantly: 1746 (Monday), 2253 (Wednesday), and 2380 (Friday). Tomorrow, I will be 8 weeks. My doctor is not very hopeful or encouraging that this pregnancy will make it. But the u/s (at 7.5 weeks) showed a nice yolk sak and a small bump that looked like the beginning stages of an embryo, but no heartbeat yet. The puzzling thing that seems different from everything I've read on here is that I feel great! Absolutely no spotting and no cramping, just occasional stretching/ligament pulling type of thing. If I were going to lose this baby, wouldn't I be feeling poorly by now? Has anyone ever heard of a successful pregnancy in which the HCG levels were rising, but not doubling? I'm grateful for ANY comments while we're playing the waiting game. Prayers to all you mommies!... |

I've been reading all your entries and I'm comforted in knowing I'm not alone. I had a m/c on 3/08/05 at 4weeks. It was my first pregnancy and it's hurt me so much. It's been over 2 months now and I haven't started my period since! Is this okay? How long did it take you guys to get your next period after m/c? |

Well I miscarried this afternoon at 3pm. Just wonderful. No one told me it was this painful. This is the worst period pain I've ever had in my life. Seems to me that HCG that tests lower than noraml (outside that vast HCG rage) is a SURE sign a miscarry is on the way. Doc told me he has little faith that I would continue. Even tho my HCG had been doubling correctly. It just started low. Too low.Just 9 at day 30 after LMP. I guess it's a learning expereince. After 5 failed IVF attempts I think you unfortunatly start to become a bit cynical. I'm starting to think that the Gods are just not on my side with this and that I should perhaps be starting to take the hint. (before I end up in the nut house) |

I feel equally as desperate. Have two healthy children (easy, normal pregnancies) and am trying for a third. Miraculously this month (at 41) we got pregnant. At 5 weeks tests came back great - progesterone 26.2 and hcg at 3553. Now at 7 weeks my prog. levels are dropping, down to 14.9 progesterone and hcg up a bit at 9930. I'm on 200 mg prometrium daily but worry that at least a week went by with no prog. supplements. Is it possible to sustain this. I never did and don't now have many pregnancy symptoms. Breasts actually less full. Worried that this is not viable, though no spotting to speak of. Excruciating waiting the four day til i'm 8 weeks and they'll do an ultrasound. Anyone out there have a similar experience? |

I logged onto this website after recieving a positive pregnancy test (my second IVF cycle), with a very low HCG level or 17. With my last pregnancy my numbers were sky high, so I knew immediately this was low. After reading all of your entries, I knew it wasn't good news. As the numbers slowly went up, the doctors expressed concern that the pregnancy wasn't viable, especially after a 6 week ultrasound, where they saw a sac, but no heart beat. So, we expected the worst, and then a few days later I started bleeding. There was none of the awful cramping that you hear about, so I was a little confused. They brought me in on Monday for an ultrasound to see what was going on . . . not only is the sac growing well, and now has a heart beat, but they see another one! They think the bleeding may be, that I'm losing the second one, but I only had the bleeding that one day. So, I'm not so sure. To all of you going through fertility treatmenst, keep you head & spirits up, and rember that they still don't have this fertility thing perfected. Each case is different, and no matter what the odds are, there's always a chance. Our doctor told us it wasn't completely hopeless, but the odds weren't in our favor, and we should probaby prepare ourselves for the worst. Yes, it's still early and anything can happen still - but hopefully it's a good sign of things to come. With my last pregnancy, I started out hyperstimulated, gained 10 pounds of fluid in three days, bleed for my first trimester, and was on bed rest for the first five months, so I've got some crappy experience if anyone needs advice. But in the end, I have a happy, healthy son at home to show for it. You're all in my heart and prayers! |

as long as your hcg is rising that is a good sign. At 6 weeks have the doctor do an aultrasound. In my case when i was 4 weeks pregnant my hcg was 7.5, 48 hours later it was 10.0 and 48 hours after that it is now 18.5. i am worried like you if this is normal, but my level seems to be so much lower than other women in this forum with hcg questions. (i know there is a hcg chart of what range you are supposed to be in.)my doctor prescribed progesterone suppositories and hephrin shots since i have antiphospholipid antibodies and miscarrages in the pass. So i am worried too, i have spotting since my 4th week pregnant, it comes and goes. In most cases the hcg doesn't always double and most women still go on to have healthy babies. As long as your hcg is increasing there is hope. Good luck |

Nicola---sorry i haven't answered sooner. i hope you and your baby are alright. my lmp was jan. 5th, but i think i ovulated jan. twenty-something. after a level 2 ultrasound, the due date was confirmed at oct. 21st rather than the original oct. 11th. so, they thought i was a little further along than i was by about 2 weeks or so. makes a difference. let us know how you are. |

liz and cate: i had very low hcg levels, and the dr.'s thought i had miscarried. however, they were wrong, and i'm now 20 weeks along. they can only say it's a miracle---can't explain it. we almost had a d&c but did one last ultrasound, and there he was! so, i don't wanna give false hopes, but i do want to give peace of mind. secondly, addressing cate specifically, i am one who has been on hormone replacement therapy (progesterone) for years now and continue to take my hormones through the first trimester. i also have hypothyroidism, so i have to keep up my med.'s on that to susatain my pregnancy as well. therefore, we do lots of monitoring and blood testing, esp. as the baby taxes my body more as the pregnancy goes on. my first pregnancy went well, even with my taking an anti-seizure med. so far, this one is going just great, too. all that to say that there are some things worth checking out/doing/treating/etc. that may help. this includes ELISA/ACT allergy and heavy metals testing, etc. |

I AM IN THE SAME BOAT. I HAVE HAD SOME BLEEDING AND I AM SUPPOSED TO BE AROUND 4-5 WEEKS. I HAVE ALREADY HAD 1 MISCARRIAGE 3 MONTHS AGO AND TOMORROW I WILL KNOW THE RESULTS OF THIS TEST. I AM PRAYING SO HARD THAT THIS IS NOT ANOTHER MISCARRIAGE. WHEN SHE TESTED ME ABOUT A WEEK AGO MY LEVELS WERE RATHER LOW. SO SHE PUT ME ON SOME PROGESTRONE TO SEE IF THAT WOULD HELP WITH THE PLACENTA AND STOP THE BLEEDING. I GET MY RESULTS TOMMORROW KEEP ME IN YOUR PRAYES AND YOU WILL STAY IN MINE:) |
