sorry if this is a dumb question, but i was wondering if there are ways you can tell that its ectopic?

Hi Guys. Hope all is well, I was off line there for a while. I was hoping for some good news but no luck for me this month I'm afraid.

paulina16 - October 11th, 2007 4:49 PM

Hi, sorry it took so long for me to write back but remember I have 3 kids. I went to my appt on Tues and all is well and back to normal according to my doctor I should expect a period in 2 wks and I should wait at least a cycle before trying to conceive so all in all i'm happy that everything is okay now. Yes an IUD is a form of birth control without any hormones it works well I've used it for 3 years and had no problems until now but I definitely do not want it in me after this. According to the doctor my ectopic was most llikely caused by this device since one of it's functions is to not allow the egg if it does become fertilized to implant in the uterus. Also at first they didn't know if it was in the uterus or in the tube either and I was terrified but after having blood work done every other day she decided to inject me the methotrexate but according to her I received a really low dose because my levels were only at 63 and then dropped to 52 on their own which apparently wasn't enough so the metho did it's fuction within a week my levels dropped to 0. Well I hope this info helps you guys. Please excuse any typos I'm typing with my 20 month old on my lap. Bye Bye

quick update my hcg is now 9 from 3300..as of last thrusday. I have been bleeding since Aug 27. however I think I just got a period at the tale end of all the bleeding because it was bright red. I am starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel as the bleeding is finallly lighteningup after 7 weeks. I will wait for my next period and possibly get some tests done to rule out that there is not a blockage and proceed with ttc again..I just pray I am able to get pregnat after an ectopic and methodextrate. How is everyone else doing?

Hi Everyone! Wow, I'm so excited that I finally found you. It has been a long and painful road for me. Was shocked to find out I was pregnant back in July 07 as I took the plan B pill after an "oops" during ovulation. But here I was pregnant (didn't know conception was a real possibility with that pill-be very careful if you decide to take it-the packaging was very obscure about this situation). It wasn't planned but I was very excited. About a week after finding out I was pregnant went to the hospital for pain and spotting. Dr said HCG was pretty low for 5 weeks couldn't find the sac in uterus (hospital U/S). Went to OBGYN next day and he was optimistic as HCG had gone up quite a bit from previous day. The following week went for U/S. Found it was ectopic. That was Aug 1st. Had the M shot on that day. My hormones shot up to over 1,000 when I went back a week later. The first 4 weeks of getting my hormones checked they only went down about 100 or less each week (btw was in pain and bleeding heavily during the whole process). I asked for another shot. Dr said not necessary. By Sept 1st they were 450 then all of a sudden they started coming down by the 100's. Sept 22nd had heavy bleeding that lasted for 4 days. I thought it would be over but was wrong as I went for HCG check on the 27th and it was still 78. Dr said to come back in 2 or 3 weeks. I ended up going back today Oct 23rd. My concern is that I had intercourse on Oct 6th (2 weeks after that heavy flow). Took Home Pregnancy Test it was a very light positive. Am I pregnant or is that HCG still in my system?? I will know tomorrow after blood test comes back. If the home pregnancy test positive is from the previous ectopic it means that I am still going through this after almost 3 months. What a nightmare!!!! I hope I'm pregnant. Didn't know how ready I was for a baby until it happened!! I wish all of you the best of luck and thanks AGAIN!!! I LOVE THAT I FOUND YOU!!! I'M NOT ALONE ANYMORE!! : )

Hi Ladies!
You know, when other people are going through a loss such as a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy, it's so easy for me to tell them that it will all be okay and that everything happens for a reason. Well - it's a hard pill for me to swallow myself after just having gone through an ovarian ectopic pregnancy a few weeks ago. I also was treated with one dose of the methotrexate. My counts are going down but just this past week, I have been unable to get in contact with my dr to get the last results of my hcg bloodwork. My dr told me to keep taking my prenantal vitamins throughout the whole shot and aftermath ordeal. I have read many posts and for the most part, everyone else's dr told them not to take them. I am so ready to get pregnant again and hope that you all have much success too. I must confess, I am so scared that I will not get pregnant right away. My dtr. is 15 yrs. old and since then, this is the first time that I have gotten pregnant, even though me and my husband never used protection. I hope that I get pregnant right away, because I am not getting any younger. After my shot, I only had bad pain on the 2nd and 3rd day, after that I had bleeding for about a week. My husband and I have started having "relations" again, but know that we still need to wait before we try to get pregnant. I am so ready for that to happen!
I will stay tuned to this post and I am sending baby dust to you all!

Kristin72 - December 20th, 2007 4:16 PM

how is everyone doing? anyone ttc after having had the ectopic? Any bfp's? I have a sonohysterogram set up for january 14th and then I will ttc. I am ovulating because I took an
OPK and the fell positive last cycle. I am suppose to O on Dec 25th...so tempted to ttc leading up to that date but I think it's best if I get al all clear from the sono. Anyone else?

babygirl74 - December 20th, 2007 8:51 PM

Hi Kristin 72!
My husband and I are ttc since the ectopic. I actually went to my first dr visit the other day, since I had the methotrexate shot and the follow-up blood work. He told me that he won't do any tests to see if my tubes are blocked. He says that we would pretty much have to see if it happens again when I get pregnant again. That sucks though because that's the last thing that I want to have to go through again. He told me not to make getting pregnant again a JOB, but to enjoy it. That's easier said than done. For some reason though, my cycle shortened since the ectopic. I went from a 28 day cycle to a 23 day cycle. I really through me off last month. But I think I will be ready to go for it this month. AF just left last week, so I am ready for ovulation.
Baby Dust to you all!!! Please keep me posted on your success!!

Kristin72 - December 29th, 2007 4:41 PM

Hi Babygirls74, That's too bad your doc won't do the sonohysterogram. It doesn't hurt to have it done...I have heard many women get preggers right after because there tubes seem to get flushed out. It doesn't guarantee the egg won't get stuck again but I feel better ttc again knowing I do not have blocked tubes. It is not a wait and see next time you get pregnant for me..I would have to know my tubes are clear. I am 40 so I can't bare to have additional ectopics if I can help it. The chances are better if we had the methodextrate as our tubes are still intact..we could have just fluked out by having a slow egg or whatever. But, try asking to get this test if at all possible and if not all the best to you ttc #2..Babydust to you too!!!!!!!!

eibergen07 - December 29th, 2007 5:40 PM

I got a methotrexate shot when i was 19 but never went in for a DNC because i moved I hope thats not a bad thing. In aug and sept. i missed my monthly and then got it in Oct and now i'm 2 months late again i'm sick to my tummy alot and have bad headaches but no other signs what do I do

Kristin72 - January 1st, 2008 2:26 PM

have you had a pregnancy test? that should aleviate your worries. also you don't need a d&c unless your doc recommends it. was it an ectopic you had? where was the ectopic located? best of luck to you.

babygirl74 - January 1st, 2008 7:00 PM

I agree with you Kristin72, she should take a preg test. That may help to put your mind at ease. If you were supposed to have a dnc, I definitely would not put it off for long.
Best of luck to you! I just know that Babies are in our future for 2008!

Allison1234 - January 14th, 2008 2:36 PM

I had an ectopic at the beginning of December. My hcg levels are steadily going down after receiving two shots of methotrexate. Last I heard they were at 400. It seems like it has been such a long ordeal but I think it was a better choice than having the surgery and getting the tube removed! I continue to bleed even 20 days after the last shot and I have some pretty bad cramping that comes and goes. Also, it is painful to go to the bathroom at times! I'm tired all the time which is probably from the loss of so much blood.

My doctor has told me to wait at least 3 months before ttc. I badly want to try sooner. However, I have done some research of my own on this issue. I have found an article in the Oxford Journal of Medicine. It advises to wait 6 months before ttc as the methotrexate has been shown to remain in the system for that long. The article is filled with medical terminology so it is a little difficult to read but here is a quote from the summary which is a bit more straightforward:

"Women should be warned that there may be a small increased risk of spontaneous abortion early in pregnancy, and advised against taking MTX if they are considering conception. Those who choose to stop MTX and proceed to pregnancy should be advised against conception within 6 months of taking MTX. In the event of conception within this time, full counselling and close fetal monitoring should be offered. "

Also:

"MTX treatment is unlikely to have a major effect on short- or long-term fertility in men and women, but a washout period of 6 months cessation of treatment prior to conception is advisable to prevent the small chance of chromosomal abnormalities in offspring"

Unfortunately, this site will not let me post a URL but the article is entitled "The effects of methotrexate on pregnancy, fertility and lactation." It is from 1999, Volume 92, Number 10, page 551-563.

From what I understand, methotrexate eliminates the folic acid in your body so if you were to conceive soon after the shot it would probably be similar to not having taken prenatal vitamins with folic acid. I think that 6 months is a little extreme but we will try to wait that long in order to give our baby the best chance. For those of you that didn't, I'm sure your pregnancy will be successsful as so many people do not take the vitamins while pregnant and end up with perfect babies. God provides miracles in abundance!

galiondi - February 4th, 2008 5:31 PM

I took the M shot last week, on Jan 30th. It was supposed to be the best day of my life since the reason me and my husband went to the doctors office, was to have our initial OB check..
I was supposed to be almost 10 weeks along.. There was no heart beat, the baby measured 6 weeks..and the thing i have never heard before in my life, was that this is a cornual pregnancy! Kind of etopic, still not really in the tube, but on the corner with the tube and the uterus. Dr said, i was so lucky that the baby stopped growing, otherwise i would have ruptured.. I feel like i am so empty.. the pain is not letting me sleep, my emotions are not any less painful. Yesterday i started bleeding, 4 days after taking the shot, i dont know how long is this going to take, when will the pain go away.. I had another miscarriage last year, they never found the baby, i just bled for entire month and than once the HCG got down to 0 i got my period and that was it. This time i had to take the shot, the baby had stopped developing 3 weeks ago and in order to avoid surgery, i took the shot! first blood test HCG was 10.000, than the second was 7.000 and the test from yesterday..well, i dont know about that one, i can not get in touch with the Dr, neither have the hospital attempted to call me. I feel as if im all alone.. Has anyone experienced "the cornual" pregnancy? Or anything like my case?

babygirl74 - February 4th, 2008 7:01 PM

Hi galiondi,

I am so sorry for your loss. I have never heard of a cornual ectopic pregnancy either. As I posted earlier, I had an ectopic pregnancy, but the dr. says the baby was growing in my ovary. My guess is that there's a problem with my tubes (blockage or something).

I also felt empty inside after my loss, and that is to be expected. It's sad to say, but I felt like no one in the world could have felt like I did when the dr. said that I had to have that shot to make the baby stop growing. Even to this day, I still feel pain. I guess that's why I am so eager to get pregnant. But, I have not had any luck.

I actually started bleeding before the shot, because of the ectopic. That's what alerted the dr. to do blood tests and a vaginal/pelvic ultrasound. I remember after that, I asked the nurse if I could go out the back door because I was a mess, once I found out and I didn't want all those happy Moms-to-be that were sitting in the waiting room to see me crying uncontrollably.

Hopefully you won't bleed for long and the pain will subside soon. You will always hold a special place in your heart and soul for your unborn baby. You are not alone. Anytime you want to talk, just send a message. This is a good form of therapy...at least it is for me.

God Bless and Baby Dust!
